Obviously, a tripod head preference is a personal choice. Upfront I will state that I'm a left-handed ambidextrous person who uses both hands equally well. I can operate the "handles" for vertical and horizontal orientation simultaneously without discomfort. This isn't a requirement to make the fine adjustments; you can use the same hand at different times. I just don't use it that way. When I adjust the head, I feel in control of the camera's positioning in the same way that driving a stick shift transmission compares against an automatic transmission.
I owned this head once before. It was secured to a previously owned tripod that was lifted. Originally, it came as part of a tripod kit and yes, I did get used to it, happily. When I considered my replacement gear, I realized that I liked the flexibility this head offered for use by a camera AND a video camera, too. It's easy to tighten and loosen and my camera, with its heaviest lens, has never slipped from it's position. The quick release is secure if you use it correctly. I was horrified reading many reviews of ball head users having overtightened to cause their adjustment screws to have become "stripped" so the camera slips when in final position. By the design on these screw arms a user would have to be strong like the Hulk to over-tighten it inadvertently. When you travel and transport this head, you can unscrew the adjustment arms for more compact packup, although I don't bother to.
If you are going to use your DSLR to make videos or use a small prosumer video camera for video making on a tripod, the pan function is smooth.
There are more expensive choices with stronger materials and different designs. For me, this is a winner for value and functionality.
I love the head piece it has pretty smooth motion and locks down tight when i need it to, i wasn't looking for a video camera head so it wouldn't be the greatest for shooting videos but that isn't why i bought this.
Love the quick release feature because i will be an on the go photographer, if i need to move it has to be quick and equipment needs to be in the vehicle in seconds and this does that.
Not the best head for travel because the handles stick out pretty far.
Overall a solid tripod head and not too expensive. I think the bubble level popped out once or twice on me so you might want to glue that in there.
