Yesterday after the x-mas activities I went out in the garage for a much needed break, thought I would take a minute to break down my XD45 and clean it as I hadn't had a chance to the day before.  With the holidays, family issues, family illnesses etc it's been a hell of a month.  I'm fairly new to semi auto pistols, but been around guns all my life.  Made the worst mistake of all and forgot to drop the magazine and clear the chamber.  All of a sudden she went bang and I wasn't sure what happened until I saw my glove smoking.  Some how shot through my hand missing all bones and into my bench.  Feeling like a total idiot, definitely a x-mas to remember.  Check and then double check from now on.

Rule #1, always assume that the weapon is loaded

Rule #2, never reload while drinking

Rule #3, if you ignore rule #2, let someone else shoot the reloads

That's just stupid, I'm not gonna move my ammo to a different room.  Common sense goes a long way with firearms.

Do you keep a round in the chamber? If so you didn't notice the shell ejecting when you locked the slide back? Damn even after locking the slide back you didn't take note to the round in the top of the mag looking down in the chamber?

I would think dumping the mag and making sure nothing is staring down the pipe would suffice.

Dump the mag, rack the slide several times and check the chamber...it's not rocket science.

Always check, no matter what...   I remember X-raying a Michigan State Trooper who shot off his trigger finger while cleaning his "friend's" 9mm.  Man was he pissed, but I kept thinking to myself, who doesn't clear the action every time you pick up a gun?

It only takes a second to check...
