I have said it before and I will say it again, the fall and holiday season in Reno/Tahoe is my absolute favorite time of year. This is one of the few areas where I have lived that you can go straight from hiking, biking and boating, to skiing and sledding without missing a beat. It doesn’t matter if we have a warm late fall or an early cold winter, the Getaway team has your back with plenty of insight on things to do. We have several feature stories providing a great overview of what’s in store including Mark Your Calendars … , a collection of all the great events happening this time of year. Now Trending highlights all the new businesses, activities and offerings in the area that you just can’t miss. And, one of our newer features, There’s No Place Like Home presents a unique perspective of our editor as she is temporarily displaced from the area and gives an inside-out view of all the things she misses from here. In the mood for a nice tomato-filled cocktail? Read on to discover where to get the best bloody marys and don’t skip Savor The Sights in Reno/Tahoe touring all the great spots to eat and enjoy the region’s spectacular views. For some visual appreciation, flip to Down those Dusty Roads for a nice fall photo spread. Whether you found us online, in one of 17,000 rooms or vacation rentals, or at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and/or visitor centers, as you enjoy your time and want to post about it, please tag us @getawayRT, #getawayRT and , @getawayrenotahoe. DOWN THOSE DUSTY ROADS Off-the-beaten-path views with a breath of fresh air. By Nicole Marsel

There is a certain type of beauty when you stumble upon a place that’s out of cellphone service, away from the city, and has open scenery as far as the eye can see. Dusty roads often seem to lead to nowhere as they disappear into the most beautiful views you have ever seen.

Photo this page: Benjamin Sullivan (Shepard’s Gate); Photos opposite page: John Considine (Monitor Pass), Benjamin Sullivan (Hold Fast)

14 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Monitor Pass

John Considine is a phenomenal photographer and videographer from South Lake Tahoe who typically shoots with the Panasonic GH5 but this breathtaking photo over Monitor Pass, southeast of Lake Tahoe, was taken with an iPhone 6s. This shot proves that it doesn’t always matter what lens you use to catch something magnificent. @considinemedia

Shepard’s Gate

This photo brought peace to photographer Benjamin Sullivan’s life during a very hard time. Catching a storm and wildflowers in a blended harmony over Bridgeport, Calif. reminded him to get away from the hustle of life, find a quiet place to rest, and remember there are unexpected moments of beauty in our lives. emanategallery.com (owned by Benjamin Sullivan and Angela and Ron Cabrera)

Hold Fast

The leading line of this shot and the contrast of the trail draws you deeper into the photograph taken near Mammoth Hot Springs. Benjamin also took this photo to encourage people to stick to the things in their life that bring the most fulfillment, because who knows where the journey may lead ... perhaps to your next amazing hot springs destination! Go for a drive, breathe in the open air, bring an actual map, and get lost in the desolate scenery. You never know what dusty road will drive your favorite memories.

SINCE TIME

16 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Fo

r the past 10,000 years, indigenous people have inhabited the Great Basin area and shaped its history and culture. In the Reno/Tahoe region, the Washoe and Northern Paiute tribes are an active and integral part of the community. According to tribal history, the Washoe have inhabited the region since time began. The word “Tahoe” actually is a mispronunciation of the Washoe word for “da ow,” which means “the lake.” Tahoe continues to be a sacred place for the tribe. Each year, tribal members gather at the lake’s edge to bless the water and themselves. One of the Washoe’s most revered sites is Cave Rock on the southwestern shore. Likewise, the Northern Paiutes are deeply grounded in their environment, as evident by the names of different bands. For example, members of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe are called Kuyuidokado, or people who eat Cui-ui, after the Cui-ui fish, which is only found in Pyramid Lake. There are many ways to explore Native American history and culture while you’re here. Let’s take a peek at some museums and attractions where you can learn more about the region's indigenous people. About an hour’s drive north of Reno is Pyramid Lake, the largest remaining body of water that was once part of the ancient lake to the past Lake Lahontan that covered most of northern Nevada. Located on the Paiute Indian Tribe reservation, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Museum and Visitor Center is an ideal location to visit to learn more about the lake's fascinating history and its native inhabitants. Exhibits at the multi-purpose museum explore the tribe's history, culture and offer insight into the importance of the lake and its surrounding landscape to the Paiute people.

Under one sky In Nevada’s capitol, Carson City, the Nevada State Museum teaches history and culture using materials left in the American West and Nevada territory. Two of the museum’s galleries include Native American artifacts and exhibits. In the North Changing Gallery, the Our Nevada Stories: Objects Found In Time exhibition includes original Native American art. Explore Under One Sky is a permanent Native American exhibit from their perspective and in their own words. Find out when humans first occupied the Nevada portion of the Great Basin, the natural foods they collected, and the skills they used for survival. See a reconstruction of a Great Basin cave containing evidence of past cultures and climate. nvculture.org

Nativetrails At Donner Memorial State Park, check out the Visitor Center, which depicts the history of the area and the people who came into this part of the Sierra, including local Native Americans. Located at about 6,000 feet in Truckee, the park’s visitor center includes a great deal of Native American history and artifacts. The Truckee River and the town of Truckee are named for a Paiute Indian chief who safely guided the wagons of pioneers over the Sierra Pass into California. parks.ca.gov

