Ruthie Jordan’s Letter to AG Bell Association

There is a little letter writing truth campaign going on to ring AG Bell Association’s bell and say “well hell, audism, Oralism, linguicism, phonocentrism, are not cool”

so what about you?  do you want to send a letter too?  Can be in ASL or an artwork or….   if you do and you’d like it shared here – send it along.  If u have done but prefer it not be here – no problem.

thank u very much to all who have sent them something so far – we thank u for doing the right, just, and good thing.

Ruthie Jordan – thank you forever STANDing for ASL, Deaf culture, bilingualism-biculturalism, and Deaf ethnicity.  You Rock!

NOTE: and folks dont worry about the NYT editorial pieces – the bias is obvious and we will let them know that too is not cool.  See Amy Cohen Efron’s important blog on this subject but read below first and if you havent done ur letter yet – pls do so even if it is just to say “howdy, we see u AG Bell and not cool”

Dear AGBAD,

In regards to your sending temporary memberships to teachers in Deaf programs, I would like to let you know that I am a D E A F professional and NOT A HEARING SPECIALIST. Do not ever send me any unwanted and insulting solicitation.  I do not support oppressive organizations and have no intention of becoming a member of an organization such as AG Bell which promotes Oralism, Linguicism and Audism.

George Veditz, a former NAD President, communicated to AG Bell and your Association that Oralism was a failure and you have been an “enemy” for over 130 years. Again, what you are doing – oralism – is an UNETHICAL AND UNSUCCESSFUL business.  Sending the temporary “Hearing Specialist” membership card to Deaf people is also disrespectful and abominable.  Oralism -“Listening and Speaking”- has made Deaf children suffer emotionally and spiritually. For many, they feel their soul has been taken away by those who work for AG Bell.

Thus, I would like to remind you again: I am a Deaf professional who uses sign language and I am a culturally Deaf human being.

Please do not send any unwanted and insulting solicitation!

Thank you,
Ruthie Jordan

  1. Wow. That is it!!! We gotta march to Dept of Education at Washington. I had enough of AGBell pull us down all over again and again. We need to get DOE the full attention and listen to DEAF professionals and educators what the best for Deaf children and TWO sides!

  2. Hedy – Audism Free America (AFA) did meet with several high ranking representatives of the Dept of Education (DoE). Will have a summary up of the meeting soon but definitely the stakeholders and byproducts of Deaf education really need to have more say in the state of education of Deaf children across the state and the nation. Thanks for all you are trying to do with VSD.

    peace,

this is a great letter by Ruthie and it was great of her to write and send it but one letter is not gonna convince AG Bell to cease and desist.

Hope you will put actions behind your words and send your own letter.

Every person and every peaceful act helps.

    Peace

    Patti
