11:30 AM - 1:00 PM: Keynote Presentation - Unflattening: Reinventing Scholarship

Presenter: Nick Sousanis.

Unflattening: Reinventing Scholarship

Dr. Sousanis will present on his experiences writing and drawing his doctoral dissertation entirely in comics form. Published by Harvard University Press as Unflattening, the work argues for the importance of visual thinking for teaching and learning in both its subject and its form and challenges the forms of learning traditionally found in academic settings.

In his talk, which will draw on extensive visual examples from his own work, Sousanis will call attention to the dominance of the written word, encouraging instead an interconnected production of knowledge created from both verbal and visual forms.

About the Presenter:

Nick Sousanis

Nick Sousanis is an Eisner-winning comics author and an associate professor in Humanities & Liberal Studies at San Francisco State University, where he runs an interdisciplinary Comics Studies program.

He is the author of Unflattening, originally his doctoral dissertation, which he wrote and drew entirely in comics form. Published by Harvard University Press in 2015, Unflattening received the 2016 American Publishers Association Humanities award for Scholarly Excellence and the 2016 Lynd Ward prize for Best Graphic Novel.

Sousanis’s comics have appeared in Nature, The Boston Globe, and Columbia Magazine.

Their tasks here will be to consider ‘what makes a DiP a DiP’, including how it accepts responsibility for driving educational improvement.

Dissertations for a Post-Pandemic World

Projects and reports such as Gutenberg-e, the 2016 CGS convening on The Future of the Dissertation, and the 2018 National Academies report on Graduate Stem Education for the 21st Century scholars have raised the call for new modes of scholarship and scholarly communication that better model the realities and demands of today’s work force.

The twin pandemics of 2020 challenge us to think differently not only about the format and dissemination of dissertations but also about the relationship between the scholar, the work, and the community in which it is situated.

This talk will explore what has changed, what is changing, and what new opportunities are on the horizon for rethinking the dissertation.

About the Presenter:

Suzanne Ortega, President, Council of Graduate Schools

Suzanne Ortega became the sixth President of the Council of Graduate Schools on July 1, 2014. An award-winning teacher, Dr. Ortega has also served on review panels for National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health and has been the principal investigator or co-investigator on grants totaling more than $11 million in private foundation and federal funds.