Other displays focus on Pyramid Lake’s natural history and the many creatures that make the lake their home, including the Cui-ui fish and the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. pyramidlake.us On display at the Nevada Museum of Art through January 2019, the Art of the Greater West Collection aims to connect the artistic practices and diverse cultures of people in the Greater West superregion, which spans from Alaska to Patagonia, and from Australia to the American West. The artworks included in this small, focused, survey exhibition encourage conversations about indigenous cultural practices such as mark-making and mapping, visual representations of settlement and expansion, and depictions of changes to the landscape brought about by colliding cultures. nevadaart.org

Baskets of History Located in a reconstruction of the original Gatekeeper’s Cabin in Tahoe City, the Gatekeeper’s Museum showcases Tahoe history including information about the Washoe people. Exhibits include Native American baskets woven by Louisa Keyser (Datsolalee), Maggie Mayo James and other famous Washoe weavers. From the late 1880s until the mid-1930s, the Washoe tribe's necessity-based approach to weaving underwent a dramatic transformation as a national appreciation of traditional native arts surfaced in association with the Arts and Crafts movement. Tourism destinations, such as Lake Tahoe, created opportunities for many weavers to sell their work and women including Louisa Keyser became recognized artists whose work was supported by patrons. northtahoemuseums.org

Etched into time Head 20 minutes east of Reno and you’ll find Lagomarsino Canyon, one of the largest petroglyph sites in Nevada. Lagomarsino Canyon is one of the most significant archaeological locations of its type in the Great Basin and includes 2,229 rock art panels. The quarter-of-a-mile long site is one of only eight rock art sites in Nevada to be honored on the National Register of Historic Places. nvrockart.org

Casino gaming has been around for so long, but new forms of gaming have popped up everywhere in Reno/Tahoe. Nowadays people want more when they go out, they like the challenge of an escape room, an arcade with a bar or themed events including trivia night. Here’s a look at some new places to play!

we were not successful in our attempt. But now that we know what to do, I have confidence we will get further next time because we will definitley be there again! Also new to Reno is The Immersium. You can book your reservations online and I highly recommend getting your spot booked early! puzzleroomreno.com; puzzleroomtahoe.com; theimmersium.com

ARCADES

TABLE GAMES Bars and restaurants have started adding standout entertainment factors to their businesses. Many now carry board games giving patrons even more to do. The Glass Die in Reno is a board game parlor with over 500 games that you can play free of charge. I love playing games from all generations while enjoying a cold one! If you’re in South Lake Tahoe, visit South Tahoe Brewing, they too carry a variety of board games to enjoy while sipping on their signature beers. theglassdie.com; southlakebeer.com Everyone has that pile of random information they retain and trivia nights are where it all comes in handy. You really get to learn how much weird information your friends know when you play a trivia night. The Loft in South Lake Tahoe has their Tahoe Blue’s Trivia Night on Tuesdays starting at 9 p.m. with specials on Tahoe Blue Vodka drinks. And Beer NV in Reno has DJ Trivia nights on Tuesdays from 7 – 9 p.m. Come prepared with a team name and get there early so you can grab a spot, they fill up fast. thelofttahoe.com; beernv.com

STRATEGY I have always loved mystery books and movies; escape rooms are the perfect way to get the real experience. They’re challenging, thrilling and so much fun! I recently went to the Puzzle Room (with locations in both Reno and Tahoe) with a group of friends. We had a blast trying to figure out the next step and find the clue or clues needed to escape, unfortunately 20 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Relive your childhood by playing all your favorite arcade games but with a cocktail in hand! Press Start is a bar-cade in Reno that has the classic arcade games you know and love. I have had so many friends celebrate their birthdays here — this place truly makes you forget how much older we are getting and lets you can feel like a kid again, even for just a few hours. Get in the game, escape reality and jump into a different world at Anything Virtual in Reno. Once you put on the headset you are put in the middle of the action of the game of your choice. There are different levels and you can play alone or in a group. You can even rent a few booths and play with your friends in the same game. pstart.net; anything-virtual.com

ACTION Get your adrenaline pumping at Need 2 Speed by racing their indoor karts. When you get off the track check out their oneof-a-kind Black Light Mini Golf course. It’s a hole-in-one kind of day for all ages. When I took my nephews, they loved all the lights and I liked the added difficulty of playing in black lights. Another exhilarating adventure is EZ Air in Reno. They are a trampoline park and laser tag arena. Lager tag was an even better version of hide and seek with my nephews. They wanted to be on separate teams so we could play against each other. We laughed so much and had an absolute blast! I would highly recommend this as a family outing or even a date night! need2speed.com; ezairsports.com So, next time you’re in the area make sure to step up your game and try a few of these places! COSTUME CAPERS FOR FALL By Natasha Bourlin

26 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

Part of this season’s fun are the opportunities to transform yourself and head out on the town with other costume-clad celebration seekers. Whether you’re looking to be wicked, whimsical or wondrous, here are several area places to find your alternate persona, plus some ideas on where to show it off.

ARRRRRRR YOU READY FOR COSTUME PARTIES?

