Room 553

Rate this book
"She felt no remorse for drawing blood. In the context of their relationship, it had its place."

For Max and Laurel, nothing is off limits when they meet in room 553. Their illicit affair is exhilarating, passionate--and dangerous.

Driven as much by compulsion as pleasure, Max can't stop. His mistress is Jesus on the streets, and Satan in the sack. But when things take a sharp and sudden turn for the worse, he finds himself ensnared in a trap of his own making.

Under heavy scrutiny by the police and the media, Max is hailed as a cold and evasive womanizer. He made mistakes, to be sure. But does that make him a killer?

Unnerving and addictive, Room 553 is a vivid and sensual psychological thriller that weaves a story of cruelty, reckless desire, and blind, bloody justice.

Britney, Britney, Britney... You got me! Honestly, Room 553 is now tied with The Social Affair for my favorite BK novel. I don't want to say too much, but if you enjoy sexy, dark psychological thrillers containing many forms of neurodiversity and medical conditions in its cast, you'll want to pick this one up. Go in blind, folks!

*Many thanks to the author for providing my review copy.

There are several books by this author I loved.
Her last few psychological books I’ve enjoyed a lot.
I was looking forward to this one eagerly and loved the title and the cover.

I’d say this was erring on the side of suspense, seduction and mystery.

The last 20% when everything came together was brilliantly done.

It’s got that edge of Fifty shades of grey in it if you enjoy that. At some point I got a bit bored with those scenes and found myself skimming pages which is totally not my thing to do.

For me.....it just didn’t grab me as much as before.
It’s a cross between one of those sexy naughty romps and suspense.

Maybe just not for me. I was expecting more psychological thriller type vices.

Just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean you might not love it.

Room 553 is a psychological thriller and one of those enjoyable ones! I had to confess, I had tried two of this author's books and they were an okay read so it took me a bit too long to go for this one. It was a risk for me and I’m not a big fan of taking risks but I don’t know why; maybe the short chapters or being a fast-paced made me read it chapter to chapter to… till to the very end! And let me tell you I couldn’t guess any of the twists (almost), I couldn’t even guess who is the victim and who is the perp! Told in dual POV 1st person, it’s a standalone novel. I liked the writing, it was compelling. One of the POVs was through an investigation and another one was through a journal. If you’re a fan of these type of writing… It was a bit dark with a satisfying ending. All in all, loved it and hope you enjoy it as well!

WOW... there is something so dark and addicting to Britney King's writing.

Let me tell you... if you like dark, addicting, disturbing, and binge-worthy up all night reads than come on down folks this is for you!!

Oh my gosh... this story of Max, Laurel and room 553 takes off like lightning. Things take an unexpected turn when a body is found in the hotel room 553 and our narratives switch to after the incident occurred.

Take a turn here my friends and I DARE you to predict what is behind these pages. Go ahead... you know you want to. After I turned that final page... I was COMPLETELY thrown for a loop. King NEVER disappoints and let me tell you... you WILL NOT see this coming. It's my joy and pleasure to see what dark and disturbing things she has up her sleeves.

I am FIRST in line for her next book and it's been an absolute mind- dropping ride to read Room 553. I can't decide if this is my favorite yet of hers but just don't miss this one.

4.5 stars!!

Thank you so much to Britney King for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

Favorite Quotes:

There are a lot of things a woman permits a man to be. Indifferent is not one of them.

The read I get on Dr. Jones is that she’s the type who has ten cats and piles of clutter spread among the excess of belongings she refuses to get rid of.

My words tasted bitter and foreign, like they were coming from someone else’s mouth, someone I didn’t yet know.

My heart leaped so high into my throat that I could have easily opened my mouth and touched it.

My Review:

There is no doubt; Britney King is an evil genius. I’ll just keep my fingers crossed that she limits her substantial talents and devious powers to continue to delight and entertain rather than hiring out for actual crime. The cunning characters in Room 553 were markedly vile yet fatally alluring and intriguing, but as brilliantly devised as they were, it was her unique and clever writing style that ultimately wins the purple championship ribbon. Her well-crafted storylines were magnetic and unflinchingly compelling and quickly lured me into a consuming vortex that had me simultaneously smirking and cringing. I greatly admire her mad skills and covet all her clever arrangements of words. I fear I am irrevocably addicted and have unwittingly consumed her Kool-aid.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

Britney King is a master of compulsive, highly-readable thrillers that you can read in one sitting, and Room 553: A Psychological Thriller was not an exception.

