A Star Wars Friday Special! The End of Star Wars: Legacy by Randy Stradley and Freddye Lins

07/09/2010 2:43pm

We've got a very special Star Wars Friday for all you fans out there! As you might have heard, this August, Star Wars: Legacy  comes to a close with the release of Legacy #50. And while many of you loyal Star Wars readers are sad to see this fantastic title come to an end, Dark Horse Comics Editors Randy Stradley and Freddye Lins are here with a few words to start the healing process. Plus a special sneak preview of the Legacy finale! Randy and Freddye, fire when ready:

Randy Stradley here, your Legacy editor, and the mastermind behind Dark Horse’s whole Star Wars line. Word is that there’s something special about the fiftieth issue of Star Wars: Legacy, and I’m supposed to write a few words about it. All I have to do is figure out what’s so special about this particular issue. My assistant, Ms. Freddye Lins, will provide valuable (what else?) assistance. Say hello to everyone, Freddye.

What could be the significance of issue #50? Maybe some important anniversary for creators John Ostrander and Jan Duursema?

Freddye, check darkhorse.com. Find out when they both began working on Star Wars!

Okay, Freddye says John’s first Star Wars comic script for Dark Horse was for the appropriately titled Star Wars #19, from June of 2000. Jan began drawing Star Wars stories a bit prior to that, with a story in Chewbacca #2, February 2000.

Freddye, what’s two thousand plus ten? And how many years is that?

Ten years, huh? Okay, that puts both of them into their tenth year of producing Star Wars stories, right? Could that be it? That’s certainly a milestone worth noting, but if that’s it, why did we wait until August of this year to celebrate? Freddye?

What’s that? Story? Well, obviously, Freddye! We’re trying to find the story of why Legacy #50 is such a big deal. Perhaps it marks some significant number of issues that each of them has produced? Yeah, that’s gotta be it.

Freddye, look on the website and count up how many issues each of them has produced, and how many they’ve done together!

All right. Now we’re getting somewhere! If these figures Freddye has handed me can be trusted, Jan  has drawn a total of eighty-five issues of Star Wars comics for Dark Horse (she drew an issue for  Marvel way back when, but we won’t count that). John has written a total of one hundred five Star  Wars scripts for us, seventy-four of them for Jan. Hmm, 85, 105, 74. Naw, that can’t be it. Those  numbers, though very impressive, don’t signify anything that I can see. Heck, they don’t even work as  a locker combination!

Look, I’ll tell you what, Freddye—we’ll come back to this tomorrow. Attack it with a fresh set of eyes,  right? Anyway, it won’t hurt anything if I knock off a bit early tonight. See you in the morning!

Thank goodness he’s finally gone! Freddye here, everybody. I’m sorry about all of that!  You, of  course, know why Legacy #50 is so special, I’m sure. It’s because it’s the final issue of the series! For  forty-nine issues we’ve been following Cade Skywalker, waiting to see if he was going to accept the  mantle of his own legacy and destiny, and truly stand up to the Sith who have been ruling the galaxy  since the day they killed Cade’s father. Well, the wait is over, folks.

Jan and John have pulled out all the stops for this one—lots of action, a little bit of humor, great  characterization, and some really outstanding artwork. Not to overlook the contributions of inker Dan  Parsons, colorist Brad Anderson (who, along with his pseudonym “Joe Wayne,” has been coloring Star  Wars comics for as long as John and Jan have been writing and drawing them), and letterer Michael Heisler, but issue #50 also marks the seventy-fifth issue on which John and Jan have collaborated! Fifty and seventy-five are milestones in anybody’s book.

Now, I don’t think Randy will mind that I finished his blog, but I know he’d never forgive me if I spoiled any of the surprises in the issue. So, before I say too much, let me simply urge you to put Legacy #50 on your must-buy list. And try to remain spoiler free until you’ve read the whole issue!

Okay, I’d better send this blog before the “mastermind” thinks of some other angle to pursue. Later!

Randy Stradley has been an editor at Dark Horse Comics since the very beginning. He's basically the Yoda of Dark Horse employees, except instead of little and green, he's tall and has a beard. So, he's really more like Chewbacca. Like a Jedi Master Chewbacca. Randy! I have an idea for the next Star Wars series!

Freddye Lins has been at Dark Horse Comics for five years and has worked as an editor for three. She has the cleanest office in the entire editorial department and makes awesome cupcakes.