To get really creative with your costuming, skip the big box or online stores and hit these locally owned shops, most in Midtown Reno. At the Melting Pot World Emporium, you can find fantastically funky options including goggles, body paints, colorful attire, fake furs, netting, even an occasional tutu. meltingpotworldemporium.com Just down the street at Junkee Clothing Exchange, discovering masks, wigs, fascinators, hats, face and body paints, accessories, jewelry and more is as easy as spotting a jack-o-lantern on Halloween. It’s also a great spot to find ugly sweater holiday party gear, when ‘tis the season for those type of gatherings. junkeeclothingexchange.com PolyEsther’s Costume Boutique helps you tap into your inner geisha, gangster or anything else you can fathom. They carry Ben Nye theatrical makeup, specialize in character costumes, have entire pirate- and Gatsby era-themed sections and also rent extravagant get-ups to save you some dough for the holidays. They can alter anything you bring in or create the custom vision in your head. @polyesthers In South Lake, the Jolly Roger flies freely at CC’s Pirate Treasures, where you can find all the pirate booty needed to cover your own booty … and all the other parts. In Incline Village, pop-up and custom costumer Annette Summers of Dress the Party carries high-end costumes and vintage clothing to create your own professional theatre makeup, plus offers custom fittings and consultations by appointment. ccspiratetreasures. com; dresstheparty.com

FANCIFUL FUN Decked out in your ghoulish garb, fantastical fairy gear or Santa costume? Head to any of these events, ranging from family friendly to fairly frisky. October 20 in downtown Reno, the undead come out to … well, drink. Heavily. At the annual Reno Zombie Crawl, get out your finest green goop and freshly eaten flesh, grab a cup for $5 at any of the 45-plus participating bars, and scare the daylights out of the living while imbibing from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. crawlreno.com On Saturday, October 27, MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa on Tahoe’s south shore will host the 40th Annual Freakers Ball. Costume up and get down to live music, DJs, go-go dancers, drink specials and a costume contest featuring more than $10,000 in cash and prizes. montbleuresort.com All ages are welcome at the 7th annual Pumpkinpalooza event in Sparks on October 21. A rousing pumpkin derby race, games, live music, a children’s costume parade and much more create a carnival feel in Victorian Square from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., all to benefit the nonprofit Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living. pumpkinpalooza.org

Calling all costume-clad creatures to Halloween Hollow on October 27, taking place in Reno’s Riverwalk District from 5 to 7 p.m. Download their online treasure map and find all the goodies being doled out by the Riverwalk merchants. renoriver.org On October 27, costuming up to celebrate Nevada’s birthday makes the Nevada Day Parade in Carson City from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. even more fun. This year, more than 200 entries will float down the state capitol’s main drag. nevadaday.visitcarsoncity.com Saturday, December 15, the banks of the Truckee River will be teeming with tacky sweaters during downtown Reno’s annual Ugly Sweater Wine Walk from 2 to 5 p.m. Deck the Riverwalk with your ugliest holiday-themed attire and enter their costume contest, grab a wine glass at one of the participating merchants for a $20 tasting fee that goes to support local nonprofits, and head on your merry way to dozens of drinking destinations. renoriver.org Later on December 15, the notoriously fun Santa Pub Crawl begins at 7:30 p.m., also in downtown Reno. Pretend you just flew in from the North Pole, grab your most merry or obnoxious holiday garb and join throngs of fellow festivity seekers. Purchase a cup at one of their participating locations for drink discounts at the partaking bars, who happily brace themselves for this rowdy romp every year. renosantacrawl.com This season, make your friends do a double-take with your creative costuming and enjoy being someone, or something, entirely different for a day.

NOW TRENDING Find a different you this fall with these new Reno/Tahoe opportunities. By Meghan Burk

THE CREATIVE YOU Out with the paint and in with the plants. Let your imagination take root at Succulents & Wine, the newest DIY attraction in Reno! Create a trendy cacti or whimsical succulent while sipping your favorite rose. These hot houseplants are perfect for those without a green thumb (like me). This is a great mid-week attraction for a relaxed evening out. Friends and I went for a great happy hour, scheduled Wednesday – Friday from 4 to 7 p.m., with wine specials and discounted plants! It’s as easy as picking your container, plant, pebbles and fairy garden flare … then let your creativity grow. succulentsandwine.com THE ADVENTURER YOU Be one of the first to experience Tahoe suspended from above atop the newest climbing route in Squaw Valley called The Tahoe Via Feratta by Alpenglow Expeditions. Opening this fall, these style of routes are popular in Europe and Canada, as they bring an exciting taste of rock-climbing and mountaineering, without needing any prior experience. Imagine an installed cable wrapped around the mountainside, allowing you to safely scale the exposed rock and enjoy the thrilling views. Choose a half- or full-day guided adventure. tahoevia.com

FIND YOU THIS FALL. SHARE YOUR ADVENTURES AND STORIES WITH ME BY TAGGING @GETAWAYRENOTAHOE @MEGHANBURK. HAPPY ADVENTURING!

THE FOODIE YOU Try Holey Schmidt! These donuts are good. Even better than the play on words, these fried rounds of goodness can be found inside The Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum in downtown Reno. You’ll have a hard time choosing between the delectable 50 – 75 unique flavors baked daily, so go for at least two donuts with a cup of locally roasted Old World Coffee to dip in. My favorites are the oreo cheesecake, overfilled Nutella, and the traditional old fashioned with cinnamon and sugar. @holeyschmidtdonuts

Escape to these nearby areas for a fun-filled fall. 36 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

By Natasha Bourlin

Summer went by in a flurry of activity, and now, as the fall colors emerge and winter looms, you’re pining for a getaway. There are plenty of easy, entertaining and relaxing autumn sojourns to explore right here in the Reno/Tahoe region that require no lengthy travel times, and often offer some good shoulder season deals. We’ve put together some sample activity-based itineraries for you here, now it’s time to point yourself in any direction and make an adventure of it.

