My Alton Towers Top 10

14 Aug

This weekend two of my brothers and I took a trip to Alton Towers for one of their birthdays. I’ve always loved thrill rides ever since I was a young kid, with many sticking with me, ranging from the ‘Drop of Doom’ that could be found in the West Edmonton mall until early noughties to the ‘Jurassic Park’ ride at universal studies (arguably one of my favorites to date!)

Having not been to Alton Towers for over three years I was pleasantly surprised to find a few new surprises along with some of the old classics. The park is clearly constantly pushing the boundaries moving into an area of rides that combine a touch of the Disney showmanship with pure fear, thrill and fun, a winning combination in my book.

Looking back I can separate my favorite rides in the park by a great deal, but a few will stick with me for one reason or another, and until I can get back to Universal studios to get chased by velociraptors and sharks this will do nicely.

10. The Flume

Tenth in the list, but don’t let you fool you this is very much an enjoyable ride on the day. The problem is this is in the same category as arguably my favorite ride to date, and many ‘boat’ rides have some kind of show to them. This is a simple glide through the rides bare bones in the forest. We came, we saw, we got wet and we moved on.

9. Runaway Mine Train

Some form of ‘mine train’ ride can be found in most theme parks, and they are often the first taste of rollercoaster’s that children get. Sharp turns laced with speed offer a great ride, but few thrills.

8. Congo River Rapids

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone ride one these alone, and why would you?! The best part of these is the laughs the group gets as they see members get splashed. Sometimes they are to slow, but on the day this river was flowing at great pace and we argued about who got wettest afterwards!

7. Sonic Spinball

This was the first time I went on this ride and I loved it! It’s themed perfectly and really gives you a sense of what it ‘could’ feel like to be in a sonic game. If only they let us collect some gold rings!

6. Air

This is one of the most unique ride experiences available, as you are held vertically facing the ground while riding. This is meant to create the illusion of flight, and looking at the pictures afterwards 80% of riders pull a superhero pose. I like this ride, however I went on it twice, each after having something to eat. This is a bad idea considering I was lying on my stomach during this ride!

5. Rita

I wouldn’t honestly say there is much to separate Rita and Air, what edged it however was speed. This ride is fast, so very fast, and it doesn’t even use a drop to get going. There’s a bit of a queue to get on, but if you visit and don’t go on this ride than you’re obviously missing a trick.

4. Oblivion

Anyone who knows me will be well aware of the fact that I’m not a fan of heights and hate the feeling of falling. Yet I always go back to rides that drop me from a ridiculous height. This is one hell of a rush, and the turn around time means the time in line often isn’t very long. On a side note I recommend standing next to the tunnel and watching riders go down, the movement of the mist looks amazing!

3. Nemesis Sub-Terra

This ride is like nothing I have ever experienced in any theme park before, with the exception of Universal Studios. If you asked me yesterday I would have ranked it lower, but on reflection I was hard pressed not to rank it top. Without giving much away, this ride scared the shit out of me. In fact after beta tests feedback called for the BBFC to come in and make a rating for the ride, a first for any theme park in history. To say don’t ride this if you have a nervous disposition would be an understatement. Punters were literally pushing each other to leave when it was done, with screams of terror filling the room. Nemesis Sub-Terra surprised and surpassed my expectations. I only rode it once on the day and I will probably only ride it once on my next visit, because that’s all a person could arguable handle!

**WARNING – Video may contain spoilers**

=1.Nemesis & Th13teen

I believe these are the two biggest roller coasters in the park and I couldn’t choose between them. They only just edged out Nemesis Sub-Terra as I love a good roller coaster!

Nemesis

This is the big one, the one that park goers will do their utmost to ensure they get on during their visit ever since opening in 1994. With big drops and loops that go above and below ground it has me coming back for more every time. I went on 3 times during my visit; making this the one I rode more than any other.

Th13teen

I believe this ride had opened since I had last been to Alton Towers. I hadn’t heard much of it, and didn’t expect much, which made for even more of a surprise when riding it! The initial drop is so much steeper than it appears from the sidelines, and the inclusion showmanship with the track drop was superb! On the day I said this was my number 1, but on reflection I can’t separate it from Nemesis.

So there you have it my 10 ten rides at Alton Towers, I’ll be pushing the for a trip back to Universal soon though to get beck on some of my favorites, but until then I think I’ll look to take my first trip to Thorpe Park in the near future to see how they compare!

What are your favorite rides? Let me know!

