Lewes District Local Plan - Issues and Options

Closed Consultation

The consultation on the Issues and Options document was carried out from 9 July to 3 September 2021 and has closed now. We asked the community about their views on the new Local Plan and published a document with questions on Climate Change, the Quality Environment, Delivering Growth, Improving Access to Housing, Prosperous Economy, and Healthy and Sustainable Communities.

We received over 4,000 responses to the consultation questions. Thank you to everyone who shared your ideas and feedback with us. We will consider the issues raised as we prepare for the next stage of plan making, which we will consult on as well. Our Local Development Scheme sets out the schedule for the preparation of the emerging Local Plan.

Reporting on the results

Following the Issues and Options consultation, we are now publishing in full all the comments that we received. Comments received to each question are arranged on a separate tab of the Excel document. In releasing this report and dataset, we aim to give transparency to the consultation and plan making process.

Accompanying this data-release is a short, quantitative summary of the responses. This report does not contain any analysis on the consultation comments and should not be regarded as a ‘Statement on Consultation’, which we will publish with the next stage of plan making.

You can download and read the Excel document with all responses to the consultation here:  .

Lewes District Local Plan - Issues and Options

We are following the government’s process for developing a new Local Plan for Lewes district. The plan will cover everywhere in the district outside of the boundaries of the South Downs National Park which has its own Local Plan.

In recent years the Government has changed national planning policies and how it calculates the numbers of homes each area should aim to provide. As a result our new plan needs to reflect these changes and re-evaluate the number of homes that the area should provide over the next 20 years.

Our aim is to, in consultation with local people, businesses and other organisations, develop a Local Plan for the district (outside of the National Park) which takes into account the Government’s aim to increase housebuilding whilst maintaining the environment, character and heritage of the district.

Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report

A Sustainability Appraisal (SA) Scoping Report for the new Local Plan has been published alongside the Issues and Options consultation. The SA Scoping Report can be viewed and downloaded by clicking on the SA Scoping Report link in the text, or from under the 'Consultation Documents' section towards the bottom of the page.