Squaw Valley Upon entering Squaw Valley, you feel as if you’ve been transported into a magical alpine oasis, removed from the rest of the world. Towering, craggy peaks blanketed below in trees tinged with crimsons and golds embrace you as you decide what to do first. Luckily, there’s plenty. Take advantage of seasonal specials at the Resort at Squaw Creek’s full-service spa, then dine at any of their six on-site restaurants. Their 14th annual Magical Memories event offers several weeks of family friendly events come November, as well. Or, nearby at the Village at Squaw Valley, solace seekers can find stunning views, plus dozens of eateries, shops and bars. squawalpine.com; destinationhotels.com/squawcreek Get your heart pumping this fall and be among the first to ascend Squaw’s new Via Ferrata protected climbing routes up the steep Tram Face. Comprised of permanent steel anchors and cables, Alpenglow Expeditions built the new routes and leads the full- or half-day tours up them that even novices can tackle. Fall is also perfect for some on-foot area exploration through Shirley Canyon’s granite fields, evergreens and hue-changing aspens up to serene Shirley Lake. alpenglowexpeditions.com

South Lake Tahoe Like birds prepping for winter, head south. Nightlife and events are plentiful in the surrounding casino resorts and Heavenly Village, the outdoors offer scenic hikes and bike rides, plus there’s never a lack of dining or imbibing options on Tahoe’s south shore. theshopsatheavenly.com For a more rustic South Lake escape, head to picturesque Camp Richardson, where their notoriously delicious and drinkable rum runners plus good grub await all year long at the Beacon. Then, rent a bicycle at their Mountain Sports Center (open weather permitting) or nearby Anderson’s Bicycle Rental and take a ride on the scenic, paved Forest Bike Trail. camprichardson.com; andersonsbicyclerental.com

West Shore On Tahoe’s serene, picturesque west shore, overall wellness is priority at historic Granlibakken, nestled high in the trees and teeming with activities. Relax with a massage, facial or other treatments in the Lighthouse Spa Mountainside, and find your center at their Wellness Weekend event on November 9 – 11, filled with yoga, workshops, seminars and a marketplace. granlibakken.com; lighthousespa.com Along the shoreline are many places to dine or pick up snacks for a lakeside picnic, like the West Shore Market & Deli or Spoon Café, then head to Ed Z'berg Sugar Pine Point State Park. Get a dose of history at the Tahoe Maritime Museum and cruise the shops in neighboring Tahoe City. For some two-wheeled, four-legged fun, rent a tandem bike at Olympic Bike Shop and ride to one of the neighboring beaches to watch the sunset. westshoremarket.com; spoontahoe.com; tahoemaritimemuseum.org; parks.ca.gov; olympicbikeshop.com

North Shore Depending on the weather, which can change at any given moment in fall, tackle the North Lake Tahoe Ale Trail by foot, boat or bike. Download the interactive map, then head out and make refreshing yourself with Tahoe’s many microbrews and menu items a sport of sort. Then, catch a live show at the historic Crystal Bay Club. gotahoenorth.com; crystalbaycasino.com

Downtown Reno If you’re longing for a more urban adventure, head to downtown Reno. At The Row, three different resorts are filled with shows and live entertainment, a huge array of restaurants, a luxurious, brand new 21,000-square-foot spa that drew its inspiration from Tahoe, even a circus midway. Stroll along the Truckee River or on a guided public art tour with Art Spot Reno, peek into the area shops and ascend the world’s tallest climbing wall at the Whitney Peak Hotel. therowreno.com; whitneypeakhotel.com; artspotreno.com Whether a resident of the region or a visitor looking for activity inspiration, there are many fall adventures to be had right here in Reno/Tahoe. Fine red and white varietals accompany cheese platters featuring a selection of imported and domestic cheeses

www.thecorkandmore.com

@thecorkandmore

By Rae Matthews, Elevation Eats

Wine and cheese may be the two most perfectly paired foods on Earth. Most of us have a sense of what kind of wine we prefer (or can at least fake our way through a tasting), but do you know what cheese goes with your glass? Finding which bite of brie or blue is best with your bottle can be quite the experiment, as the flavors of both will play off of each other dramatically. Here are some great places around Reno/Tahoe to test your palate. Savory South Lake Tahoe Our first stop is at the stylish Jimmy’s Restaurant at The Landing Lake Tahoe Resort & Spa. This elegant spot sits waterside near the casino corridor. With one of the best wine lists in town, you’ll be sure to find

something new and different. They serve a chef ’s selected cheese platter at lunch and happy hour, but for a real cheesy delight try the kataifi-wrapped feta, topped with raisin oregano dressing and Greek organic honey, with a dry Riesling. thelandingtahoe.com The Coachman Hotel brings an urban flavor to the mountains. The chic lobby offers wine, beer, coffee and an assortment of games to hotel guests and drop-ins alike. They have a selection of tapas that includes a generous cheese platter. Try a Sangiovese with either cheddar or gouda. coachmantahoe.com New to the area, Tahoe Pourhouse, offers a very user-friendly selection of wine on tap.