What it's about: Max and Laurel are having an affair, one that mostly takes place in room 553 of the Belmond. Anything goes while they are together, and neither of them seem to be able to stop the affair. But what happens when it goes too far? Suddenly Max is in jail and being tried for murder but is he really a killer?

I think I just wrote the shortest summery for a book ever, but I think it is very beneficial to go into Room 553 mostly blind. I didn't even have to read the book's synopsis to know I wanted to read it. I will read anything that King writes, no questions asked. So if you are a Britney King fan you are going to have to pick this up. And if you haven't read a book by her yet (what!?) this might be a good one to start with. Even though it's not her first book, it is a standalone and I think it really shows what her writing is like.

I actually found this book to be a bit slower than her other books, even though I still read it incredibly quickly - it took me a whole 2 hours and 23 minutes! - but for some reason it just felt a bit slower. This is not to say that there isn't a lot going on, because there is, there was just something about it that made it feel slower to me. Maybe this is all in my head, but I really enjoyed savoring it while still flying through it.

Super quick chapters, devious characters, and so many secrets makes Room 553 the epitome of psychological thrillers, and I didn't see any of the turns coming. While I still think Her was King's best book so far, this one is solid and definitely worth the read.

Song/s the book brought to mind: I Wanna Be Bad by Willa Ford

Final Thought: I really don't want to give anything away, so I won't say anything else about this book other than you should totally read it. :)

Thank you to the author, Britney King, for providing me with an advance review copy of this book!

description Yoowza...I think this is my favorite book by this author to date. It was SOOOO good. However, another thing about this author's books is that they are notoriously hard to review. (lol) I can't really say too much about the plot because anything I say is a potential spoiler. Suffice it to say this isn't a book you want to miss. It is a twisty, well written, and intriguing phycological thriller whose plot is methodically peeled away layer by layer until you reach its rotten and shocking inner core.

One-click this baby today...you won't be disappointed!

Wow! I don't even know how to begin writing a review on this crazy messed up story! Not one crazy person, but three crazy ass people! This is a psychological thriller based upon a murder. We have Max who is accused of the murder. Then there's Laurel, the sex addict wife of a sick psycho man named James. Both of them are beyond crazy! I read this book in one day because I just had to know how this all played out! Kudos to the author for creating this edge of your seat intense story!

Bring on the illicit, the deviant, the sociopathic, the manipulative, and the guilty, because honey, ain't nobody innocent in this book. Britney has done it yet AGAIN. Where does King's mind live and can I please visit for an extended period of time?

When it comes to matters of the heart, there very rarely is a winner when your heart (or your loins) belongs to someone that's not your spouse. Let's take it next level with Max and Laurel. The games have begun.

I will say that this one started a bit slower than other books I've read by this author. The back and forth from present to past, the different voices (that all felt slightly similar) had me scratching my head on where this could be going. And then SNAP, it all hit me and I was like ok, ok, ok... here we are - in true Britney, twisty, style and I LOVE IT. HI Max, Hi Lauren. **waves** I definitely could feel her bringing in her sexier vibes from past books, such as Bedrock, and adding it to the psychological thrillers she's more well known for throughout Bookstagram. This meld just might be a favorite of mine.

Let's not say too much more - just know this is yet another book by her that I highly recommend, "Promise." **wink**

Britney King is a master at writing satirical, shocking, and twisted reads. Room 553 is a testament to that and I think many readers are going to devour this crazy ride! I had many ideas as to what was happening in the story (readers don't really know what's happening until the brutal end) but found myself shocked even everything was revealed. I wasn't expecting that are common phrases I had in my head throughout the whole story! Based on all this, I think many readers are going to really enjoy Room 553 and I recommend giving it a try!

I won't speak of the plot at all because this is the type of book where the buildup and the unknown are paramount to the story. I will say that readers should be aware that while the story may start a little slow it picks up quickly. You will have so many questions and they WILL be revealed it just takes a little time. It's one of those books where slower pace is necessary for the shocks!

