Sprint has just confirmed on its official forum that Samsung Intercept will be getting the Android 2.2 Froyo update starting December 17th. The update is being pushed by Google in waves, so users might have to wait a little to receive it

After over a dozen of unconfirmed rumors, Samsung Intercept is being upgraded to the more appealing Android 2.2 iteration. In addition, a few bugs get fixed, including one for dropped calls, force closes on messages, inability to access google.com, phone contacts.

The software version of the update is S:M910.05.S.DL05, while the build version is Froyo.DL05, so users might check on that and see if their software is up to date.

Samsung Intercept's Android 2.2 Froyo update changelog is detailed below:

- Sprint Navigation (TeleNavGPS); - Dropped calls after unacknowledged call waiting; - Force Close message when opening up contacts.

Thanks to the Android 2.2 update, Samsung Intercept devices will be 2-5 times faster and searches, email and apps will run much smoother and more responsive.

The device’s web browser will also run JavaScript 2-3 times quicker than before. Obviously, Android 2.2 supports Adobe Flash 10.1, Adobe Air, file uploading and Chrome's V8 JavaScript engine.

In addition, Android 2.2 lets Intercept users turn their device into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot and use it to provide Internet access to up to eight other devices.

Unfortunately, Sprint subscribers will have to pay an extra $29.99 fee per month for the wireless tethering feature.

According to a message posted by a Sprint admin on the carrier's forum: “It could be up to 4 days before everyone receives it. You can go to the Android Market and download or update one of your apps and it may trigger the push early.”

Install instructions, as well as other information regarding the Samsung Intercept are provided by the smartphone's maintenance release blog.
