For Immediate Release-PRESS RELEASE-JULY 2010

Magic Box Productions and Producer Nelle Stokes have been awarded a Bronze Telly Award for the documentary video MS 223: The Power of Arts Education. Formerly identified as the most dangerous intermediate school in New York City, MS 223 (the Laboratory School of Finance and Technology) is undergoing a transformation through the arts.

The ten-minute documentary(shown here) shows how underserved urban schools like MS 223 can successfully implement quality arts education that meets national and state standards, aligned with academic goals, and how the arts are taking their place as a basic subject, along with English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Technology, at MS 223. MS 223 is one of four schools to receive funding from The School Arts Support Initiative (SASI). A school-based program designed to help underserved New York City middle schools develop, enhance and sustain instruction in and through the arts. SASI is a partnership of The Center for Arts Education, The New York Times Company Foundation, the New York City Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Education. The video was commissioned by The Center for Arts Education.

A combination of reflective interviews with administrators, teachers, artists and students, as well as cineme verite footage of  arts programming in the classroom, illustrates how the school has progressed and lays the nuts and bolts needed for, development of a successful "arts-rich" environment.

This is the Third Telly Award for Magic Box Studios.
