Let's Go Extinct

Let's Go Extinct

Like some kind of indie rock puffer fish, Fanfarlo have the ability to sound bigger than they are, with the five band members toting a small army of horns, strings, keys, guitars, and drums. You hear it on the first track off their third album, "Life in the Sky": co-vocalists Simon Balthazar and Cathy Lucas trade parts as synths and shakers, horns and harmonies fill out the scenery. Such exuberance befits an album about life itself: Balthazar's lyrics here are about nothing less than evolution, extinction, and humanity. Despite the wry sentiments of songs like the title track and "We're the Future" ("We're a copy of a copy," he sings), the music is characteristically chipper. Some songs ("A Distance" and "Landlocked") sound decidedly '80s, festooned with bursting beats and squirming basslines. Let's Go Extinct is indie pop imagined as a school play about Charles Darwin.