I have been reading Britney King for the past few years and she always manages to disturb me with her books. Where she gets her ideas is beyond me but each and every novel is original and twisty! I love them!!! Therefore, I recommend this book to fans of psychological thrillers!

4.5 STARS 🌟 Wow am I glad to have picked this one up because it was SO good! I have never read any of Britney King’s previous works before, but I think she just became a new auto-buy author of mine. I immediately fell in love with her writing style and how gripping the story was right from the beginning. I normally am more of a skimmer when it comes to reading, but I enjoyed the writing so much that I wanted to read every single word. ⁣

This book was super twisty and thrilling to say the least, but the main aspect of this book that I loved the most was the incorporation of Laurel’s journal entries. I felt like they tied the alternating perspectives together perfectly and ultimately helped build the suspense throughout the story. ⁣

The only minor issue I had with this book was the pacing, which is why I couldn’t give this a full five stars. I felt like the ending was a bit rushed compared to how detailed the build up was, but other than that it was a fantastic read and I would highly recommend it! ⁣

"I realized then how close fear and desire live, and how nice of is when you have a little of both."

Room 553 is my third Britney King book, and I loved it so much! This one was recommended by my friend Janelle, and I'm so glad that I grabbed a copy. I'm not going to say much about this book because you deserve to go in without any background, but just know that I had a lot of fun reading this psychological thriller. This book went in a different direction than I was expecting, and it was such an enjoyable read.

Like a can of pringles…once you pop it open, you CAN’T stop!!

Britney King is my go-to author for a binge worthy read. She manages to come up with refreshingly original, juicy and devilishly twisted stories. I just love the way her dark messed up mind works and cannot get enough of her books. Room 553 did not disappoint and seriously without a doubt think this is her best yet! I know, I know I say that every time I read one of her books. It really just goes to show that King is a talent that is here to stay. She’s continuing to craft her writing skills and bringing us stories that surprise us in the best ways.

The story takes off at warp speed as we are introduced to Max and Laurel, two lovers where nothing is off limits in Room 553. Things take a turn when a body is found and the narrative switches to after the incident. We get to know Max through his discussions with Dr. Jones and Laurel through her journal entries. What follows is something that I beg you to predict. King managed to deceive me until the very last page.

Warning: Highly addictive and may cause you to avoid all responsibilities. Make sure small children are fed and attended to.

This is available now so go grab your copy ASAP so we can chat.

2/5- I didn’t like it but you may? I was really excited for this book but it didn’t mess me up like psychological thrillers usually do when I read them.

Look, the prologue and epilogue were the best parts of the book. The in between was rather dull. A lot of talking, A LOT.

This is not 50 shades meets whatever the fuck. This is a book about an abused wife (mentally, physically, emotionally) that has an affair with a sexually starved guy and they both like rough (non-explicit) sex. This guy is the the chick’s dad’s (he’s 80 with dementia) doctor. They meet in room 553 and have all kinds of sex for a couple of months. She gets attached. He goes to prison.

Why does she get attached? For starters she had a shitty childhood, her mom tried to kill her. And, she has a husband that’s a wannabe kinkster and he pushes her to hang out with his other wannabe kinkster friends to play or rather be “heavily dominated” but sex is frowned upon because bad taste? YKINMKBYKIOK...

Like I said the middle is just talking. Her journal entries and his interview process with the shrink in prison because he’s incarcerated for “killing” her elderly father... it was her idea.

The prologue starts with a body found in room 553 and the epilogue confirms everything.

There are a lot of chapters but they are super short. This would indicate the pace of the book as fast but I was bored.

There’s lots of talking about sex and vague sexual situations. Nothing explicit.

That’s the thing nothing is explicit except the prologue - discovery of the body, and, the epilogue where everything thing is brought to light.

I read and really enjoyed Her by King, so knew I had to read this one.

This was dark, twisted and I just could not put it down!

Max and Laurel are having an affair and they engage in illicit and dangerous activities. The story takes a turn when a body is found in a room and Max is under scrutiny for what role he may have played in the death. It is impossible to say more without revealing the plot. But I can say it was quite provocative and disturbing throughout and such an addictive read. I had no idea where the story was headed and that is my very favourite kind. Brilliant.

