if i were an...

exchange student

q + a with sesil ivanova, who is currently an exchange student in wi, usa from bulgaria meet sesil My name is Sesil Ivanova and I am an exchange student from Bulgaria. Briefly said, I am a go-getter. I grew up in a small town in Bulgaria which only encouraged me to think big. I have a variety of interests like psychology, investing, travel and business structures but my passion is art. Art gives me freedom of expression and I’m currently working on becoming a full time artist + content creator.

what's it like being an exchange student? Words are not enough to describe the life of an exchange student. I believe everyone’s experience is very personal and undoubtedly going on an exchange has its pros and cons. For me, this exchange year has been a dream come true. I am meeting a variety of people from all over the world and getting to know their cultures. In addition, as an exchange student, I know that my time here is limited and I do my best to use it to the fullest and enjoy every moment. Such experience teaches you to be independent and gives you freedom that staying in your comfort zone never could. I’m incredibly grateful for everything that has happened to me and all the adventures that await.

what's your favorite thing about the experience?

Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria

if you could do anything for a day... I would leave my phone at home, take a plane to Spain and explore the beauty of Barcelona. Sesil (right) + other exchange students

Inspire to Create magazine 7

Tapping into other people’s minds and being unapologetically myself. Leaving your home country is scary but all the fear and judgement disappear the moment you get on the plane. I’ve had so many meaningful conversations here and I’ve been presented with perspectives that I would have never thought of. The most important lesson that I learned is that people all over the world are the same for the most part because we have the same needs. That’s why diversity has to be cherished and everyone should embrace their uniquenesses.

Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria

day in the life --

advice for anyone interested in doing something similar?

what's the most challenging thing about being an exchange student?

Be flexible. There is so much you can learn only if you are willing to open your mind to it and opportunities are everywhere.

The most challenging thing is being away from your natural family. I’m grateful we live in a time when we can facetime in any given moment but the intimacy of a real moment is gone. Having that said, at first getting used to the time difference and food can be pretty challenging. Thanks Sesil!

Bulgaria is located in southeast Europe, as shown. Sesil's (Bulgaria) pictures are in the northern part of the country.

Honestly, every day is different here which is something I absolutely adore. In general, I am more of a planner so I try to balance between grabbing new opportunities and staying true to my goals. A typical day for me starts at 5:40 with a routine that wakes my body and mind up. This gives me a productive start and a few extra hours to focus either on art or self education. I spend a lot of time developing ideas for future or current projects because I am going to be self employed in the future. Furthermore, I make sure I spend enough time with my host family and friends and sometimes we would visit places, some of which I never thought exist. Recently we went to the Mustard Museum and very soon my host family and I are going to Puerto Rico. As I said, a dream come true.

spain MADRID Welcome to Around the Globe! Travel the world by hearing from people who live all over the planet.

I'm Ana and I'm from Spain. I'm 16 years old and I'm an only child. I can speak two languages fluently and I'm learning another. I love horror movies and hanging out with my friends. tic or: very touris La Plaza May use during and fun beca re cause there a Christmas be around. little stores all

If you visit Spain, you have to go to the capital and to some other important and beautiful cities like Barcelona and Sevilla. Your location on the globe: I lived in the capital, Madrid. What are the three most unique things about your country? Food, culture and life in a village.

There are a lot of things that are special in my country. For example, there are little shops that are open every day of the year, and until so late in the night! And in the US, I didn't see any of those hahaha. When I first came here in August as an exchange student, I didn't understand much of what the people were saying to me. But I got used to the language, and normal things people do, and then it was much more fun.

on vaca tion in s pain!

If you live in a big city, like me, there is a lot of people. If you live in a small town there is barely anything to do. I lived in the capital, near the center, so there was always a lot of traffic and people.

Thanks, Ana! - Kate and Kylie

ASK THE

athlete with Brendan Monahan about Competitive Cycling We are excited for you to meet Brendan, a middle school cycler!

meet brendan Hi! My name is Brendan and I am 13 and am from Pennsylvania. I do road and mountain biking. I have gotten a podium finish 4 times in the state series.

describe your sport in a sentence. Whoever can push themselves the hardest.

what's the best part about your sport? I like that cycling is just fun, and that it can be challenging

what's the worst part about your sport? There isn’t really anything bad about it, except that some people are born at a natural advantage for it.

a look into a week with cycling I ride different amounts throughout the season. In the winter I ride probably four times a week inside on my trailer for about four-ish hours total. During the summer and fall, which is peak riding season, I ride mostly outside. I don’t keep things super regimented, just have fun riding and racing.

any advice for athletes who also do cycling? Ride, and have fun doing it.

