Grumpy Ladybug Activities Book Companion Speech Therapy for Preschool and Up
- Zip
Description
"I love that you broke this down by common core standard, as well as included social skill targets. It's so hard to find materials that include speech, language & social activities."
Inspired by The Grouchy Ladybug, this is a great story to help students with sequencing, comprehension, pragmatics, vocabulary building, phonological processes, and more. Use the thematic sticker chart and goal sheets as reinforcers after reviewing expected and unexpected choices.

What:
Bluebird Speech Early Literacy Narrative Companions promote the use of scaffolding with students who are struggling in the areas of story comprehension and phonology.
Evidence shows that the use of picture books to teach story grammar, character feelings, inferences, and sequencing can improve overall implicit and explicit comprehension (Paris & Paris, 2007).
• This is a 37 usable page download (85 total pages with black and white versions, instructions, and credits).
• Included are 7 narrative-based speech intervention activities to be used with The Grouchy Ladybug plus a bonus activity to be used with the popular character guessing game.
• This product is designed to be used as a companion to the book, not as a stand-alone product.
When:
Use this companion at the beginning or middle of the school year to establish/re-establish behavior and social choices.
Where & How:
Use in individual or small group speech sessions. Can be used across 7-8 thirty-minute sessions, not including the book reading time.
ACTIVITY DETAILS
Activity 1: Comprehension
Print and cut out comprehension cards. Play a board game (e.g. “The Ladybug Game”) and hide cards in the deck.
Activity 2: Sequencing
After reading the story, ask students to color the pictures and number according to the sequence of events. Write down or have students write what happened in each part of the story and staple together to make a mini-book.
Activity 3: Pragmatic No Prep Worksheets & Reinforcement Charts
Circle the expected and unexpected choices that were made by characters in the story. Print behavior sticker chart and use as reinforcement throughout the school year. For example, the student receives a sticker for each session if they are making expected choices. Print and write student goals in their own words on each star.
Activity 4: Ladybug Behavior Choices Craftivity
Discuss expected and unexpected choices in the story and brainstorm others related to the speech therapy or intervention setting. Ask students to first write down 1-2 expected and unexpected choices on the ladybug “body” and then complete the craft!
Activity 5: Vocabulary No Prep Worksheets & 100 Punches
- Beginner: Match the antonyms and the items that go together. Complete the sentences using the written prompts.
- Advanced:
- Describe each item from the story using the question prompts provided.
- Students punch a hole for each accurate detail.
- Punch a hole in the corner and secure with a paperclip for home practice.
Activity 6: Phonological Process: Stopping
Using a hole punch, students track repetitions of stopping errors on /s/z/f/h/ depending on their level in the speech hierarchy:
- word
- sentence (imitated or read)
- prompt for generated sentence
The words are arranged by place (alveolar, labiodental, etc.) of speech production.
Activity 7: Phonological Process: Syllable Reduction
Using a hole punch, students track repetitions of multisyllabic words depending on their level in the speech hierarchy:
- word
- sentence (imitated or read)
- prompt for generated sentence
The words are arranged by number of syllables (2-5).
BONUS Activity 8: Guess What? Game Overlay
- Print and cut along dotted lines.
- Use as an overlay in the portable, electronic version of the popular character guessing game.