Whew.... what a twist that was!!!

I loved how Britney King has one character speaking in the present and one speaking in the past. As the two catch up to each, that’s when the twists unfold!

This book had me intrigued from beginning til the end. Some things I was able to predict, but others I had no idea!

The Epilogue, is.... Epic 🤭

Thank you to the author for the advance copy of Room 553 as well as the signed copy! All opinions are my own.

If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers and you haven’t already checked out one of Britney King’s novels, you’re not doing it right.

She’s done it again folks, and it may be her best one yet! Room 553 is now tied for my favorite of hers along with The Replacement Wife. The Replacement Wife can be read as a stand alone, although I recommend you read the entire New Hope Church series to really appreciate King’s brilliance. So if you don’t want to commit to a trilogy, then Room 553 is the book for you! It’s less than 250 pages, which makes for a fast read, but it also packs a major punch.

I’m not a huge fan of reading on my iPad, but I started reading the digital copy and flew right through it because I had to know what happened. It’s got multiple perspectives, one of which includes journal entries, which is always a major win for me. She also piled on the twists, none of which I saw coming.

I don’t want to say too much for fear of giving anything away, but if you’ve been meaning to pick up one of Britney King’s books, make it this one! And what’s better than supporting an independent author?

Ahh, Britney, you’ve done it again! I flew through ROOM 553 in a day because I couldn’t get enough of the dysfunctional story and even more dysfunctional characters! The story is full of twists and turns that I never expected. The characters are truly loathsome which is perfect for this wild psychological thriller. My eyebrows raised numerous times and I even chuckled at the crazy actions taken.

The story is told from alternative narrators and a day timeline. In the “after” timeline, you’re dropped into the middle of an intense situation where clues are dropped like breadcrumbs so the reader really has to work to figure out what’s going on. I really enjoyed this. It’s the absolute best when a psychological thriller keeps me on the edge of my seat until the very end.

Needless to say, I didn’t want to check out of ROOM 553 and I don’t think you will either! If you love twisty, slightly disturbing psychological thrillers, check this one out now!

My first read by this author was Bedrock over five years ago. That book will stay with me forever. It was that kinda book. To be honest I didn’t think the author could blow my mind like she did with Bedrock but on each new release she blows my mind again. This is no different as it’s a superb read.

As with previous books by this author I’m struggling to review as I do believe you need to jump in blind. Trust the author as I’m sure she will mess with ur head like she did with mine.

This author has a unique talent of her own. She’s in a league of her own. Room 553 is a fantastic psychological thriller that in all honestly had me gripped from start to finish.

Hands down - my favorite psychological thriller of 2019 thus far. This book solidified that I will follow Britney King anywhere. Thriller/suspense fans - If you haven’t read a Britney King yet, I don’t know what you’re doing with your lives. After reading HER this year, I couldn’t wait to get my eyes on her latest & greatest. The prologue is one of my favorites in recent memory - I giggled & raised my eyebrows in awe, excited to begin. Britney King’s WTF thrillers pull you in quickly & don’t let go, up until the last page.

Yes perhaps her novels are guilty pleasure reads but they are a blast to read, not to mention that this one is oh so HOT too.
My love of alternative narration, along with a dual time line had me in love & I didn’t want to check out of Room 553. It’s a fast-paced & fun twisty ride (less than 300 pages) to definitely check in to if you dare!! I highly recommend jumping into this one blind.

October is here and I’m ready for the spooky and creepy books!!! Room 553 by Britney King came highly recommended from the bookstagram community. I had seen so many amazing reviews for this author that I had to check her out. ⁣

Room 553 starts off with a maid finding a dead body, which at that time we are not told who it is. We then get alternating perspectives from two people involved in a love affair. Max’s perspective is told in after the murder and Laurel’s is told in a journal entry format. ⁣

