Loved everything about it smile.gif The big Stretchy licks, the tapping bit, the smooth vibrato, the overall vibe, everything. It just works as a solo and shows how far you've come since I first saw you improving solos. You were pretty darn good even then, you've gotten really darn good now smile.gif

It's a clinic in good technique and good solo craft. Usually solos lean to one or the other, but nope, you got both. Something tells me you spent many hours playing your fingers off last night on various things? You seemed plenty warmed up for this vid! In short, you KILLED IT!!

and

LEVELED UP!!!

I liked em both!! I liked the second one a bit better I think. whatdya think guys? I liked various bits in both but I think I'll focus on the last one. First off WELL PLAYED!!!! You play around quite a bit with the scales and the speed, giving the solo a dynamic vibe. This is something I've been sorta asking for from ya and you nailed it!! I also like how you created a sort of melody through line that you kept going back to almost like a chorus section. Being able to create strong melody lines is the mark of a good solo player imho. Even in a shorter solo, a good player will find a way to incorporate a main melody line, hopefully smile.gif Thats the part that most folks latch on to and connect with. Much the sam way that folks latch on to and connect with the repeated chorus section in a well written song. Of course, not every tune has to have this, but it's sure nice when it does IMHO. It just makes it more listenable I'd say. In short, you killed it and ....

LEVELED UP!!!!

Hey Todd,

basically at the last minute: here's my take biggrin.gif

I took my new axe for a testdrive and tried a Gilmour GR5 preset (which was sadly very buzzy when I didn't play).
Anyways, love the backing track.

Let me first congratulate you all the progress you have made. Your solos are getting better and better. Go back and watch your first shred fest challenge and then watch this one. You've come a long way. Your tone is great, your finger control is very impressive, not to mention the quality of the bends always hitting the right mark and then the use of multiple chordal techniques to enhance the dynamics of everything. Nice smile.gif The bits where you use a variety of chordal bits back to back is quite nice. Taken as a whole it creates a very FLOYD vibe that Gilmour himself would be proud of. Well done smile.gif

Great to see you in the Challenge!! Loved the solo smile.gif The Gilbert tone is pretty spot on imho! The tone works great with the backing. Your playing works great with it as well!! All your woodshedding is showing results. I'm glad also to see you picking up your axe!! I know you've been a busy guy of late so thanks for taking time to make a take! The licks are great and the bends all hit the mplaying in certain spots, is very Gilmour. One of his bit things was always leaving space for silence from the guitar to give great contrast to the notes that he did play. Well done smile.gif

guitaark. Also your use of space/e.g. not

I think this backing is more along the lines of the song Breathe, rather than Time.

NICE!! I really dig how you had the stones to take the long version to start with!! Also, I like how you combined some classic Gilmour chops with much more progressive chops and technical playing. You managed to blend the vibe of a Floyd solo with something almost Dream Theatre in it's approach. Not two easy things to combine imho as one is so heavily pentatonic and the other is just, well, not! Also you have a real sense of authority to your bends and vibrato which typically I see in players with decades of experience.

In short you NAILED IT smile.gif It was enjoyable to listen to from stem to stern and a clinic in combining disparate styles and approaches. In short, you just.....

LEVELED UP!!!

Congratulations my friend. Not just on this solo. Not just on all of 20plus of these solos you've done, not just on being the highest ranking BOOTCAMP Soldier EVER, IN THE HISTORY OF GMC. Congratulations on your relentless, dogged, determined, unrelenting, unyielding, focus that has allowed you to make the leap from just another guy that wanted to play the guitar, to being one of the guys that can.

Not only can you play, you play well. Not just well, darn well. As you have mentioned to me before, some of your friends are often amazed at some of the bits you can play given how short a time you have been playing overall. I too have been impressed with how much and how well you can play, given that you have not been playing that long. Usually I see the licks you can pull off with feeling, being done by guys who have been playing for decades.

It just goes to show that the one thing really needed for being a solid player is one simple thing. Persistence. To that end I have added a new bit of livery to your Challenge Medal. The simple phrase

SEMPER FI

This is the phrase used by the United states Marines. It means "ALWAYS FAITHFUL".

That describes you my friend. Your approach to the instrument and to life. I predict that you will be an ever more amazing player as the years go by. Many congrats and Happy New Year!!!

Hello Todd,

I really needed a break from the Jack White lesson, I've been playing that, Highway To Hell and, Breaking The Law for a month solid. I apologise if this is a little limited with the old pentatonics but as I say I've been in jail with Jack White and friends for a month and needed to break out laugh.gif

You are always welcome in CHALLENGE thread Phil!!! smile.gif Thanks for your take. I gave it several listens and it does seem like you are playing slightly against key here, and I wanted to ask if it's intentional? It's not that I don't like it or that it doesn't work, I do like it and it does work smile.gif I just want to find out if it's a happy accident or intentional tonal choice is all smile.gif The backing actually shifts key a bit, but to keep it simple I suggested just sticking with D Minor. If you follow the D Minor scale pattern, and then use your ear, you can find notes that fit well with the backing at any part of the backing track. However, as you focused quite a bit on the octave of the Root, and stayed pentatonic instead of minor, it creates a bit of sonic tension. Interesting sonic tension though smile.gif So if you would, write back and lead me through it a bit if you can. For now, well done and you just

P.S. I have you leveled up quite a bit beyond what is in your signature file that I'm seeing. I sure hope I'm not that far off in my badging smile.gif

LEVELED UP!!!
