Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Violence erupted in Afghanistan over the past 24 hours: a deadly suicide attack in the north and the death of the president's cousin during a coalition operation in the south.
A suicide attacker in northern Afghanistan killed a police chief and two officers on Thursday night, according to the deputy provincial governor.
Abdulrahman Saidkhili, the chief of Kunduz provincial police, was killed when the attackers targeted his vehicle, said Hamdullah Danishi.
Nine people were wounded in the evening attack in Kunduz city, he said.
A cousin of Afghan President Hamid Karzai was killed Wednesday during a NATO operation in Kandahar province, according to Ahmad Wali Karzai, the president's half-brother.
Ahmad Wali Karzai, also the head of Kandahar's provincial council, said the relative was killed by mistake.
Kandahar has been a central front in the Afghan war. Kunduz has been relatively quiet compared to the south, but violence there has increased recently.
