The first night of the 2010 Miss Alabama pageant wrapped up tonight at the Samford University Wright Center with three winners in two preliminary competitions.

The contestants answered on-stage questions on everything from health care and the BP oil spill to texting while driving and the Alabama education system.

"I wouldn't mind implementing an education lottery in Alabama," said Miss Covered Bridge Stephanie Shelton. "I think it has done great things in Georgia, and I think it could do great things in Alabama."

Swimsuit preliminary winner

There was a tie in the swimsuit competition between Miss Chattahoochee Valley Taylor Yates, who wore a yellow and black two-piece swimsuit, and Miss West Central Alabama Ashley Davis who donned a purple two-piece swimsuit.

"We don't break ties," said Nan Teninbaum, executive director of the Miss Alabama Scholarship Program. "I believe if the girl earns the points, she deserves the scholarship. Scholarships are what we are all about."

The swimsuit preliminary winners received a $300 scholarship.

Talent preliminary winner

Miss University of Alabama Shellie Street won with an energetic dance to Celine Dion's "River Deep Mountain High." She received a $450 scholarship.

Crowd pleaser

Miss Painted Rock Courtney Porter delivered an explosive tap dance to "I've Got Rhythm" for an audience that erupted in applause during and after her performance.

The preliminary competition will continue through Friday. The final competition will be held on Saturday.
