Tracy
Stefanucci named BCAMP Volunteer of the
Year
Tracy
Stefanucci, publisher and editor-in-chief of OCW Magazine, has been selected as the 2009 BCAMP
Volunteer of
the Year. The
award recognizes volunteer achievement by those who provide inspiration for
bright up-and-comers and better the magazine industry through their
involvement.
Since
co-founding OCW Magazine, a Vancouver-based arts and literary
magazine, in 2006, Stefanucci has nurtured the talents of over 40 industry
professionals, many of whom have gone on to work at other magazines, and arts
and publishing organizations. Her work at the not-for-profit, volunteer-run
magazine has also provided a strong platform for the careers of up-and-coming
writers, artists and musicians.
Jake Tobin Garrett,
writer and former managing editor at OCW
Magazine, says of Stefanucci, “She has created a magazine that is a
welcoming environment for everyone, staff and contributors, and that allows for
those in the community to flex their creative muscles in a collaborative
environment. […] Even when the going got tough—and with a not-for-profit
magazine, the going did get tough—Tracy maintained an
infectiously positive attitude and was always a wellspring of new ideas.”
Mary
Schendlinger,
senior editor of Geist magazine,
says, “Tracy
Stefanucci is the wave of the future for magazine publishing. For her it is
second nature to work collaboratively, share knowledge and insight, and inspire
new (and old) publishers to love what they do.”
Stefanucci
will be honoured alongside other regional recipients at Magazines Canada's
Cross-Canada
Volunteer Appreciation Reception, held during the MagNet
conference in
Toronto on June 3. She will also be recognized at the BCAMP
Annual General
Meeting.
BCAMP working to establish charitable arm
In an effort to ensure the continued viability of BCAMP,
the board of
directors has approved a plan to establish a separate arm of
the organization
that will apply for charitable status. This action was
recommended in the
association's 2006 business plan and in light of recent
public funding
cutbacks, the
board feels that now is the time to pursue it. The advantages of
a charitable arm of BCAMP include the ability to issue tax
receipts (thus
making the organization more attractive to a broader range
of funders) and increased
potential for capital and operational funding that can be
passed on to BCAMP.
The
society that will seek charitable status is called the
Western Society for
Periodical Education and Research (WSPER) and was
incorporated as a non-profit
organization on March 5, 2010. WSPER's mandate is the advancement of
education and its
planned charitable activities include research, bursaries
available to the
public, school outreach, mentoring and internship programs.
Its board will
include educators and researchers involved in the local
publishing industry.
WSPER is
now working with a lawyer to apply for charitable status, a
process that could
take up to a year. We will keep members informed of new
developments.
If you
have questions or would like more information about this
initiative, please
contact Rhona MacInnes at 604-688-1175 or exec@bcamp.bc.ca.
Members invited to enter lottery for BC Ferries promotion
BCAMP will again purchase a
number of promotional spaces for member magazines on BC Ferries during the peak
summer travel season. As has been done in previous years, we will select participants by a lottery of
interested magazines.
Twelve magazines
participated in last year's campaign (May 1–July 31), which had an overall
sell-through rate of 35% (with data for one magazine that should bump this
number up still to be reported). We are still confirming this year's campaign dates and the number of available spots. In order to participate in this promotion, your magazine must meet the following criteria:
- Must be a BCAMP full member magazine in good standing;
- Have a national distributor, such as Disticor or Coast to Coast;
- Have a barcode (i.e., must have a retail price)
Please be advised that you will be charged an RDA (retail display allowance) of 20%, as BC Ferries is considered a premium retail location.
If you would like to enter the lottery to participate in this popular promotion, email Rhona MacInnes at exec@bcamp.bc.ca by Friday, April 16, 2010, with the following information:
- Magazine name
- On-sale dates between June 1 and August 31
Good luck!

BCAMP tent at The Word On The Street
Planning is underway for this year's Word On The Street Book &
Magazine Festival, happening Sunday, September 26, 2010, at the Vancouver
Public Library.
WOTS brings out an estimated 35,000 visitors, and hundreds of participating
exhibitors, authors, performers and volunteers to Library Square for readings, demonstrations,
music, contests, panels and much more. It's a fun opportunity to connect with
readers and soak up the literary scene.
BCAMP member magazines are once again invited to sign up for one of the limited
number of free tables in the BCAMP tent by emailing projects@bcamp.bc.ca. More information
will be forthcoming.
Web
weirdness
Members may have received email messages with the subject heading "Form submission
from: Subscription Form" that contain nonsensical text and a link to a BCAMP
administrative page that isn't accessible to members. As you may have guessed,
these messages are not legitimate subscription inquiries, but rather the work of spam
bots that have found you through your BCAMP member webpage.
Unfortunately,
human verification tools (like CAPTCHA) that filter out these automatically
generated messages are incompatible with the BCAMP website's Drupal setup. We apologize for the annoyance (we get copies of all spam emails, too!) and we are
investigating other options to help curb the recent influx of spam.
In the meantime,
if you find these messages bothersome, you can remove the subscription email
option from your member webpage (please contact the office if you require
assistance). But be aware that we do receive a number of legitimate subscription
inquiries BCAMP through the site from visitors who were referred to
member page via Google. If the subscription email contains contact information and not jumbled text, you will want to follow up on the inquiry; the potential subscriber has not yet entered any payment information.
