Normative change interventions catalyze communities to reflect upon and challenge social norms that support individual attitudes and behaviors that lead to poor sexual and reproductive health. How do these approaches link with services, the broader community, and stakeholders? What is the balance between maintaining effectiveness and expanding to benefit more people and to foster policy and program development on a lasting basis?

Our keynote speaker will situate normative change interventions within the SBC field. We will share results of two interventions designed with these ideas and challenges in mind. We will then explore further, in roundtable discussions, ideas and experiences on the critical supports and challenges of such interventions.

About the Projects
The Gender Roles for Equality and Transformations (GREAT) Project tested life-stage specific strategies to promote gender-equitable attitudes and behaviors among adolescents and youth and their communities with the goal of reducing gender-based violence and improving sexual and reproductive health outcomes in post-conflict communities in Northern Uganda.

Implemented in Benin, Tékponon Jikuagou tested social networking approaches and engaged a small set of influential network actors to foster critical reflection and catalyze new ideas and model behaviors through women’s and men’s networks to confront social barriers, such as public and private discussions of sensitive issues and generalized family planning stigma, that stop couples and individuals from acting on desires to use family planning.
