Attention, spooks: Looking to unload some surplus surveillance gear? The Narcotics Affairs Section (NAS) at the U.S. Embassy in Panama City is in the market for wireless spy cameras disguised as baseball hats, jackets, pens and handbags.

In a recent solicitation, the Department of State announced it was looking for a variety of wireless surveillance cams "to be donated to the government of Panama for NAS program purposes."

Among the items on the shopping list: "portable video communications briefcases" that can transport and store incoming video and provide encrypted communications between the briefcase and transmitters; an ink pen with a high-resolution pinhole camera; a button with wireless audio/video camera; a jacket with a hidden camera; and baseball cap equipped with a climate-proofed camera that has a minimum run-time of 45 minutes. (Unsolicited advice: Perhaps the Russians can provide some tips on hidden camera placement?)

The agency also wants a "woman's pocketbook with hidden wireless video/audio camera" and a 2.4 GHz transmitter. Also sought: a utility pole camera system for 10-14 days of continuous video recording. Too bad the Sharper Image is in bankruptcy, they could probably use one of those motion-activated video camera spy clocks as well!
