ALBANY, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State University researchers have a $4.8 million grant to research rural childhood obesity.
The Albany Democrat-Herald says the five-year program will conduct community-based research with extension offices in six Western states to study environmental causes of obesity. It also will develop programs in three rural Oregon counties.
The goal of the project is to improve the fitness level and reduce the body mass index of rural children, ages 5 to 8. Findings will be used to develop strategies to combat rural childhood obesity nationwide.