40 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

If you are uncertain of your wine preferences and don’t want an eager employee watching as you make your way through a tasting (and try to come up with knowledgeable sounding adjectives) then this is a great way to taste wine, uninhibited. You’ll be charged by the ounce so you can try a little bit of everything. They offer a chef ’s choice cheese platter. See which savory red you like best with the blue. tahoepourhouse.com For a little bit of everything, stop by The Cork & More. Part deli, part bistro, part bakery, part gift shop, but mostly a one-stop shop for wine, cheese and charcuterie, you’ll find everything you’re looking for (and then some) at this local favorite. thecorkandmore.com

Tangy Tahoe City Christy Hill Lakeside Bistro is an intimate spot in Tahoe City that boasts one of the best views on the lake. Lauded by Bon Appétit, their expansive wine list covers the gamut of flavors and price points. From this sunny vantage point, a dry rose paired with a mild brie would be hard to beat. christyhill.com Tannic Truckee Trokay in Truckee brings fine dining excellence to Tahoe. They take great pride in their American-sourced cheese selection. In addition to one of the most innovative menus in the area, including an enticing chef ’s choice menu, they have an extensive list of dessert wines. They even offer classes in cheese tasting. This would be a delightful spot for a tawny port paired with a hard, salty cheese such as a Parmigiano-Reggiano (and a bite of chocolate). restauranttrokay.com Jammy Genoa For a special treat, visit The Pink House in Genoa. This historic building is now the home of one of the most charming spots in Reno/ Tahoe. Their cheese selection includes hard-to-find European favorites. I recommend ordering the wine sampler and then letting their cheese monger choose a selection of cheeses for you. The cheese platter also comes with honey and fruit to pair with your cheese, so along with the wine you will have endless combinations of flavor. thepinkhousegenoa.com Refined Reno Liberty Food & Wine Exchange believes in the power of the local food community to bring people together, so bring your friends to share cheese and swap stories. Their cheese selection includes cow, goat and sheep, so try a little goat cheese with a Sauvignon Blanc for a taste of fall. libertyfoodandwine.com Fine Vines pairs wine and cheese with music and fun. There is a constant rotation of live music, comedy, karaoke and more. On Thursday evenings they even offer a free wine tasting with a purchase of a bottle or glass. finevines.net For a truly refined experience, you can indulge in your wine and cheese while lounging artadjacent at chez louie, located inside the Nevada Museum of Art. Their cheese platter offers a smorgasbord of flavors and nibbles. I recommend going full French and ordering the companion country terrine and chicken liver pate platter and a bottle of Bordeaux. Pinkies up! chez-louie.com Wine and cheese together makes any social occasion better. Calling all novices and aficionados alike to grab their friends and explore the gustatory possibilities that Reno/Tahoe has to offer.

Find the best bloody marys in Reno/Tahoe! By Britton Griffith

From scratch ingredients

If your late night has you up with an early start, Fox & Hound in South Lake is the place to kick off your morning. Open at 7:30 a.m. and serving breakfast until noon, this is the place to cure any hangover while you enjoy the views off their deck. Their award-winning, signature bloody mary is made with Tahoe Blue Vodka mixed with housemade chipotle and habanero barbecue sauce, barbecue rub and bacon salt. If you need more barbecue in your life, be sure to order the bloody mary and rib/meat combo, foxandhoundtahoe.com Some things just get better with time, Genoa Bar and Saloon, the oldest thirst parlor in Nevada has the 80-proof evidence to prove it. Established in 1853 and still standing in the Wild West, the bloody mary at this historic treasure will take you back in time … even if just to cure the hurt from the night before. Across the street is the Genoa Station Bar and Grille, where everything is made from scratch and recipes have been carried down from the owner’s grandmother. Order their classic cowboy favorite bloody mary for just $5.00 and snack on some tasty bites including cowboy pizza and the cowboy country breakfast. genoabarandsaloon. com; genoastationbarandgrill.com

Piggy perfection

Fall means football and if you’re going to rise and shine the right way, you need a place to get a crisp drink and watch the game. McP’s Irish Pub & Grill has 19 screens always showing the latest pigskin plays. This is a one-stop shop for everything you need to enjoy the autumn months, including a dog-friendly happy hour (a.k.a. yappy hour) and late night dining. They are one of the largest Guiness retailers in California, but if you’re looking for a little more spice, order their bloody mary extra spicy to for some kick in your drink before kick off. mcpspub.com If you find yourself by the Truckee River instead of Lake Tahoe, head to The Stick in the Riverwalk District. Tell them I sent you to order the Biggest Little bloody and get ready to be blown away at brunch. This drink has everything but the kitchen sink; garnished with a pork shank slider, bacon, shrimp, celery, lime, olives, asparagus, tomatoes, pickled green beans and pepperoncinis. thestickreno.com If you woke a little sleepy and worn out, you need the beer+chipotle bloody mary at The Brewer’s Cabinet in the Riverwalk District. Made with jalapeno-infused vodka and topped with a slice of bacon, this is sure to get you back to your top shelf self. Be sure to ask for their Kegs & Eggs menu each Saturday and Sunday. This morning miracle cure buys you steak and eggs and two glasses or a taster set of the best local beers around. Head down to sit inside or on their pup-friendly patio to nurse the night before. Sample their beers, order some bloodies and let the chefs heal you. thebrewerscabinet.com

The perfect mix

If you find yourself at Silver Legacy Resort Casino in downtown Reno, your best bet is to head to Drinx for the DIY bloody mary bar. Indulge in this hangover heaven on the weekends from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to mix Absolute vodka and an array of garnishes including the classics such as celery, bacon, green beans, with a variety of creative stuffed olives. You’ll love the yummy blue cheese-filled additions. silverlegacyreno.com The best way to fight away that pesky hangover is to keep having fun. Grab a friend or two, the closest celery stick and keep the memories of last night alive over a glass of tomato-filled goodness.

