In Normandy, France, a group of farmers, beekeepers and students are running a project on biodiversity to increase the presence of pollinators and other beneficial insects on farmland. They are testing landscape management techniques such as “Flower strips, honey-producing crops, cover crops and hedges on the edge of agricultural parcels” says Audrey Humel, project leader. Audrey’s project is one of the projects which will be visited at the AIS 2019. Between 300 and 400 farmers, researchers, advisers, companies, associations and decision-makers will meet in Normandy on 25 and 26 June 2019 for the second European Agri Innovation Summit 2019 (AIS 2019) dedicated to the contribution of EIP-AGRI to the transition to agroecology. Fertile Circularity Achterhoek project is all about “Improvement of soil fertility and quality of ground and surface water by reducing the leaching of phosphorus and nitrogen” says Carel de Vries, project leader. This Dutch project has developed an online tool which can be used to monitor the nutrient cycle of animal feed, soil and fertiliser. “We think that it can help resolve almost all environmental problems on dairy farms”. EIP-AGRI SERVICE POINT ACTIVITIES

This EIP-AGRI workshop was organised to highlight of the number of co-operation mechanisms and business models that have been developed to bring forward circular bio-economy projects and enterprises across the EU. The workshop took place in February in Vilnius, Lithuania, and was attended by over 90 participants. Read the final report.

Collecting and communicating about projects, their activities and results across Europe is much easier when they are all presented in the same way. The EIP-AGRI common format facilitates the sharing of knowledge from the start till the end of a project. On the EIP-AGRI website, you will find a specific format for Operational Groups and another for Horizon 2020 projects. The information is then all collected and shared on the EIP-AGRI database. On 11-12 April 2019, the European Network for Rural Development (ENRD) organised an interactive event to recognise the value of networking for rural development. Innovarurale, the Italian Portal of knowledge and innovation in the agricultural and food system, is now online. It publishes news, events, statistics and documents relating to policy in the fields of knowledge, research and innovation. It contains a database of EIP-AGRI Operational Groups from Italy and a catalogue of innovations applied to agriculture.

The European Diversity Cereal Festival, 26-28 June 2019, is organised within the framework of the Horizon 2020 thematic network CERERE. There are many different sessions to choose from, such as: cultivation, diseases and storage; grain and health, or; grain traditions and trends. Participants can also see a field collection of cereal varieties from all over Europe. Find out more.

During the 2014 to 2016 growing seasons, a severe decline of olive trees was observed in several orchards in Italy. Horizon 2020 project Ponte, carried out a number of tests and discovered that the plant disease Dactylonectria torresensis is causing foot and root rot of olive trees. Read on.

In March 2019, the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) organised a workshop called “Lessons learned and recommendations for developing clusters in the bioeconomy.” Over 80 experts, representatives of bioeconomy and policy-makers attended. The aim was to foster support for the bioeconomy, particularly from SMEs. The workshop report includes a summary of the main recommendations for developing clusters in the bioeconomy which came out of the event’s activities. Read the report.

On 9 April 2019, during the EU’s ‘Digital Day’, 24 EU members states signed a declaration on ‘A smart and sustainable digital future for European agriculture and rural areas’. It recognises the potential of digital technologies to help tackle important and urgent economic, social, climate and environmental challenges facing the EU's agri-food sector and rural areas. Save the date: European Research & Innovation Days
The European R&I Days, organised by the European Commission, are all about co-creation and stakeholder engagement to help build the strategic priorities for the EU’s next Framework Programme for R&I – Horizon Europe. This event will take place 24-26 September 2019 in Brussels. Look out for the exhibition section as well as the sessions on soil, agroecology and living labs, resources in agriculture and forestry and smart and circular rural areas. More information soon.

135 million Euros are available for projects on the bio-based economy in the current call from Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU). The aim of the BBI JU is to support a strong European bio-based industrial sector to reduce Europe’s dependency on fossil-based products. Topics include “Using tree species and/or varieties to create new bio-based value chains” and “Demonstrate bio-based pesticides […] for sustainable increase in agricultural productivity”, and many more. Call closes on 4 September 2019.
