The spaced agenda of the Virtual Conference takes place from 8-31 March 2021.  The conference draws connections between our 2021 themes, hearing from policy advisors, impact investors, academics, and politicians, as well as lawyers from esela’s international network.

The conference aims to promote a better understanding of the law in areas that are most deeply connected to our vision of a sustainable and inclusive economy that creates positive impact.

Law and lawyers play a fundamental part in building an economic ecosystem that works for all.

There is growing recognition among companies, investors and their advisors that, even in these unprecedented times, corporate and investment behaviour can support economic growth and social progress.

With the fresh challenges brought by the pandemic adding to climate and ecological crises, businesses face a changing world on multiple fronts. The advice they need from their lawyers is increasingly multi-faceted.

In response, lawyers in the esela community are developing specialisms spanning impact investment, and ESG and sustainability lenses, alongside structuring purpose-led businesses. To give rounded advice on domestic and multi-national deals, practitioners now need to hold an understanding of business and human rights, of the movement to adapt standard terms to mitigate climate risks and of deal structures to build infrastructure for social and human development as well as economic gain.

The esela Virtual Conference 2021 combines these essential conversations and topics under one agenda, drawing connections and examining the interdependence of these themes for lawyers, businesses, investors and policy makers.