Eating experiences for all the senses.

Waterfront Views

When is a meal more than a meal? When it’s an experience for all the senses! Whether it’s a beautiful waterfront, dinner and show, or some apres-ski vistas, our meals are always made more memorable by pairing flavor with sensory delight. Here are ways to elevate your eating experiences around the Reno/Tahoe area. Mark Twain once referred to Lake Tahoe as “… the fairest picture the whole earth affords,” so it only makes sense that while visiting Lake Tahoe, dinner with a view is a must. On the south shore, The Beacon Bar and Grill, famous for their rum runners, sits on the southern end of the lake and has a large patio right on the beach where you can take in all of Tahoe. The Chart House on Kingsbury Grade in Stateline offers excellent seafood with a west facing view of the sunset over Lake Tahoe for every seat in the house. Popular for weddings and special events, Riva Grill, off of Ski Run Blvd., is known for their signature cocktail (in all its variations), the wet woody. 19 Kitchen & Bar on the 19th floor of Harveys Lake Tahoe takes the vistas to new heights, offering dramatic views of the lake from on high. And for a truly luxurious experience, try the Edgewood Restaurant, recently named one of “100 Most Scenic Restaurants in America” by OpenTable diners for their expansive lakeside views framed by stunning, architectural, floor-to-ceiling windows. camprichardson.com; charthouse.com; caesars.com; edgewoodtahoe.com; opentable.com Funny thing, the lake is just as pretty from the other side! Check out these gems on the north shore. The Lone Eagle Grille, like the Beacon, sits right on the beach offering sweeping views. Jake’s on the Lake has been a staple since 1978. They make delicious Californian-Hawaiian fusion cuisine while overlooking the Tahoe City Marina. Also in Tahoe City, the Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge boasts beautiful views that have earned them “Best of Tahoe: Best Outdoor Dining” by locals. loneeaglegrille.com; jakestahoe.com; sunnysideresort.com But the lake is not the only place to find waterfront vistas. The Truckee River flows through the beating heart of Reno bringing the sights and sounds of nature to meet urban dining. The appropriately named, Wild River Grille offers cotemporary cuisine and patio views of the Truckee as it races by the historic Riverside Hotel Building. The Shore Room also lives up to its name, pairing casual Mediterranean fair for breakfast, lunch and dinner with riverside vistas. Across the river sits Campo, a local favorite serving homemade pasta and wood-fired ‘za on the banks of the Truckee. wildrivergrille.com; shoreroom.com; camporeno.com For a truly refined experience, you can indulge in your wine and cheese while lounging art-adjacent at chez louie, located inside the Nevada Museum of Art. Their cheese platter offers a smorgasbord of flavors and nibbles. I recommend going full French and ordering the companion country terrine and chicken liver pate platter and a bottle of Bordeaux. Apres-ski and see

One of the great things about fall in Reno/Tahoe is that both the lake and the mountains are in season. Sometimes the best sensation is a little powder in your face before a well-earned meal. Let’s tour the best places to dine with a view and your ski boots still on. Ski into 360 Smokehouse BBQ located at Grandview Lodge in Sierra at Tahoe. Enjoy delicious barbecue while taking in the sites at 8852 feet! The West Shore Café at Homewood Mountain Resort offers a seasonal menu and unbeatable views all year round, and you can’t beat complimentary s’mores for skiers from 4 to 4:30 p.m. If you find the best complementary experience to an intense day on the slopes is a fine meal with a view, then try the Sugar Bowl Dining Room. They offer such dishes as elk tenderloin along with an extensive wine selection to complete your perfect Tahoe day. sierraattahoe.com; westshorecafe.com; sugarbowl.com

Alternative perspectives

Tired of looking at lakes and rivers? We’re not really sure how that’s possible, but if a pretty view isn’t cutting it for you, there are several alternate dining experiences to excite the senses.

Take in dinner and a show at The Loft, a speakeasy-style restaurant and lounge featuring magic shows and other live entertainment bedecked in red velvet curtains year-round. Soak in the healing sensation of a natural hot spring surrounded by mountain peaks at 1862 David Walley’s Resort Hot Springs & Spa before dining at their gourmet 1862 Restaurant & Saloon. There’s always something happening at The Flight Deck Sports Bar & Grill, located inside South Lake Tahoe’s private airport. The restaurant and patio overlook the runway where charter planes and military helicopters make a regular appearance. If you’re really looking to get off the beaten path, but still insist on eating well (of course), try Sorensen's Country Café at Sorensen’s Resort in Hope Valley, Calif. where you can enjoy the fall colors and maybe even play in some early snow. thelofttahoe.com; davidwalleys-resort. com; flightdeckslt.com; sorensensresort.com There is so much to see and do in Reno/Tahoe, so with all of this beauty and adventure be sure to make dining a part of the total experience!

Fall for By Britton Griffith

Fall is the season for snuggling. Get out and start shopping for flannel — the coziest fabric — and other closet must haves commemorating the season.

