Welcome!

As an adult it can be difficult to find the right tap class for you.

This is why I have created PDX Tap Dance Classes!

Who is this site for?

This site is for any adult who would like to take a tap dance class of any level. Whether you are a beginner who doesn't know where to start, someone who needs help finding a class to fit into their schedule, or a dancer looking for something specific in a class, this site is for you!

How do I find a class?

Use the menu options at the top of the page to search for a class by schedule or by location. Once you have found a class you are interested in, click the studio name to be taken to their website. Always contact the studio directly before registering! Although I try my best to stay current, I cannot guarantee that my information is completely accurate at all times.

How much does each class cost?

Class cost is set by each studio. Some classes have a drop in rate for one class while some have a rate for a full season. Some studios offer multiple class discounts or discounted class cards. Because costs are always changing I do not include them here. Please contact each studio directly to inquire about costs.

What do the class levels mean?

Why isn't there an option to search by class level?

Class level is written exactly as provided by the studio. Class levels are subjective; there is no universal standard for class level. The best way to find the right level for you is to speak to the studio directly or to take the class yourself.

Generally speaking:
Absolute beginner = no previous tap experience required

Beginning = 1-2 years, familiar with basic concepts like flaps and shuffles

Intermediate = 2-4 years, familiar with combo steps like flap ball change and time steps
Advanced = 5+ years, familiar with complex steps and non traditional rhythms

Advanced professional = fast paced class with intricate steps, rhythms, and tricks

How can I report a new class or an error?

You can use the contact page to let me know about an error, update, or new class in the pdx area.

I'm a beginner. Where can I get tap shoes?

You can buy shoes locally from Dance Togs, Portland Dancewear, and The Leotard. Online you can buy from Capezio, Bloch, or Sansha.

Use the contact form if you would like a recommendation on what shoe to buy.

I'd like to tap at home. What should I dance on?

You can make your own tap board from laminate flooring or plywood glued to a foam mat. You can also buy a tap board from Jubilee Dance Floors, O'Mara Sprung Floors, Portable Tap Floor, Portable Dance Floors,

Stagestep Flooring Solutions, or SixToe Tap Boards.

Who created this page and why?

What's with the color scheme?

Hello! My name is Liz. I am a dancer and performer. I have been tap dancing for over 20 years. I created this site because over and over again I heard friends ask where they can take a tap class and I didn't know what to tell them. I created this site because when I looked for classes to take myself, I only found kids dance studios that really weren't meant for adults. I created this site because it is really difficult to try out different classes to find the right one and I wanted to make it easier. Ultimately I created this site because I LOVE TAP and I want to help other people experience it.

The color scheme is based off of the iconic historical carpet at the PDX airport. To me it symbolizes the Portland area, and the journeying you take as a dancer when you learn a new skill. I also think it is quirky and fun!
