German authorities struggled to contain a widening tainted-food scandal after China temporarily halted imports of German pork and egg products in response to the discovery of increased levels of dioxin.

China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine announced the import ban on its website. The move followed an order yesterday by the northern German state of Lower Saxony for the slaughter of 140 pigs at a farm after tests found the hogs contained levels of dioxin, a possible carcinogen, exceeding allowable limits.