Some of My Favorite Movie ‘Bad Guys’

24 Jul

Last Friday night I went to see; ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, which to say the least was a fantastic film, and has definitely rounded off my favorite film trilogy of all time. What particularly caught my imagination was the villain used in the film, who really stole the show. This got me thinking about some of my favorite villains & bad guys from the big screen. Although there are many that could be picked, spending some time watching movies and browsing IMDB, I could probably come up with a more comprehensive list, I wanted to really pull these off the top of my head to see what I could come up with and what they’ve meant to me.

In no particular order:

The Terminator – Terminator

Probably one of the earliest, and scariest, bad guys I can think of. Who would want to come up against an unstoppable killing machine?!

The Terminator – Movie Poster

The Joker – The Dark Knight

I’ve always been intrigued by The Joker ever since I started getting into Batman as a child. However I don’t think there are as many as chilling and mystifying as the one portrayed in The Dark Knight; “Some men just love to see the world burn” – the scariest crimes are the ones without motive.

The Predator – Predator

Its armed, its invisible and its hunting you. Only Arnie can save our lives!

Predator – hunting humans since 1987

Jaws – The Jaws Films

I cannot even let my feet touch the floor when watching this film! The first time I saw the Jaws film I was off to a water sports day at the lake the next morning. I went boogie boarding, in fear, I tried to water ski, in fear, I went on a banana boat, and refused to sit at the back…because of fear. Don’t even get me started about when I got caught in the seaweed!

Jaws

Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting – Gangs of New York

They don’t call him the butcher because he cuts up animals for a living…well he does, and they do…but he will also stab you if you cross him.

Scar – The Lion King

This guy literally killed his own brother and blamed his nephew just to become king. If that’s not evil I don’t know what is. Also surely being the Kings younger brother gives you all the benefits without the work, he obviously didn’t think that through…we all saw what happened to the land when he took over. Lazy S.O.B.

Scar – one bad cat

Velociraptor – Jurassic Park

Clever girl…

Apollo Creed – Rocky

Probably the least ‘bad guy’ on the list, but at the end of the day I was cheering for Rocky!

Apollo Creed – he’s living in America

Blair Witch – The Blair Witch Project

I don’t care what anyone says, I watched this film on my own, in the dark, for the first time, and refused to walk up to my room to go bed. Simply…this film scared me shitless. To anyone who didn’t agree and needs the gore of a film like ‘Saw’ to be scared, all I say is: You need a better imagination!

Blair Witch Project

Bane – The Dark Knight Rises

This character is truly terrifying. Take the cool, calm collected nature of a master criminal and mix with the stature and unstoppable power of the largest grunt and you get Bane. He will break you.

Bane – Warner Bros. Pictures

16 Jul

The other night on the way home from a meal with my other half  (Lucy), we were digging through the CD’s in my car to find something we haven’t listened to in a while. Recently I have been on a trip of Radiohead and the Vaccines with the occasional breaks to listen to Talksport to keep up with the football news.

While rummaging around we came across an album that I hold in the highest regard but have not listened to in long time, in fact I was surprised it was even in my car! The album I am referring to is ‘Well Well Well’ by Milburn. Although I’ve never thought of Milburn as my favorite band, I think this is one of the strongest modern day albums I have owned or listened too (since digging it up I have listened to it at least 6 times over!)

Milburn – Well Well Well

Rediscovering and listening to this album, that I not only think so highly of but was the exact CD that saw me through so many late nights bashing out essays and websites at university, seemed to have a rather profound effect on me. I got home and I felt really inspired to pick up my guitar, and instead of the planned activity of films and Singstar Lucy and me had planned, I played for hours until we decided to go to bed.

First I learned two of my favorite songs from the album and played a few other known favorites. Then I started running through a ‘set-list’ of my own songs. I regularly write songs and have a book that is starting to fill up with ideas, chords and lyrics. They are not by any means masterpieces, however there are a few that I have worked for months on and I am particularly proud of and others that hold meaning in one way or another.

The famous songbook…and a boxing duck!

There was one outcome from this spat of inspiration that I feel was particularly interesting and I don’t believe it would have happened otherwise. After playing for about 90 minutes I was flicking through my book of songs and started playing one I wrote 6-9 months ago, but was never quite pleased with. I started to play, and with the spontaneous tweaking of a simple chord and a slight change of tempo I discovered something I hadn’t noticed before, even though it was always written in front of me. Shortly after Lucy came in the room and said; “who sings that?!”. This is always the sign I know I am on to something good.

I’m interested what inspires others; does a budding filmmaker come home from the cinema and plan their latest project? Does the aspiring author finish their latest read and pick up the pencil (or keyboard!) and get started on their own master piece?

Comment and let me know what inspires you!

If I was Liverpool manager…

12 Jul

Now we all know Liverpool underperformed a great deal last season, especially at home. However this season I can’t see any way in which they can continue to hit the post and draw games. By simply turning those Anfield draws into wins we could easily see the team move back into the top four.

