Call for Scouts to Join the Plastics Summit in Canberra this March
Scouts from around Australia are invited to apply for a scholarship to participate in the National Plastics Summit to be held in Canberra this March.
On Monday 2nd March, the Federal Environment Department are bringing together older primary school aged students for the 2020 National Plastics Summit at Parliament House, Canberra. Coordinated by the National Waste and Recycling Taskforce, the participants will be part of a youth taskforce to discuss solutions to our plastics waste challenge.
We are seeking up to ten scouts (in the last two years of primary school) from around Australia to be part of this event. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered for the selected Scouts (plus a carer/guardian/parent). We’re excited to offer this opportunity to Scouts from around Australia, giving them a chance to be part of the solution to our emerging waste crises and be part of the #Scouts4SDGs movement. School students from NSW and ACT will be represented already, therefore we are targeting students from other parts of Australia (NSW and ACT Scouts may still be considered if not eligible through school).
Participants will fly to Canberra on the Sunday (1st March), and the event runs from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm on Monday 2nd March. They can either fly home after the event, or stay another night and fly out Tuesday 3rd March. Guardians will not be required to stay at the event all day, and can leave their children for a few hours whilst children are with staff at the Museum of Democracy Australia (late morning till early afternoon). The event includes a Welcome to Country at Parliament House, and a presentation to the Minister and Prime Minister.
Expressions of interest to attend this event should be submitted by Friday 14th February through this online form. The National Adviser – Environment (Annette Cook) and Assistant National Commissioner – Sustainability (Patrick McCormick) will review the applications in the following week, aiming to notify the selected participants by Friday 21st February. We are mindful that this is during school term, though provides a fantastic learning opportunity for all participants, and we would be happy to provide a letter of support for any participant’s school if required.