❤️Review❤️⁣

This books is a short book and comes in at only 221 pages. For a short book I expected things to feel rushed or for amazing pacing with the twists and turns. We did get twists and turns right at the end, but it felt like a long time getting there. The first few chapters really gripped me and then I began to lose steam. I felt like there wasn’t necessarily anything I disliked about the story, but nothing good was happening either. Unfortunately due to the dip in pacing by time the twists did come I found myself not caring. For a book that I thought was going to have so much potential it just left me feeling meh.⁣

I may try this author again because like I said so many of you love her. If you love her books, let me know which book you would recommend I try next!⁣

BRILLIANT
Page turning head turner. This brilliantly written read keeps you on your toes hyper alert at one heck of a guessing game that when you least expect it it totally goes array shocking and twisting every thought you had out of your mind. I love Britney's writing and her crazy twists that makes me wonder how the heck she comes up with some of this stuff and then to develop into words for this amazing thriller. A wickedly written thriller I would gladly recommend.

I read the Foreword to Room 553 by Britney King and laughed out loud thinking, right Britney. Now you know I have to continue reading! OMG!

I didn’t see the direction this was going when I began. In fact, I was a bit disappointed because Britney King writes some fabulous stories and I am usually biting my nails and racing through the pages as soon as I begin. Not so with this psychological thriller. It is more subtle, slowly sucking me in, revealing the characters in starts and stops.

The story bounces between Max’s perspective and Laurel’s journal writings.

The characters, at first I didn’t think much of any of them, but as more of their personalities, sick, perverted personalities, were revealed, I began to think, there isn’t one of them worth redemption. Maybe they will all get what’s coming to them.

Room 553 gets deeper into their twisted world becoming darker, uglier more depraved as the threads are woven together to create surprises and turns that gave me a steady supply of WTFs. That ending…worth a star in itself! Love that Britney King can blow my mind making me think of the book long after I have finished reading it.

Even though I thought Room 553 was too tame for me in the beginning, the little nuggets of goodies started popping up…then, full on, psychological and psychopathic profiles were exposed and I was in my element. But, don’t judge me on my love of reading materials.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Room 553 by Britney King.

“It’s all about perception, and you have to be careful. Perception can be wrong.”

“I would tell him the truth. Which version of it, well, it depends on how you look at it. After all, what is truth but perception”

The above quotes from Britney King’s brilliant new novel, Room 553, distill the essence of this masterful story of deceit and deception that Ms. King weaves with her adroit and unparalleled wordsmith skills.

The male protagonist is Dr. Max Hastings. Max is the handsome physician of Laurel’s demented and dying father. Max is in a failing marriage and has a reputation for occasional dalliances with other women. Max, as described by Ms. King in her Forward, is a highly educated, very stupid man. Max falls prey to his testosterone-driven ego and makes the all too typical male mistake of under-estimating a beautiful woman. A mistake that irreparably alters his life.

The beautiful and sensual female protagonist, Laurel Dunaway, is also married but her marriage is everything but traditional. Laurel has so many skeletons in her mental closet that the skeletons have overflowed the closet and now occupy a full room of their own in her mind. Laurel is an intelligent and creative woman with many talents, not the least of which is that she is insatiable in the bedroom.

In their preferred location for their assignations, Room 553 of the Belmond Hotel, the sex was always unrestrained and feral. Always anything goes. No safe words were required because nothing was off limits. Hair pulling. Biting, Clawing. Slapping. Grasping. Drawing blood. Private unrestrained lust at its rawest.

Room 553 is written in Britney King’s typical style of alternating the telling of the story in the voices her two protagonists, Max and Laurel. Laurel’s story is told through entries in her journal. Max’s story is told through his interviews with a psychiatrist in prison. Ms. King is yet again masterful in her slowly paced but richly told development of her characters and in each chapter revealing key elements of their backstories. Ms. King carefully and skillfully entices the reader to think and to examine the true nature of her two protagonist and the reality and truth of the story that she is telling.

The plot likewise develops slowly and logically. Other than the deaths that pile up along the way, it is a totally believable story of infidelity and the complications that can result when two individuals in failing marriages scratch a mutually felt itch. In the words of Max, “to me sex is sex. I didn’t ask – and she didn’t tell”.
It is also a cautionary tale of the unintended consequences of lies and deceptions. In the words of Laurel, this is the thing about lies; you start with one and it cascades from there. However, alternatively, in the words of Max, to tell the truth, in some cases, is a dangerous thing to do.