Last season saw a great deal of change, and although there are critics, I believe the players we have will only improve. This especially means the likes of Jordan Henderson & Andy Carroll (If we can keep hold of him, but that’s a different issue all together!). I would suggest that LFC should improve them by signing four players in three key areas;

  • Striker x1
  • Winger x2
  • Defensive Mid x1

Additionally I would possibly look at left back however I feel with Robinson coming along and players such as Johnson capable of filling in it’s not necessary.

Strikers

Two established strikers is not enough, throw Pacheco into the mix and one more may be all we need.

Clint Dempsey
2011-2012 / 46 apps / 23 goals
I would pay – £6-£10 million (Age would dictate no more than £10 million in my opinion)

I remember watching Dempsey play for New England back in 2006, heading to the pub and saying this guy should be in the premier league. Low and behold Fulham came knocking within a few months of this claim. An established premier league forward / attacking midfielder averaged a goal every two games last season. He could be just the cost effect option to help Liverpool hit the ground running!

Wingers

With Kuyt having left, I’m pretty sure Maxi can’t be far away from doing the same we are ludicrously short on the wing. Although I would say this has been our bogey position for many years now!

Ibrahim Afellay
2011-2012 / 5 apps
I would pay – £6-£15 million (I would go in low but not stop there)

The 26 year old is a fantastic footballing talent who was very unfortunate to spend the majority of last season out injured. However despite the lack of match practice he went straight into the Dutch team and was arguably one of the very few shining stars in a lacklustre squad. The lad has a great touch, can go around a player and cross and is more than capable of cutting in and having a pop at goal. With Liverpool’s lack of wingers, I would argue he would get straight into the team and I imagine Barcelona would let him go at a reasonable price too.

Theo Walcott
2011-2012 / 43 apps / 11 goals / 13 assists
I would pay – £14-£18 million

Having been around so long its easy to forget that Walcott is only 23 years old and it will surprise many that I’ve included him in my list.  With the ongoing issues at Arsenal on the whole and speculation growing about Walcott’s future I would say he could potentially make a great signing to help us back into the top four. I personally prefer him through the middle up top as I think he has a great finish, but he can add anywhere on the top line. I also believe Rodgers could be the perfect manager to take him to the next level assisting both Liverpool and England along the way.

Defensive Midfield

The turning point for me last season was the injury to Lucas, a player developing easily into one of the top talents at Liverpool. Although I love homegrown talent I would say Spearing simply isn’t good enough to fill in. Although he has many critics over his delivery you simply cannot argue with his statistics last season, with only RVP beating him to top scorer for the Gunners.

Xabi Alonso
2011 – 2012 / 52 apps / 2 goals / 10 assists
I would pay – £10-£12 Million (could probably get away with less but he would be worth it)

I’ve suggested this to a few mates over a beer, Liverpool fans loved the idea, non-Liverpool fans said I was crazy…but am I?! Its common knowledge that Alonso was essentially forced out of a club he appears to love still today in a feeble attempt to get in Gareth Barry. Since leaving England he has continued to shine on the international stage and in Europe for Madrid, however Spanish teams rarely use talents past their prime and usually sell when they still have a few seasons left in them. With Alonso’s age we may be able to pick up a bargain that would only help players like Jordan Henderson continue to improve, not to mention the fact that he is already a Liverpool legend.

My final thought

Those would be my four targets, there were many more secondary additional choices I had thought up including Lewandowski, Owen, Tello, A. Johnson, Hoilett, Moses, Sinclair, De Jong and so on, but I only want to settle for these four for now.

Most importantly as a fan you will also know best, so who would you sign? Why don’t you get on your soapbox and let me know…

An Introduction to Soapbox Sox

10 Jul

I’m known for rants about anything and everything, possibly to my detriment, but I believe its part of my charm. One day during a full on rant about something I can’t even recall anymore a colleague piped up and said, “Get off yer soapbox Sox!” and so an idea was born…

Soapbox Sox

“On the Soapbox since 1987”

I felt my opinions should be heard but wouldn’t even know where to start looking for a soapbox in this day and age…so I gave up for a while…(I mean looking for a soapbox, not ranting)…until one day during my work as an SEO I realised I’m constantly advising people to blog to raise their profile and so a new idea was born, again…

I bet you’re asking yourself  “What can I expect to come across here?!” Well as it’s my first attempt at this I’m not going to limit myself so you could come across most anything. However if you want an idea of my keen interests check out the boy on the box page for more information.

So here’s to my latest project in forcing my opinions down the throat of the world one way or another, hopefully it won’t be long until you are all shouting “GET OFF YER SOAPBOX SOX” again and again and again…
