What To Say to Someone Who's Depressed

10 things to say—and 10 things you should never say—to someone battling depression

What do you say to someone who's depressed? All too often, it's the wrong thing.

"People still have such a cloudy idea of what mental illness is," Kathleen Brannon, of Herndon, Virginia, told Health.

"Sometimes people will say, 'Oh, you're depressed? Yeah, I've been depressed,' and you realize just the way they say it that, nooo, it's not quite the same thing. It's not just that I'm feeling sad or blue," Brannon said.

To be diagnosed with depression, a person will experience symptoms of the mood disorder nearly every day for two weeks, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Some signs include sadness, anxiousness, hopelessness, guilt, or "empty" mood. People with depression may be irritable, lose interest in pleasurable hobbies or activities, and experience physical changes such as pain and weight loss or gain. In severe cases, a person may have thoughts of death or suicide.
