Wild Pitch

Rate this book
There’s never been any question in Sean Tucker’s mind that he’d do whatever it took to make it to the major leagues and be one of the best pitchers of his time. The day he acknowledged to himself that he was gay was also the day he vowed to stay in the closet in order to chase his dreams. The problem is, he never counted on Mason Atley.

Sean showed rookie short stop Mason Atley the ropes, both on the field and off. The two forged a friendship which continued as both of them moved through the ranks of the farm system and into the majors. Unfortunately, there’s always been one secret Mason never felt he could share with Sean. Until now.

For seven years, Sean lived with the fact that he loved a man who would never reciprocate. When Mason admits that he’s always known he’s bisexual but has never allowed himself to pursue a relationship with a man, will Sean be able to put aside his reservations about starting a relationship with the friend he’d always assumed was straight? And more importantly, will they be able to find a way to stay together when their careers keep them apart more than they can be together?

Sloan Johnson

Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s body. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass.

When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after.

Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book?

Now, Sloan is a tattooed, purple haired mom of two kids, one of which was a thank you present to her husband for letting her get a Staffordshire Terrier with more anxiety issues than Sloan has, which is saying something. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself in a good book and forget that she has somewhere to be.

I LOVE sports themed books. Baseball, Hockey, Football, Ice Skating, Basketball, just about all of them. I also try to read as many of them as I can. This one by Sloan Johnson looked like a winner to me! Excellent blurb, gorgeous cover, great early reviews. But I had a really big problem with the way women were portrayed in this book. Enough of a problem that it seriously hampered my enjoyment of it. The best way to express how badly women were treated is to post some of my status updates for you to read:

2% -
“Hey, sweetie,” Mason answered, flipping me off as I rolled my eyes. It was immature, but I couldn’t help it. He was so in love with her he couldn’t see what a controlling, manipulative bitch she was. I couldn’t hear what he was saying as he walked away, but it sounded like she was freaking about something. Again. She’d made Bridezilla look calm and laid-back about three phone calls ago.

15% - Ugh, the women in this book are being treated and talked about like they are merely pieces of meat, appreciated only as things to fuck. I hope that goes away soon.

18% -

30% -
...four waitresses wearing skimpy referee outfits bombarded us. All of them seemed to have tugged their shirts a little lower and tied them tighter in the back in preparation for tonight. Waitresses counting on their assets to earn bigger tips, or something else altogether, seemed to be one of the few constants from one city to the next.

Did I mention how poorly women are treated in this book?

54% -
...had no clue how Teresa had gotten a key to his place or why she was here, but there was no way in hell I was going to leave her unattended. She perched herself on one of the high barstools at the breakfast bar and glared at me. I chuckled as I wondered whether she was working to put some sort of hex on me, because she sure looked like a witch with her pointy black shoes, straight black hair and long fingernails.

68% -
“Yeah, he knows.” Her body tensed, and I knew this situation was about to get even worse. “I had to threaten his new slut when she answered his phone, but he knows.”

Even the women hate the other women in this book. I'm disheartened.

100% - Not thrilled. Characters were confusing. Women treated like garbage.

So, there you have it. I wasn't able to see the positive through all the negative. But don't get me wrong! I actually enjoy an evil, back-stabbing, conniving bitch (or bastard!) character in my favorite M/M books. But this one just went above and beyond my definition of good taste. Cannot recommend.

Sidenote: Wild Pitch enjoys a 4.03 average rating at GoodReads and a 4.5 average rating at Amazon. I am definitely in the minority, so make sure you read some other reviews before deciding not to read this one based on my review alone. Oh and, yes, I will be reading the second book in the series Curveball. I'm hoping the women are treated better in this one!

DNFed at 39%.

I am done with this for two reasons.

1) The inner musings of the MCs are so contradictory, they make my head spin in a really bad way. Mix in a healthy dose of biphobia and ridiculous notions about what qualifies as sex/cheating, wild boners when someone touches a KNEE, and my complete inability to connect to either of the characters, and you have this mess.

2) The misogyny is EXTREME, even for MM. We have the stereotypical bitch-ex, "slutty waitresses in skimpy dresses", and not one strong female character. One mother is distant & cold, the other one is there without any kind of role. She exists, that's all she's there for. What's more is the constant running commentary of "Don't be a girl" , "This is so girly, it's ridiculous" , "needy bitch" , "I'm not a chick, I don't need romance." It's super gross.

