As recommended by many cafe hoppers, we finally visited the Instagramable Cafe Onion Anguk, which is popular because of its Hanok-theme and industrial-chic style. This newly opened Onion Cafe, is located near Gyeongbokgung Palace (main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty) at Jongno-gu is the 3rd branch of Cafe Onion and has been operating since March 2019. If you want to visit the one closest to your location, you can probably visit two other outlets, a more modern version at Gangbuk-gu (opened in 2018, next to the Gangbuk Post Office), and the first outlet at Seongsu-dong (started in 2016).
Unlike other stores, the new Anguk outlet is housed within a hanok house. If you don’t know, hanok means traditional Korean houses. Besides the beautiful interior, we’re happy knowing that this new Cafe Onion is strategically located in central Seoul. That’s why, after enjoying some coffee and pastries, we can easily walk to the royal palaces of Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung. You can also stroll around the historic Bukchon Hanok district while wearing Hanbok, a traditional Korean dress that you can rent from several shops near to the palace. The menu at Onion Cafe Anguk is not much different from its other outlets. Not only delicious coffee (starts from ₩4,000Won), I see that most customers also order their delicious pastries that are on wide display. The specialty pastry at Onion Cafe is the Pandoro, they’re known for it; a tall castella cake covered with generous amounts of powdered sugar. It looks like a snow-capped mountain, and we chose for the Injeolmi Pandoro, so it has Korean rice cake powder on it. The cake tasted good, but unfortunately, the texture of the cake was a little dry.
However, the flaky and buttery pastry from the Strawberry Flower quickly become our favorite! It is filled with cold strawberry cream inside, a perfect companion for my Hot Cafe Latte (₩5,000Won, equal to IDR 59K) on that cold afternoon.
The seating area is quite big; they have an indoor room with air conditioning, and outdoor space. But, because Cafe Onion Anguk offers many Instagram-worthy photo spots, it’s quite difficult to find seats even before lunch. Fortunately, there are no rules like in other cafes where each customer must order at least one order. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and spent 15,500Won at Cafe Onion Anguk, Seoul. The ambiance, minimalist hipster vibe, and the whole experience, really worth a visit!
