This seminar series is for UCSB Faculty of all disciplines - especially those in HFA, social sciences, and STEM departments.
The
National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), a research affiliate of UCSB, is a leading expert on interdisciplinary data science and works collaboratively to answer the world's largest and most complex questions. The NCEAS approach
leverages existing data and employs a team science philosophy to squeeze out all potential insights and solutions efficiently - this is called synthesis science
.
NCEAS has 25 years of success with this model amongst working groups and environmental professionals. And with support from the
Office of Research, is excited to pass on this expertise to all UCSB Faculty through the launch of this skill series.
Faculty will receive training in scientific programming (with an emphasis on the programming language R), team science and collaborative analyses, science communication, and data management. These skills will be utilized during the sessions through hands-on practice, and implementation of an environmental research question while working together in small cohorts.
There are three seminar sessions. The first and last sessions will take place in downtown Santa Barbara at NCEAS. The second session will offer five virtual workshops supplemented by remote office hours.
No experience in collaborative research or data science required!

- increasing your capacity to collaborate with researchers across departments,
