177. Crepes de Paris

View Comments
Ooh la la, a romantic "French" date without the plane ticket!
I've had crepes before and it's not typically a cheap date idea. However, DealPerkOC.com is currently offering a $20 value voucher for 1/2 price at a mere $10. Buy your voucher online now and use anytime until 10/26/10 at Crepes de Paris, so that's plenty of time to plan your date (5+ months to be exact). Although up to 5 may be purchased, only one voucher may be used per visit. There are 4 locations between LA and OC, but this offer is only good for the creperie in Irvine. I just bought mine, so I'll have to post a follow up once I've enjoyed this scrumptious French food!

In case you don't know, there are 2 types: savory and dessert. The more well-known one is the dessert crepe, which is usually covered in a sweet sauce like chocolate or nutella and whip cream. Savory simply means non-sweet, so those are the ones you can have as a meal. For example, there are breakfast crepes with eggs and bacon, or if you fancy meat, get the chicken with the mushrooms and spinach in a nice wine sauce. The menu is not limited to crepes though. The price of crepes ranges at $5-12, while the rest of the menu at $5-8: sandwiches, soup, salad and omelettes. According to reviews, the coffees are worth ordering ordering just to see the art on the frothy foam. Bon appetit!

174. Free Dinner with Dave

View Comments
Good friends, Good (free) food, Great (free) music.
Dinner with Dave is a 100% free event with a complimentary light dinner at Memphis at the Santora in the Santa Ana Art District AND live music. I heard the food is good here and if it's anything like it's sister bar/restaurant, the nightlife atmosphere at the Manhattan Beach location is pretty cool (there's another one in Costa Mesa). Tomorrow on May 12th, the event kicks off with a DJ at 9 PM, then the live band and dinner start at 10 PM. It is a bit of a late start, but it's F-R-E-E. With that said, arrive early and enjoy a drink at their bar (optional). This is a great group date idea for 21+ (sorry, the restaurant is normally family-friendly, but not for this late-night activity).

The single-course dinner is served buffet style and according to many Yelp reviewers, Memphis at the Santora is yum! One Yelper claims that the freshly made chocolate berry bread pudding is worth the wait (and money). Parking is free here, either on the street or at a parking lot a block away. Free food, no cover AND free parking!

I won't be able to make it tomorrow night, but I'm marking my calendar for every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month (yes, it's bi-monthly!!). I'm not sure when @DinnerwithDave events first started but it's first mentioned on Yelp in 2007. Click HERE to read the Yelp reviews mentioning this event. I can't believe I just learned about it now. Looking forward to this one!

172. Free Bowling at Lucky Strike

View Comments
Free bowling is a great group date idea!
Lucky Strike at L.A. Live is offering a free game with free shoes on Wednesday, May 12th. All you have to do is show up and say the magic words, "Bangerang Bowling", in honor of the movie, Hook. The alley will be open at 11:30 AM til 1 AM (must be 21+ after 7 PM). Depending on when you go, games are about $6-7 and shoe rental is $5. If Wednesday doesn't work for you, pay for bowling on Monday 5/10 and get a free entree. If free bowling wasn't enticing enough, maybe free food will?

Originally uploaded by arnthora

If those days don't work for you, pick any day during the week! Their Lunch & Bowl special sounds like a pretty good deal too: Pay $7.95 for lunch and get a free game and shoes between 11:30 AM - 4 PM on Mon-Fri. If you prefer drink specials, then Lucky Hour is 4-7 PM daily (yes, including weekends!): $5 well drinks, $3 draft beer, $4 shots, $5 house wine by the glass and various food specials. Check out the website for other specials on Sundays and Tuesdays for 1/2 price bowling. As for parking, L.A. Live parking lot charges $5 for the first 2 hours.

If downtown LA is too far for you, check out these other bowling date ideas:

168. Tsunami Teppanyaki Dinner

View Comments
One of my favorite style of cooking is teppanyaki, a Japanese cuisine that uses an iron griddle to cook food. The word is derived from teppan (iron plate) and yaki (grilled, broiled or pan-fried). Besides always being delicious, teppanyaki is like a dinner show (see onion volcano picture on right). The only downer is the price of this all-inclusive meal, which does include soup, veggies and rice.