Thanks Brendan! - K & K

Babies are called kittens. The most popular pet breed is the Holland Lop.

Rabbits live for an average of 10 years.

Rabbits purr when they are content and relaxed, like cats.

They can jump almost as high as 3 feet and as long as 10 feet in one jump.

To express joy, they do something called a “binky”. They will jump around and flick their feet and heads.

Since their eyes are on the sides of their head, they can see almost 360 degrees.

passion

all about Hi! My name is Lane and I'm the proud mama to my twin girls, Aria and Adelynn. I am a STOTT PILATES® Certified Instructor as well as a Qualified Instructor of Total Barre® and ZEN•GA® mat and equipment. My background is in dance education and performance. I started my business Pilates with Lane in August 2020 and teach livestream Tone, Stretch, Pure Pilates and Dance Break classes out of my home. It's been the perfect addition to my busy and fulfilling role as mama and I love seeing clients find that my "movement for a happy body" approach to fitness has really blessed them. I got into my passion out of a desire to understand how our bodies are designed to work most efficiently and effectively. My passion has grown as I've continued to learn how incredible the body is from a scientific standpoint and how I can better equip my clients to enjoy moving their bodies. Every time I get discouraged it's usually because I'm not seeing fruitfulness out of all my efforts to engage people into my classes. After feeling those feelings, I get to work. I start producing more helpful content on social media, connect one on one with social media followers, update my website, try a new ad campaign and listening to other entrepreneurs share their challenges and wins via podcasts. I love the aspect of creating that this business provides so I put my energy to work in these fulfilling areas. It helps to redirect my emotions from being discouraged at that lack of class purchases to getting that boost that connection and creativity provides. @lanegrosserfitness (insta) // pilateswithlane.com

how to:

learn a language A FEW TIPS + SPECIFIC IDEAS Being bilingual is something we all dream of, isn't it? Or maybe it's just me, but I think languages are so cool! As I'm trying to become fluent in Spanish, I want to share some tips with you all from my Spanish teacher, readers, and the internet :). I'm in no way an expert, but I hope you find an idea that sounds fun and to you as you learn a new language along with me. The overarching theme of learning a new language is immersion -- you want to surround yourself with it as much as possible. But how can we do this while balancing this all with everything else in life? The key is finding a way you enjoy, and then being consistent.

I asked my Spanish teacher for his best advice, and here's ten tips he gave me. First, use songs. Music is a boost for our memories! Look up the best songs in your language, and then find the lyrics. You can use a dictionary to figure out what the song is saying. This is a great way to learn grammar as well! (inspired by FluentU) Second: watch authentic movies. You can learn about the culture and the language all in one! Third, read books (i. e. written for Spanish language learners). Don't be afraid to visit the library to pick out some children's books! They are the best. Fourth, Duolingo! Or any other language learning platform. Push yourself! :)

He also recommends Duolingo podcasts if you're at the level to understand. Listening to comprehend is the best! He also mentioned the Coffee Break Spanish podcast. Fifth, talking with someone who speaks the language (this is called intercambio). It's scary at first, but remember it'll get easier! Sixth, visiting the country, obviously! Not easy to do, but keep it in mind. Seventh, take advantage of resources such as spanishdict.com. Eighth, use guide books and ninth, watch travel tv shows to expose yourself to the culture. Tenth and finally, be consistent!! The more you do, the quicker it will stick. :)

LET'S GET STARTED! Theories about how to become bilingual are great, but what is something you can begin today? We got you covered!

hit a 50-day streak on duolingo It sounds simple, and it is! But even being in the language and completing a lesson or two a day will add up. Plus, keeping my streak is motivation that always gets me :)

watch a movie and try to understand as much as you can

The best thing ever is if you happen to know someone who speaks it. Don't ignore this, and go talk to them! It will get easier the more you do it.

Most libraries have bilingual sections! If you're learning a more uncommon language, you might have to look harder, but just look! You'll be surprised by what you find. :))

Pay attention to what's being said (I would turn on captions!) Look up all the words you don't know, and write them down with their definitions.