Tahoe squared Taking an afternoon to spend shopping is one thing, but to feel really spoiled you have to head to the Village Center Tahoe. This tourist and local hotspot is full of art galleries, designer brands and sassy salon shops. Sidestreet Boutique is my favorite location to change over my closet each season. VINTAGE VALUES By Emily Skyle

THE GOLDEN RULES TO SCORING EPOCH VICTORIES! I’m that girl, you know, the one that gets downright giddy when they get an amazing deal on clothes. If I get a compliment on my favorite maxi dress, my auto-response is “Thanks! I got it for $11!” and then I bask in the memory of my glorious shopping victory. Yet, with all my years of shopping sales, I had never really ventured into the world of new-to-me clothing. To me, “used” clothing meant ill-fitted, handme-down mom jeans that smelled like our weird neighbor, Hazel. That all changed 15 years ago, when my friend Bree taught me the golden rules of shopping vintage and it resulted in some pristine Jimmy Choo heels for $89! (Cue the angels singing!) In honor of paying it forward, I’m sharing my own golden rules with you, and my treasured list of the region’s best boutiques for amazing vintage finds.

54 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

1 RULE ONE:

Let someone do the initial work for you. Yes, you can shop online, hit up estate sales and spend hours at a general thrift store hunting for irresistible sales on potentially not-so-stellar clothing, but you don’t have to. Vintage boutiques are owned by people with a huge passion for what they do. They spend their time hunting down amazing pieces so you can spend your time looking fabulous in their clothes!

2 RULE TWO:

Look for an owner or employee with a sense of style you love. Does the window display excite you? Do their Instagram pictures leave you dreaming? Perfect! Finding someone with a similar taste in clothes is like having a personal shopper. For instance, love spoiling yourself with designer brands? Then you’ll love Labels Consignment Boutique in Reno, it’s like walking into a baroness’s 3,000-square-foot closet. Big fan of 1970s Western denim, Members Only jackets and obscure Rockabilly pieces? Head to Golden Jackal in Midtown for some killer items. 3 RULE THREE:

Shop with an open mind. When it comes to fit, don’t give up too easily. That fabulous ‘50s shift dress that’s a touch too long can be saved with a quick trip to a seamstress. Think you can’t pull off the latest ‘80s revival? Tackle the trend by incorporating one neon tank and side ponytail at a time. Addicted to your favorite little black dress, but want to add some vintage flair to it? Grab a fierce piece of costume jewelry. My favorite place for accessories is Hudson Vintage, located in Reno’s Riverwalk district, while you’re there check out their highly curated collection of clothing too. Perhaps you’d be more inclined to shop vintage if you were shopping for a cause? If so, head to Carson City and check out Classy Seconds, where 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the local domestic violence shelter program. hudsonvintage.us; @classy.seconds Embracing the vintage world is an amazing way to build an incredible wardrobe, without making your wallet shed a tear. So, head to one of Reno/Tahoe’s amazing boutiques and find a vintage value that will make your heart flutter and bank account rejoice!

Natural Distractions Whether it’s listening to the chime of golden aspen leaves as I pass on my mountain bike or watching snowflakes blanket freshly drawn snowshoe tracks as we explore 165 acres of forested backcountry in the Sierra, Sorensen’s Resort is my chance to take in all the natural distractions. This is where locals go to unplug and unwind from the hustle and bustle of life. This best-kept secret is tucked away in beautiful Hope Valley, Calif., just 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe. It’s the perfect blend of cozy and comfortable relaxation for outdoor lovers hoping to spend time away from emails and cell phones. And by the way, you won’t find any TVs, internet or cell service here, giving you the opportunity to read that book you packed. (You know what I’m talking about!) Offering an ideal mountain experience, enjoy endless recreation every season. In the fall, explore a wilderness hike or nature walk on their array of trails then relax, sipping mulled wine or hot cocoa as you cozy up next to the campfire. Kick up some snow in the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing across the valley floor, or take an exhilarating adventure with Hope Valley’s Husky Express dog sledding. Hosted workshops and other festivities are a special treat, from stargazing, to music, water coloring, photography and more, so be sure to check their schedule of events. Need to fuel those adventures? You’ll love the Sorensen’s Country Café. Serving three delicious meals a day, my favorite item on the 56 getaway reno/tahoe • planmygetaway.com

menu is their signature beef burgundy stew complemented with a glass of red from their stock of fine wines. On your way out, pick up some memorabilia at their quaint gift shop to remember your already memorable time here. When you’re ready to plan your visit, check their real-time weather conditions on their website. They are now an official National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather station, giving you the most accurate weather and conditions for that bluebird fall day or perfect snowbound winter. Sorensen’s is also excited to announce their electric car plug-in stations, partnering with Tesla to support gas-free cars on the road and becoming a Supercharger location to help keep Tahoe blue and the Sierra green. Elevated Fitness At this green gym in South Lake Tahoe, members power everything, including the lights, computers, fans and more. By using inverter-equipped spin bikes that deliver electricity back to the grid, cyclists provide the power for Elevated Fitness, which is one of only two of its kind in the country, and one of five on the planet. The gym also incorporates green materials and practices throughout the building including flooring made from recycled tires, low-VOC paint, energy efficient lighting, and low-flow toilets. Elevated Fitness continues its commitment to maintaining a low carbon footprint by offering bottle service to eliminate plastic bottle waste and towel service to reduce paper towel waste and deforestation. elevatedtahoe.com