Teppan Yaki Onion Volcano

However, Tsunami Steakhouse and Sushi Bar in Huntington Beach makes it an affordable "cheap date" with the following dinner specials on weeknights:
  • Tightwad Tuesday: $13-18 Teppan specials (Regularly $19-23), $3 Coors Light, 1/2 Off Sushi Rolls.
  • Flatbroke Wednesday: 2-for-1 (BOGO) Dining & Teppan.
  • Anniversary Party on May 20th: $9.95 Teppan specials, $2 Coors Light, $5-7 Special Sushi Rolls. Click HERE for details.
Regular entrees are normally $16-28, so it's a great deal at half-off, $8-16 per person (click for menu online here). As much as I love Benihana Restaurant (see Cheap Date Idea #148), you can't beat this BOGO deal for teppan at Tsunami. Parking is free here, but the lot is small. Thankfully, this restaurant offers free valet parking (a tip is always appreciated). It's first come, first serve (no reservations), so come earlier to check in and then enjoy the sunset (around 7:30 pm) at the beach right across the street from the restaurant. You can either walk along the beach or enjoy an easy hike around the Bolsa Chica Wetlands (AKA an ecological reserve, a hidden gem in north Huntington Beach).

UPDATE 05/18/10: I came here for 1/2 off sushi rolls, which are generous in size, so don't order too many at first like I did. There is plenty of teppan dining space, so reservations are not really required, but it will probably be quite busy for the $9.95 teppan. I'm definitely coming back on Thursday!

Thanks to DealPerk.com, you and your special someone can enjoy this at Avanti Cafe in Costa Mesa. Buy the voucher now and use it anytime through the rest of the year. That's 8 months to plan your pizza date! Ok, it might not quite be a "first date" idea, especially when it regularly costs $34. However, $11 per person is a pretty good deal for 2 medium (12") pizzas, 2 chef's choice desserts and 2 drinks. It can't get any cheaper than that for gourmet-style pizza.

Lunch date = Less pressure.
If you want something more casual than dinner, then lunch is your best bet. But the million-dollar question is where? If you are in the downtown area, Fleming's Steakhouse at L.A. Live is a nice date spot, but not usually a cheap date. With that said, I am delightfully surprised about their new lunch menu featuring 5 new affordable items: braised short rib sandwich, chicken salad sandwich, thai chicken salad, cajun chicken cobb salad and a steakhouse salad. You and your date can enjoy these for a mere $10 per plate on weekdays Mon-Fri 11:30 AM - 2 PM. For variety, get 2 plates and share family-style.

A nice dinner for two AND a bottle of wine for only $25 pp?!
As we all know, a dinner date is not typically a cheap date idea, but the Larchmont Grill has designated Thursday as "Date Night". Select 2 entrees (see special menu online) and a bottle of red or white (selection changed weekly) for $50 plus tip and tax. That's not a bad deal at $25 per person when an entree by itself usually costs $17-29 each (see regular menu online). Or come back on Sundays for a 3-course dinner with a glass of wine for $35 per person. The Larchmont Grill was rated 4 out of 5 stars on both Yelp and OpenTable with several reviewers noting this spot as romantic with ambiance.

148. Benihana Dinner for Two = $37

View Comments
Teppanyaki is yummy & fun for a nice dinner date.
I love teppanyaki, which is the Japanese style of cooking with an open grill at your dining table. I have never been disappointed with a meal at Benihana, except the fact that it's not quite a cheap date. However, Benihana is offering a Hibachi Steak Dinner for Two during the month of April. This includes: onion soup, salad, shrimp appetizer, steamed rice, hibachi vegetables, homemade dipping sauces and Japanese hot tea. The only thing not included is dessert. You get ALL of this for only $37 plus tax and tip. Not the cheapest dinner date, but a darn good deal for a nice dinner.

This is not limited to LA & OC, so I'll start a new dating category (or tag, keyword, label) called national. No coupon is required, but reservations are highly recommended because this restaurant is super popular. If you have never been, you HAVE to go at least once. This is definitely a nice restaurant for a first date or a 365th date night. Just know that your hair and clothes will smell like the food when you walk out (due to the flaming onion volcano and whatever else is coming off the grill flames). Can't wait to go again, yum!

UPDATE 05/04/10: Their Chef's Special for the month of May is Filet-for-Two at $39 plus tax and tip. That breaks down to $25 per person, which is a good deal at Benihana. For an even better deal, check out Cheap Date Idea #168 for the 2-for-1 deal on Wednesdays or $9.95 anniversary special on 5/20.

