Environment champions to help Cornwall Council staff

Staff at Cornwall's largest employer are being asked to become more environmentally-conscious at work.

Cornwall Council said it hoped to cut its carbon footprint and energy bills.

About 50 staff in offices across the county are being recruited to act as so-called Green Champions and work with 21,000 colleagues to cut energy use.

The council currently spends more than £6m a year on energy bills for about 300 buildings. It said it aimed to cut that by 10% within the next 12 months.

Julian German, council cabinet member for the environment, said: "We know there are hundreds of staff out there who care about the environment and who would be keen to play a part in cutting the council's carbon footprint."
