Spanish language radio personalities, NAACP plan Saturday morning rally against Alabama immigration law

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Personalities from a Spanish language radio station who have been walking across the state in opposition to the state's immigration law will host a rally Saturday morning in downtown Birmingham.

Jose Antonio Castro, program director for La Jefa, and radio personality Orlando Rosa today finished the fifth day of their 14-day, 14-city walk. The two started the walk in Huntsville on Tuesday and broadcast from Gardendale after finishing today's walk.

The two will join leaders from the NAACP at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery, 1120 19th St. N., to place flowers on the grave of the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. From there, they will march to Kelly Ingram Park where the rally will be held. The rally will be followed by a live broadcast at 2 p.m.

The two are walking six hours each day conducting interviews and ending each day with a three-hour live broadcast.

"People are just asking to live their lives in peace; they don't want to live in fear. They are living in an environment of unnecessary stress where children cry whenever they see police officers, fearful that the cops are out to arrest and deport their parents," Castro said.

On Sunday, the walk will continue to Tuscaloosa. Future stops include Centreville, Clanton, Selma, Prattville, and Wetumpka.

The walk will end Nov. 19 in Montgomery with a rally and live broadcast.

La Jefa broadcasts on three AM stations -- WQCR 1500 in Alabaster, 1450 WZGX in Bessemer, WJHX 620 in Lexington -- and online at aquimandalajefa.com.