115. Wine & Dine for Only $10-20

View Comments
Going out for a nice dinner is not usually a cheap date but...
I was strolling through the Fashion Island Shopping Center in Newport Beach on Friday with my best friend when I discovered one of the best "cheap date" dinner date ideas! My friend just informed me that the French 75 turned into Brasserie Pascal here. If it's anything like the French 75 in Burbank, the ambiance here is classy and the food, delicious. New menu options were recently introduced at a price point ($10-20), which is quite reasonable for a French Bistro. The best part is that this special is good anytime, any day of the week, any time of the day!

Cheap Date Idea #115

One of you can get the appetizer with your entree and the other, dessert, then split it, or go for double the dessert. Every entree comes with fixed sides. There are at least 3 choices for each course. My best friend has personally tasted the filet mignon when it was part of the $10 menu and confirms that Brasserie Pascal is a great cheap (yet classy) date spot.

I took a photo of the meal-deal ad (see right), but check out the full menu online (click HERE). Reservations are available online through either their website or on OpenTable.com. Actually, this is good deal for large birthday parties or group dates, because the bill is easier to split with set prices. The restaurant must have picked up on this because the one limitation in fine print is the $15 deal is not good for parties over 6 guests. By the way, parking at Fashion Island is free and plentiful.

Looking for something more casual than dinner? Check out their happy hour 4-7 PM on weeknights (website says 5-7 PM, but I called to confirm that it does start at 4 PM). For a mere $5, you have the choice of several champagne cocktails, some house wine as well as all well drinks. Based on Yelp reviewers, the "Pascal Patchwork" sampler tray for 2 more people is worth it at $10 per person. I'm definitely going to ask my significant other to come back here with me!

UPDATE 05/11/10: The Le Parfait Deal is back for the months of May and June. For a mere $10, enjoy 3 special meals almost any time any day except for dinner on the weekends (after 5pm on Fri-Sat and after 4pm on Sunday). I'm not talking about sandwiches either, but rather 2 sides with a main entree of grilled filet mignon, sauteed halibut or plat du jour (French for chef's daily special). I'd love to come here on a weeknight for a nice early dinner during happy hour (hint hint if my better half is reading).

18. Buona Vita is Buona Anytime

View Comments
Buona Vita is my personal favorite Italian restaurant in Hermosa Beach for any occasion, whether it's a first date, your 365th date night or even a group birthday dinner. This cozy restaurant is popular especially during summer time, so the atmosphere is always lively during weekdays and weekends. Since it's first come, first serve, put your name down on the wait list, if there is a wait, then take a quick stroll on The Strand walkway to admire the sunset on the beach.

The menu is quite reasonable (see online), especially after a $25 gift certificate from Restaurant.com, which you can buy online right now for ONLY $4 instead of the regular $10 each. The discount code "harvest" expires on Nov 5th (yes, tomorrow, so I posted this a half-day early), but gift certificates have NO expiration date in the state of California. The minimum food purchase is $50, so you can spend as little as $25 out of pocket. That easily covers appetizer, salad, 2 entrees, and dessert. The best part is that there is no corkage fee at Buona Vita, making it a favorite among the locals to no surprise. Another TIP: Park behind the "Skate Park" about a block away for free or try to find a spot in the neighborhood for free during off-peak season (double check the street signs). Have a buona time!

16. Champagne, Sparklers & Bubbles, Oh My!

View Comments
Bristol Farms offers something more than a simple wine tasting. For a set price ($23 plus tax), they serve you while you sit at a table and enjoy 6 wine tastings PLUS a light meal (bread, soup or salad, and a main entree with one or two sides, AND a dessert). Considering the value, this may not be the cheapest date idea, but perhaps a first date idea. You can't order any more or any less (besides a tip), so sticking to a budget will be easy. Depending on the location, the wine tastings are on either Tuesdays or Thursdays starting at 5:30 or 6 PM for 2 hours, with the theme changing every week (see schedule online). Please note that the wine tastings will end in 2 weeks but will resume after the new year. The last one of the year sounds fun, "Champagne, Sparklers, and Bubbles, Oh My!" on Thursday, Nov 12th, in Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach or their other 6 locations. Due to the limited seating, advance reservations by phone is a must. If you're not a wine enthusiast, this is an easy way to try a few different ones locally without making the trek to Napa.

UPDATE 01/0710: Wine tastings will resume in February 2010, so check back for the schedule online.

UPDATE 06/02/10: The wine tastings are on sale right now with buy one and get one for 1¢ (yes, one cent), so that's $23.96 plus tax for two tastings with a light meal (or ~$12 pp). Reservations required.

Approximate cost of creative date idea = $12 Per Person + Tax.
Actual value of the cheap date idea = $80 Total Minimum.
