High School Volunteer Poll Workers

There is an amazing opportunity for your high school students to volunteer and get involved in the upcoming Presidential Primary Election on March 3, 2020. San Diego is unique and an example to the rest of the country as we have a long-standing High School Student Poll Worker Program. Please be an ambassador at your school by promoting this opportunity to your students. This is a volunteer position and students do not get ‘paid’ for volunteering to work at a polling place on election day. As volunteers, students do earn 21 community service hours, and based on the position they fulfill on election day they will receive a stipend. The stipend is a reimbursement for training ($25.00), travel expenses ($31.00), reimbursement for any travel to pick up voting materials (if applicable to their position - $20.00), as well as reimbursement for meal expenses ($44.00) on election day.

Off-season strength and conditioning

Good morning, I wanted to pass on that I am officially starting Titan Power, a comprehensive and unified strength and conditioning program for our athletes. It’s FREE and open to all Eastlake students. They just need to sign up through EastlakeTitans.com and sign up for “weight lifting”. They DO NOT need a physical to participate. This just keeps a paper trail for the district of who is training after school hours. It begins Monday 12/09/19 and we will be meeting Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3pm-4pm in the weight room. Please pass this on to your kids and have them stop by if they have questions.

US District Court: Civics Contest

Good Morning,

My name is Brooke Clarke, and I am the community outreach extern at the United States District Court in the Southern District of California. Beginning on February 15, 2020 we will be accepting entries to our 2020 Civics Contest. Each year, the court chooses a topical theme and has students submit either a 500 to 1,000 word essay or a 3-5 minute long video related to the theme. This years theme is: “The Right to Vote: Milestone Anniversaries”. This was chosen because 2020 is the 150th anniversary of the ratification of the 15th amendment and 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment. In their essay or video, students are asked to respond to the following prompt: “In the wake of the 15th and 19th Amendments, barriers remained to prevent United States citizens from voting. Do formal or informal barriers remain today? What additional changes would you make, if any, to Americans’ voting rights?”. Students are given a list of cases and acts that will assist them in researching this topic. I have attached more details to this email including the flier and contest rules.

Students finalist at the district level will win cash prizes and be sent for consideration as a circuit level finalist. Those who win at the circuit level will win cash prizes and be invited to the 2020 Ninth District Judicial Conference in Portland, Oregon (travel and accommodations included).
