Football League: your thoughts

It's as you were atop League One after leaders Brighton's winless run extended to three games after a 0-0 draw at Southampton, in front of 26,237 fans. On-loan forward Chris Wood missed a second-half penalty for the Seagulls, who still lead by four points after Charlton had to come back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Bristol Rovers at the Valley. Two points further back lie Bournemouth, who saw off Yeovil 2-0 (with the second a solo screamer from Josh McQuoid) and Sheffield Wednesday, whose 3-0 victory over bottom side Walsall made it nine points out of nine and of whom you can read more of in David Conn's excellent piece today.

Elsewhere in the division: Exeter fans were probably preparing for the long trip back south when they trailed 3-0 with 13 minutes left at Oldham. That they left Boundary Park with a point marks them out as the comeback team of the evening.

Peterborough's 18 League One games this season have now produced 75 (Seventy-five) goals after a 2-2 home draw with Leyton Orient. Manager Gary Johnson had reportedly been given five games to save his job before last night's point, so Jimmy Smith's 86th-minute equaliser will have gone down about as well as Aaron McLean's injury-time penalty miss, denying the Posh striker a hat-trick in the process.

Into League Two, where the performance of the night award was hotly contested. Port Vale moved to the top with a 5-0 smiting of Stockport, while Alan Knill's Bury matched that result on the road at Sincil Bank and sit third. However, Oxford's 2-1 away win at previous leaders Chesterfield just pips the aforementioned pair, Steven McLean's winner giving his on-loan employers only their second away win of the season, and lifting them to 18th.

And if ending their 35-match winless away win on Saturday wasn't enough, Gillingham went and made it six points in four days on the road with a 2-1 triumph at Barnet. "A few weeks back we would have crumbled but this shows you there is a lot of belief in the dressing room, we've worked hard and it's coming to fruition," said boss Andy Hessenthaler afterwards.
