From next week, the Blackwall Tunnel will be subject to a major refurbishment and will be closed to all southbound traffic from 21.00 until 05.00 every night except Fridays and Saturdays until December 2012 (well after the Olympics have ended). Northbound traffic will use the southbound tunnel, which will be closed to southbound traffic.
Although this tunnel was designed, and used for many years, for two-way traffic, this is now deemed too dangerous and southbound traffic will have to use the narrower, more sinuous, two-way Rotherhithe Tunnel instead.
