Jerusalem (CNN) -- At least five people were injured late Monday after Gaza City was hit by multiple airstrikes, according to Palestinian witnesses and medical sources.

Israel Defense Forces confirmed the Israeli military was behind the strikes, saying they came in response to a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza into Israel in recent days.

Among the targets were two terror tunnels, two weapons manufacturing and storage facilities, and two terror activity sites, the IDF said.

The strikes come amid an increase in violence between Israel and Gaza-based Palestinian militants.

Militants on Sunday fired a rocket into the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon. A day earlier, dozens of mortar shells were fired into southern Israel by Hamas and other groups in what the Israeli military said was the heaviest barrage of fire since the end of the Israeli military offensive on Gaza in January 2009.

Also Sunday, two Palestinians were shot by Israeli forces near the border fence. A spokeswoman for the Israeli military said the two were acting suspiciously in an unauthorized area.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement Saturday night that he "views the Hamas rocket attacks on Israeli civilians severely, and Israel will take all necessary measures to protect its citizens."

The IDF said Monday that it held Hamas solely responsible for the rocket and mortar attacks and asked for the militant group to end its aggression.
