Nintendo 3DS: Super Mario 3DS Won’t Include StreetPass Says Shigeru Miyamoto

Legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed to British news publication The Telegraph that the long awaited Super Mario 3D for the Nintendo 3DS won’t feature any StreetPass functionality “unless a spectacular idea comes to mind.”

Miyamoto also confirmed to The Telegraph that Super Mario 3D will make use of the Nintendo 3DS’ gyro sensor. He explained that the gyro sensor is used within the game to control the camera as the Nintendo 3DS doesn’t feature a second Circle Pad.

“Sometimes people ask why the 3DS isn’t double stick,” added Miyamoto. “One is normally used to control the camera, but having the gyro sensor you can replace the analogue stick by moving the console, which is very intuitive.”

  1. I’m sure this’ll be a great game to play on the bus… not! I think that they’re getting their home and portable console mixed up what with Project Cafe’s controller featuring a touch-screen and 3DS games making you do things which are only possible at home.

Don’t make me lose faith, Nintendo.

  2. but if you have to move the console, it won’t be 3d anymore… because you have to hold the console in the same position to feel the 3d effect, so… it isn’t a very good idea :/

  3. Sorry Nintendo, but this is utter bullcrap. Such a design flaw, I just don’t know why Nintendo didn’t include a second slide pad, jeez, the simplest thing ever. It wouldn’t have impacted the price, there is enough space for it. Nintendo is just trying to be “intuitive” but they didn’t need to be in this case.

    1. ive been replaying DK64, and would have no problems bring the C buttons back. but if thats the case x and y need to go lol

  4. My guess is that the gyro-cam will only be used in 1st person, you know, to look around for hidden stuff and explore the world from a single viewing point. Most of the game will probably have an auto-cam like galaxy, one that lets you switch the angle with the d-pad. Seems most logical.

  5. Im guessing its an option and L or R can still be used to re-center the camera. Gyro movement is an option in ocarina of time 3d and there’s a ninja game from ubisoft has a gyro scheme that only works in 2d and a traditional button scheme when 3d is turned on

  6. NO NO NO NO

You’re ruining the point of the 3D, Mr. Miyamoto. It’s the same reason I can’t play Face Raiders and AR Games with 3D on – the sweet spot is too small to be moving the system around like that.

    1. For a Mario platformer that isn’t New Super Mario Bros.? Aside from Spotpass, I fail to see the practicality of online in this game. Miyamoto made the right call on that one.

  8. If you move with the console, your 3d won’t be ruined. Master moving your head with the 3DS.
