The National Portrait Gallery has enjoyed its best year with nearly two million visits in 2009/10.

It was an 8% increase on 2008/09 and 20% on 2006/07, the gallery reported.

The London attraction said its 2009 BP Portrait Award exhibition had 298,420 visitors - the largest number for any exhibition ever staged there.

Director Sandy Nairne said: "These visitor figures demonstrate that the gallery is a captivating place to spend time."

Its recent programme of displays has included Constable Portraits: The Painter and His Circle, Gerhard Richter Portraits, Beatles to Bowie: the 60s exposed and Gay Icons.
