Highest nonprofit exec earners make millions

The compensation of nonprofit executives once again comes under public scrutiny. The Dallas Morning News recently reported that nonprofit organizations dolled out millions to the area's highest paid executives. Although the news organization looked at nonprofits outside of healthcare, it notes that the many of the heavy hitters come from healthcare giants. For instance, many of the highest earners belonged to Baylor Health Care System or Texas Health Resources.

The highest earners didn't necessarily hold the chief executive positions; some high earners also came from other C-suite positions, as well as some physician roles. Among the list include the following healthcare executive compensations, based on 2009 numbers:

Regarding Texas Health Resources CEO Douglas Hawthorne's $5 million-plus compensation, a Texas Health spokesman said that compensation was higher than normal because of a one-time option to accelerate deferred pay, according to the article.

Meanwhile, the value of Tenet Healthcare Corp.'s chief executive Trevor Fetter's compensation rose 14 percent last year to $12.2 million because of stock awards, reports the Wall Street Journal.