Need 2 Speed

Edgewood Tahoe

Race at speeds up to 45 miles per hour and feel good doing it in the electric indoor racing karts at Need 2 Speed. Unlike gas karts, these state-of-the-art electric karts do not produce harmful emissions, which allows races to take place in a climate-controlled track. Bring some friends with you to have some clean, good-for-the-environment fun while racing around the track. Need 2 Speed offers group packages for bachelor/bachelorette parties, birthday parties for big kids, or just a weekend afternoon. Or, get your team’s blood racing for your next corporate event. Need 2

The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe demonstrates its commitment to being stewards of the land, guardians of the lake, and solid corporate citizens through many green initiatives. Before breaking ground on The Lodge, Edgewood completed several environmental improvement projects including treating and removing 500,000 pounds of sediment per year from Lake Tahoe. The Lodge is a LEED silver certified building and uses the 43-degree water from Lake Tahoe to source its cooling system, which eliminates the use of electricity to cool the water and reduces the property’s carbon footprint. Edgewood also donates all partially used soaps and other bottled amenities to the Clean the World organization, which distributes the products across the world to people who need them due to impoverished conditions. edgewoodtahoe.com

Peppermill Resort Spa Casino The Peppermill Resort Spa Casino is the only hotel in the United States that is entirely heated by on-site geothermal energy. In 2010, the property completed a $9.7 million project to tap into a vast reservoir of natural geothermal activity more than three-quarters of a mile underneath the resort. As a result, geothermal energy heats the property’s two million square feet of hotel, resort and casino operations. Since the completion of the project, the Peppermill has reduced its carbon footprint by 12,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year. The property has also invested millions more in other green initiatives including a closed-loop hydronic heating and cooling system that uses outdoor temperatures to cool water rather than energyintensive chillers. peppermillreno.com With options like these, it’s easy to find a place to play or stay in Reno or Tahoe and keep it green.

There’s No Place Like Home

A tribute to the places in Reno/Tahoe that we miss dearly. About a year ago, my husband, Masten, was accepted to the prestigious United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. To be honest, we expected this opportunity wouldn’t happen for our family for a few years and had to quickly decide if we would all go. Fast forward to this summer and you’d find the car packed and truck hitched to our travel trailer as we made our way to the sunflower state. Now that we’re settled and ready to conquer the looming winter months in our travel trailer with a two year old, there are so many things about the Sierra that we yearn for. We’ll skip a long diatribe about the gorgeous mountain ranges that I’m certain you’ve already noticed and get down to some of our favorites that we cannot wait to get back to.

Fall family fun One of our most cherished places to go when it’s cooler outside is the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum. This place is full of enlightened activities, art projects and playthings for the young and young at heart. nvdm.org

get the fresh crustaceans from our friends at Sierra Gold Seafood. You should see the giant tanks they have in the back filled with the good stuff! sierragoldseafood.com Speaking of keeping things local, there are certainly some great shops and boutiques where I find amazing gifts at the Southcreek Center in south Reno, Midtown and the Riverwalk District in downtown Reno, and the Shops at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe. shopsouthcreek.com, renomidtowndistrict.com, renoriver.org, theshopsatheavenly.com The night before we dive into those presents under the tree, pajama-laden and crab-filled we cram into our cars to look at holiday lights. A quick search online will produce the best spots to view the twinkling magic of the season, but our ultimate stop is the house at 5555 Junction Peak Drive in Sparks. Set your radio to 89.9 FM and enjoy the show! So, did all that talk about living in a travel trailer and exploring a new part of the country intrigue you? Be sure to stay tuned to future issues where I’ll devulge even more nitty gritty details. Happy travels and if you happen to find my missing ruby slippers, please send them my way!

You’ve probably spotted the golden, fiery red and burnt orange vistas surrounding the area. But, have you been among the trees in Truckee? A beautiful drive from anywhere in the region to this quaint town will not disappoint. And, if you’re looking for a little hike, head to the Donner Lake and Memorial State Park Visitors Center for a nice jaunt and history lesson. Oh, shoot, I was supposed to skip the bit about the beautiful peaks. Moving on … parks.ca.gov I can’t mention the fall in Reno/Tahoe without a quick highlight on some of the fun pumpkin patches. We always have a great time at the Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze at Andelin Family Farm in Spanish Springs, the Lattin Farms Fall Festival in Fallon, and October Fall Festival and Pumpkin Patch at Corley Ranch in Gardnerville. andelinfamilyfarm.com; lattinfarms.com; corleyranch.com Holiday traditions The year we got married, Masten and I started a Christmas Eve tradition of serving crab legs, artichokes and French bread to our families. It doesn’t matter if we’re in our home, a hotel room or the small slide out in our trailer for dinner, we pile the feast on a disposable table cover for easy cleanup and get cracking. This is one of our most cherished evenings of the year and we always

A MASTER DISTILLER with no shortage of spirit

His attitude is young, his whisky well aged. He pours everything he's got

into his job, as well as your glass. Care to wet your whistle?

In a community built on firm handshakes and old world work ethics, some new elements have come along that bring a fresh spirit to the scene - specifically, whisky, gin and vodka. They're the distilled craftworks of local spots like Bently Heritage whose products of passion are being perfected, poured and savored in a century old mill where tech and tradition make for one potent blend.
