CONFAB 2019 FRIDAY 27 SEPTEMBER THEATER ROTTERDAM 13.00h - 2.00h

CONFAB 2019. Organised by Rotterdam Pride in cooperation with Student Pride NL, Hogeschool Rotterdam, Inholland Rotterdam, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Thomas More Hogeschool and Codarts.

Rotterdam is known for its diversity, and the LGBTQIA+ community has long been a driving force in generating this city's cultural energy. Hosted by Snorella WC, CONFAB 2019 aims to not only shed light on the many challenges that the community has historically faced, but also on the ones that might lie ahead. In addition to lectures and discussions led by several keynote speakers, CONFAB 2019 will be home to a variety of engaging workshop events and exhibitions, providing a valuable way for attendees to get to know organisations, participate in spirited debates, and gain valuable insights into the history of a community that has deep roots in the city’s urban landscape.

Please note that most of the activities will be in Dutch. Interpretation equipment will be made available for the opening and closing ceremonies. In this booklet you’ll find all the information you need for the perfect CONFAB 2019 experience.

WELCOME! 12.00H - 13.00H

Theater Rotterdam

A warm welome to the CONFAB 2019!

VIVIAN MAJOOR Vivian Majoor, a 25-year-old musician and multi-instrumentalist from Groningen, learned to write songs within seven years that she lived in South America as a missionary child in a Christian family. With the influence of gospel and folk, Vivian writes quiet music in which the subjects vary from personal stories to world events.

In the meantime she has visited stages such as Stadsschouwburg in Groningen, Tivoli Vredenburg and Metropool Hengelo. Together with her sidekick Rebecca, the hunt for sensitive strings has opened! She is inspired by artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Lana del Rey and Courtney Barnett.

REGISTRATION Once arrived with a warm welcome by music of Vivian Majoor, you can check in at the information and check-in desk at the ground floor. Every guest will receive a personal name badge. Join CONFAB 2019 and enjoy various programs and get to know all the programs happening on 27th of September.

OPENING. This year the CONFAB is organized by Rotterdam Pride and Student Pride NL. We will kick off the CONFAB at 13.00 with a glamorous opening at the theatre stage. The CONFAB 2019 program will be hosted by the fabulous Snorella WC. Alderman Said Kasmi will officially open the conference. He is responsible for portfolios of Education, Culture and Tourism for the city of Rotterdam. Student Pride NL and Rotterdam Pride will be interviewed about this years collaboration and program. Of course… an opening is nothing without an amazing performance - this years openingsact is Roi Soleil!

Roi Soleil Roi Soleil is a popstar icon, created by theatre maker, singer and performer Matthijs Rijsdijk. He graduated in July 2019 at Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam at the department Music Theatre. During his education, he always had a fascination for alter egos and icons that are larger than life. Roi Soleil is inspired by the French monarch Louis XIV and this golden figure will fly during Rotterdam Pride. In this interdisciplinary pop concert, we will celebrate pride, golden love, fashion and freedom of expression.

On va voler. Tous!

DEEP DIVES. We’ve invited Sarafina Van Ast this year to create two different programs for the CONFAB 2019. Curious? Sarafina Van Ast “As child I was raised within two different cultures, the Surinamese one and the dutch one. This has always made me more aware of the other. How they are perceived and how they are listened to. Within my own religion which is Islam I experience this same otherness towards many things, but what interest me the most is the difference between women and men.

Through my poetry and performances I discovered this other form of otherness. The fact that I do not identify with feminine or masculine words. Yet the pitch and tone of masculine and feminine voices is something that keeps coming back into my practice. Together with text and audio I create performances and installations where my audience has the opportunity to step into the story of the other.”

DEEP DIVES. PABO: Teaching with pride Schools should be a safe space, both for students and teachers. What is it like for LGBTQIA+ in (front of) the classroom? Students and staff from the pabo (Teacher Education for Primary Schools) of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and Thomas More University of Applied Sciences will share personal experiences and engage in conversation with the audience. What is it like to ‘come out’ to your class? How do schools treat the subject?

TUINKAMER (ground floor) 14.15 - 15.00 H

Pink Religion, a dialogue

W

Religion and sexual diversity are often seen as adversaries, but organisations like Roze Vieringen (LGBTQIA+ church services), Wijdekerk (promoting churches to be a safe space for LGBTQIA+) and Maruf (muslim LGBTQIA+) proof that this doesn’t have to be the case. In this dialogue we will talk about how faith and gender and/or sexual diversity can both find an integrated place in people’s lives and how this can be promoted in faith communities

TUINKAMER (ground floor) 15.15 - 16.00 H

Activating the LGBTQ+ Community in Academia A workshop looking at implementing best practices to support the LGBTQ+ community at EUR and beyond.

Freddie is an internationally minded, native English European advocacy specialist with experience in communication and public relations. In his studies, he focused on the cultural solidarity aspects of public diplomacy. Indeed, the importance of understanding if not solidarity is something that he is acutely aware of, and deeply supportive of. This is why he, as a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Office of Erasmus University Rotterdam, would like to discuss the topic of LGBTQ+ in Academia.

DEBATES. LGBTQIA+ & THE CULTURAL SECTOR How inclusive is the cultural sector? A question that has been asked with increasing urgency lately. We see that the discussion about this topic is mainly about cultural diversity or inclusiveness. That is not enough. During a previous debate during the IDAHOT CONFAB in May, we found out that the cultural sector is still too often implicitly involved in a straightforward hetero or male-female context, which LGBTQIA+ people do not recognize themselves with suďŹƒciently.

While the cultural sector, like no other, is capable of exposing such exclusion mechanisms and thereby raising awareness. Rotterdam Pride does not want to focus about LGBTQIA+ only once a year, but also bringing throughout the entire year LGBTQIA +, diversity and inclusiveness into the cultural sector. Therefore the arts and culture sector needs to investigate what is needed to achieve a truly inclusive cultural sector.

MAIN STAGE (1st floor) 14.15 - 15.00 H

DEBATES. DEBATE ON LGBTQIA+ AND EDUCATION All institutions of higher education in Rotterdam see diversity and inclusiveness as a strength. Every student should be welcome and feel safe, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, political preference, cultural background, social economic background, gender identity, age etc. A safe learning environment will contribute to study success.

During this debate you can participate with dierent students, employees and lecturers from dierent institutions of higher education. The following participants will be present: Jet de Ranitz (chairman of Inholland University of Applied Sciences), Thom Maasdam (diversity ambassador of Inholland University of Applied Sciences), Ron Bormans (chairman of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences), Rutger Engels (rector magnificus of Erasmus University Rotterdam) and Wilma Franchimon (chairman Codarts Rotterdam).

The debate is led by: Pim van der Helm (Thomas More University of Applied Sciences) and Roelof Eleveld (secretary Inholland University of Applied Sciences).

MAIN STAGE (1st floor) 16.30 - 17.15 H
