She could have had a wardrobe malfunction at any moment, which is why Rihanna must have needed pal Katy Perry to have her back - or her front, as it were.

The blue-haired pop star made sure that her longtime pal hadn't popped out of her dress at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards tonight.

It would have been quite easy for the 23-year-old Bajan singer to shimmy out of her slinky black Giorgio Armani gown.

Despite its plunging neckline and high slit, the dress featured an elegant mermaid-like train.

The We Found Love singer wore a slew of Neil Lane jewels, including a diamond and gold snake amulet, a gold cuff, gold and diamond rings as well as gold triangle earrings.

She also wore a strategically placed gold body necklace, as well as sexy Christian Louboutin heels and a matching Jimmy Choo clutch.

The recently divorced Perry must have decided to go for the gold as well with her third costume change of the night.

The 27-year-old wore a glistening gold Gucci gown paired with, of course, some signature Louboutin heels.

Her blue hued hairdo added a pop of typical Katy Perry colour to her otherwise glamorous ensemble.

The best friends clearly thought the other looked absolutely fabulous given the way they gazed at one another for the cameras.

The chart toppers couldn't resist posing coyly and provocatively, as Rihanna rested her hand on Katy's thigh.

Their performances might have added to their sensual behaviour.

Katy sang her new hit, 'Part of Me', while dressed in a scantily clad space age outfit.

It was her big comeback performance, her first major show since splitting with husband Russell Brand in December.

Indeed, she seemed to be singing directly to her ex as she triumphantly warbled the words: 'This is the part of me that you're never gonna ever take away from me/Throw your sticks and stones, throw your bombs and your blows/But you're not gonna break my soul'.

Meanwhile, Rihanna showed off her toned midriff in a cropped shirt and tight trousers while getting frisky with a male dancer on stage.

She toned it down later during her set to perform the single 'Princess of China' with Coldplay.

Neither of the pals won any massive accolades tonight, though Rihanna was featured on two Grammy-winning tracks.

'All of the Lights', featuring Kanye West, Kid Cudi and Fergie, won Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

Katy, meanwhile, lost two Grammys to the night's big winner, Adele: Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