Initially, the story seems simple and straight-forward and the reader thinks that she/he has it figured out. Then the pace quickens and new and totally unexpected revelations makes the reader’s head spin. I can assure you that I didn’t see several of the coming’s that lay ahead for you! Britney King’s storytelling, pacing and her lesson to the reader is analogous to the way that Laurel describes Max’s lovemaking following their first time together. “You don’t get to be in charge here” - he told me as he entered me – slowly at first, and then not slowly at all.” This brilliant story also moves slowly at first, and then not slowly at all. And, Britney King is totally in charge. Like a skilled puppet-mistress, Ms. King knows how to pull your strings!

I, like Max, am a highly educated but very stupid man and I too have made an underestimation. In my reviews of Britney King’s previous two novels, I stated that, first Speak of the Devil and most recently HER were her best books ever. My preconception before reading Room 553 was that while it would no doubt be an excellent book, it would be unrealistic and unfair to expect it to be better. Yet again, Britney King has proved me wrong. Room 553 is her best work yet. She is setting a high standard for whatever book is no doubt already gestating in her fertile and creative mind. Please read this 5+ star psychological thriller. It will be one of, if not the, best book that you read this year.

I received an uncorrected advanced reading copy (ARC) directly from the author in return for an honest review. My review is provided voluntarily.

In the last book I read by this author she left me wanting more. Well the more has come and I found it very interesting. The first interesting thing was the Foreword. It certainly isn’t one you would expect but I’ve learned that about this author. Maybe that’s one reason that I keep coming back for more.

Max Hastings is a man who constantly thinks. At first introduction he gives a household tip – will have to check it out. He also reveals the significance of the title. In his next scene he did something that totally grossed me out – you may not feel the same. But when you think of his profession it just doesn’t seem something anyone else would do. It’s just a part of who he is.

Laurel Dunaway is honest about things in her life – at least on paper. She writes down what she’s willing to share but you have to wonder what she’s hiding. I think you’ll figure out early on the type of man her husband James is. It does make you wonder how they ever became a couple.

If you haven’t read this author before you’ll quickly realize why she’s good at the psychological thriller. She’s very good at engaging the reader’s mind. She’s also good at creating puzzles that she slowly unravels. In this instance, Laurel will give a helping hand. Sometimes one question gets answered and then another appears. Max is the one that reminds me why I’m terrible when it comes to mysteries.

That becomes a good reason to keep reading. If I were to figure things out before the end I might give up. But having Max and Laurel as our main characters makes it easy to continue turning the pages. Our author was also very good with her secondary characters even though at times they may not have seemed that way. There were several times where I just had to roll my eyes. One of those times when Max’s wife Nina seemed to be in a real snit. Another time was when she gave attitude about her daughter. Then came a scene when she was talking to her husband and I just couldn’t help myself. But there came a time where I decided was going to have to be careful – my eyes will stay that way. If I didn’t have enough of an issue with Nina, then it starts again with Laurel’s husband. He seems to have an issue with compassion.

It wasn’t just the characters that kept my attention but the way the author wrote her story. We get to see Max’s take on what went on. Laurel doesn’t talk to the reader directly but we still get to understand her by what she reveals and by what she doesn’t. Max is the one to give us an ending but not really. He put the period on things but since life goes on maybe it’s just a comma.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Britney has done it again only even better which is an amazing achievement when you look at what she has already achieved, some writers are gifted and a joy to read but I believe that Room 553 is a step or two higher than that
From the Prologue you sense that this is a thriller you can't put down and then you get to hear of Max and Laurel and there unrestricted affair and the no rules what happens in Room 553 stays in there. Welll if that was possible it would but if you draw blood then you have to explain that to your spouse or keep it well hidden if that was, well I let you read and find out for yourself.
What has Max done or is this did he the answer may change but the truth is a spectacular thriller with turns which you will not see coming.
I would generally give it more stars if it's possible because this is one of the best twisting thriller that you are going to a set eyes on probably until Britney releases her next book, but don't just take my word for it read it I don't think you will be disappointed.

I think you will love it, did I mention I did, love this thriller that is
