It’s there; it protects you from the elements, but, it’s like any other unsung hero; largely unacknowledged and underappreciated. There are many different types of roofs and various materials that can be used in its construction and they can determine the aesthetics of your home. Asphalt Shingles
The most common roofing material used in the United States today is the asphalt shingle, also known as a composite shingle. They are easy to install and relatively inexpensive, especially in comparison to some other roofing options. You can choose to install them yourself or if you need to have the old roof removed, you may want to invest in having professionals do the job. The overall price tag will be contingent upon the size and shape of your home, so make sure to get several estimates first. Asphalt shingles come in two main varieties—the organic and the fiberglass. The organic type is constructed of paper and then coated with asphalt, making them waterproof. The fiberglass kind is a fiberglass product treated with a resin coating that makes it not only waterproof but more resistant to fire than the organic variety. In addition to their economic cost and ease of installment, asphalt shingles come in an array of colors and they last a relatively long time. Asphalt shingles have their drawbacks, too. They are not an environmentally friendly option since they are a petroleum product and they are subject to decay in sudden weather changes. In windy weather, the shingles can individually lift or fly off if the wind is strong enough, causing a breach of the roof’s integrity. Wood Shakes
Another option for your roof is wood shingles or wood shakes, which are very popular and aesthetically pleasing. Another plus: wood shingles actually improve air circulation throughout the entire home because they let the house “breathe”, without trapping moisture. The wood is resilient when faced with challenging weather like hurricanes and rainstorms and it holds up against insects. Wood shingles may not be in your budget; they are decidedly more expensive than asphalt shingles. Wood also requires regular maintenance because the material is susceptible to mold, fire, and rot. If your shingles experience rot, be prepared to replace the whole roof; depending upon how the roof was installed, it may be necessary to remove the entire structure. These types of shingles may not be a good investment if you live in a climate that is rainy and wet.
Tile Roof
Tile roofs have proven very popular, especially in the southwestern part of the U.S. where they are resistant to the heat. Tiles can be made with concrete or terracotta clay, come in several colors and possess properties that bode well for a roof: they resist water and rot, they repel insects, and they are fire resistant. Tile roofs are aesthetically attractive and do not require a lot of maintenance. The problem with tile roofs is if they are damaged, they expose the rooftop underneath to the elements. Tile roofs are also heavier than traditional roofs, so the home needs to be designed to support the extra weight. This type of roofing is also more expensive than various other roofing options.
Metal Roof Top
A different option is a metal roof, a durable, light-weight and fire resistant covering. You can opt for steel, aluminum or copper, but the costs will vary. A metal roof has an excellent life expectancy and resistant to fire, rot, mildew, and bugs. It’s also a great choice against water, wind, and snow and they are lighter and reflect heat well. If you opt for a metal roof, expect to spend more initially; you may make up the cost difference over the years of the roof. You can also expect some noise; a metal roof in a rain or hailstorm can be grating. You may also experience some denting in the roof, especially if you purchase an aluminum or copper roof since they are softer metals, although you may be able to get a warranty or guarantee from your roofer.
Slate Roof
A beautiful topping to your home might be a slate roof. In addition to coming in a number of colors and being an attractive, impressive option, a slate roof offers up to 150 years of longevity. Slate also provides fire protection because they are fireproof and environmentally friendly because it is replaced less often than other types of roofs. Be prepared for some hindrances with a new slate roof; it will set you back a pretty penny. Your initial investment may be up to five times the cost of other roofing materials, but in its defense, it will last you five times as long. Slate is also very heavy, so the home needs to be structurally designed to sustain the weight. And although slate lasts a long time, it is fragile, so walking on it takes a special touch. If a tile gets damaged, replacing it with a matching piece of slate might be a challenge since slate, like tile, comes in lots and they may not have the exact same coloring. Be aware, too, that the roofer specializes in installing slate roofs otherwise you may wind up with a roof with structural issues.
