ABOUT

The purpose of Heart of Gold Adventures is to offer Hudson Valley teens an educational experience that includes cultural awareness and appreciation, service to others, and the fun of adventure, so they can be empowered to gain a greater sense of themselves and the world. Participants will develop a passion for exploration and community engagement, and learn skills to empower themselves to put their dreams into action.

We will work and travel alongside leaders and youth from the Himalayan Children’s Charities (HCC), a Nepali based organization that offers much in the way of service, sustenance, and enrichment for many young people in Nepal.

Youth Ambassadors on this journey with the Maya Gold Foundation will:

- Share their gifts, talents, and understanding of culture in the USA with the young people and teens of Nepal
- Make connections and friendships with Nepali youth through personal exchange and outdoor adventures
- Reduce the illegal trafficking of young people by raising their awareness of this issue and through our support of HCC, SASANE, and other organizations
- Develop an understanding of Nepali culture, customs and history
-Trek between remote rural villages
- Gain a perspective of the difficulties and resiliency of young people in Nepal
- Bring back their perspective and experience of Nepal to the Hudson Valley community through a creative event
- Participate in meaningful hands-on service work at a carefully selected Nepali organization serving at-risk youth
- Examine concepts of culture, service, race, privilege, and diversity through experiential activities, facilitated discussions, and guided self-reflections
- Earn three undergraduate credits for the Anthropology course "Cultural Competency and Service Learning in Nepal: Understanding the Customs and People of the Kathmandu Valley" (NOTE that this item is OPTIONAL, additional fee and academic work is required)

TIMELINE

Applications are due by September 30 at midnight EST.

Interviews with our selection committee will begin on October 10, 2021 and be completed by October 20, 2021. Parents\guardians will be required to meet with a member of the Selection Committee during the teen interview.

You will be notified of the Committee's decision by November 1, 2021.

If selected, a $1,875 deposit is due by November 20, 2021 to hold your place on the trip.
You must have a valid passport by January 1 to maintain your spot on the trip.

The full balance is due by January 1, 2022.

The trip will take place from April 1 to April 16, 2022.

Five mandatory pre trip meetings will take place in January, February, and March.
A mandatory post trip debrief meeting is set for April 23, 2022.

SPECIAL NOTE: We understand that planning for any travel at this time is challenging. In order to accommodate these concerns, we have modified the refund schedule for the Nepal 2022 trip and will be allowing full refunds up until January 1, and partial refunds until February 1. If you are interested in the 2022 Nepal trip but unsure at this time if you would attend if selected, please apply anyway and you can defer your final decision until the new year.

COSTS

Total cost for the trip is $3,750 per person. This includes round trip airfare, all transfers, lodging, meals, visa fees, local admissions, travel insurance, tour guide, classes, and lecturer fees. Financial assistance will be available, pending eligibility, and all teens selected to attend will have support in fundraising for the trip.

Funds for personal items, snacks, gifts, and souvenirs should be brought by each attendee.

COLLEGE CREDIT

We are offering college credits for this trip through the University of California at San Diego Extension. There is an additional cost of $455 for the three credits. The course associated with the trip is ANTH-90005 Cultural Competency and Service Learning in Nepal. This is a three credit undergraduate Anthropology course which you may be able to transfer to college of choice. Please note that like any other transfer credits, the decision to accept them or not resides with the institution you enroll at in the future. A syllabus is available upon request.