What really broke my back though is the conversation between Sean and his sister. When he calls her struggles with life "drama", I was getting really pissy. But when he saw her eating a couple of pastries as comfort and this happened:

"[...] she responded, shoving yet another slice of pastry into her mouth. The girl was going to wind up three hundred pounds if she didn't watch it."

I. Was. Done.

Fuck you. Because there are so many things wrong with this, I don't even know where to start or end. Shove it, I don't need shit like this in my life or my books.

OK, I made an error in reading this one...as you can tell by the fact that it's taken me 6 weeks to finish. I couldn't connect with the characters and didn't feel that they connected either. 3 stars only. Sorry.

This was my second read by this author and first mm read from her. I went into the book with no expectations or judgments just kindly reading the story. Got excited since it was based in Chicago half of the time. I liked the beginning alot, I really enjoy the friends to lovers trope. I thought Sean expressing his love in the beginning in his thoughts were funny. Being in love with your best friend for years is hard when you have to be around that person. I liked Mason alot.

I had a couple issues with the plot. I felt like Sean should have been happy because, he got everything he wanted, but it felt like self sabotage. I did not get the reservations when in the beginning this was your dream, to have your love of your friend and your career. Mason surprised me by how easy it seemed he transitioned. I do have a problem with him being "bisexual" for years but being scared to tell Sean. I did not see the point of him stating that, and then being calmed about Sean's feelings. He had never been with a man, so where did the bi-sexuality come from? I liked some of the characters. I don't really understand Sean's family dynamics, it's like they spoke around the issues that were important. I'm still not sure.

I really liked the first 40% of the story, and then it went downhill to me. It seem like the pacing got slower, and it just became more wordy as the pages went along. I would had preferred it to be all sugary sweet once the two guys came along, I just felt the second half of the story was unnecessary drama. I did like the epilogue. I felt like it's something Mason wanted, and I'm glad he was happy.

Rounded up because the sequel sounds promising and I'm looking forward to it.

The biggest negative for this story (IMO) is that there is no buildup whatsoever to the MCs relationship. We are told in the first 5% of the story that these guys were roommates for a year. Have been best friends for 7 years and are now both single again. So it starts with them already attracted to each other and from that is a jump to bed and exchanging ILYs in a matter of days. The buildup and sexual tension from that initial stage is missing.

It is still a decent read.

Not much to say except it really was difficult to stay engaged. The relationship between the two men was very confusing and the content was just bland. Didn't get a chance to finish and don't know if I will

An entertaining read, maybe a little bit too much drama at some points.
I enjoyed the sports setting and I might have a look at the next installment in the series; the side characters of this story are having some potential to get their own! :)

Slick's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

When several people who I know and trust tell me I need to read a book, I listen. The people who told me I needed to read Sloan Johnson's Wild Pitch know that I love M/M and baseball romances and this blended those two things really well. There were a lot of memorable moments in this story; some were good, some were bad and some were downright joyful but in the end this story is about two friends who have put their desires aside for years finally taking the chance to own up to them and make themselves happy, consequences be damned.

Mason and Sean have been friends for years, once teammates and roommates and while Sean was out to Mason he's been firmly in the closet with his MLB teammates. While Sean has always wanted Mason he kept those feelings locked down because having Mason as a friend was important to him so finding out years later that Mason locked his feelings down as well and even went so far as to marry a woman throws Sean for a loop and begins this tale of two MLB players on opposing teams trying to figure out how to live and love under secrecy all while traveling with their teams.

This is the story of two very different ball players. Mason is not having a great year and while he likes baseball it isn't everything in his life. He looks forward to the day where he doesn't have to travel non-stop, when he can have a normal job, a home and family. For Sean being a baseball player is all he's ever wanted and attaining certain goals will help him show is judgmental family that he was right to not finish his college degree and go pro. For the two of them figuring out how to not only manage a relationship but how to make sure they both get what they need from their life together puts even more pressure on a relationship they are both struggling to figure out.

I liked so much about this story including just the fact that while professional sports spout off about acceptance and a non-hostile working environment we know that isn't always the case and we can only hope that bringing that to light in fiction will at some point boil over into real life. I appreciated that once they admitted to wanting each other there wasn't a rush to have sex that Mason's impending divorce made them wait, that Sean wanted to make sure that Mase was in the right frame of mind, and most of all that it was about the two of them and nothing more. I liked that they both had some support in their corner; family, friends, and even a teammate or two. While I hate that their secret got out before they were ready, I love that they refused to deny it. The two issues I had with this story were these two men seemed to have a really hard time communicating their feelings to one another; they would spill their guts to friends and family but often didn't share things they should with one another. I have a theory that was in part to the newness of their relationship and the fact they'd been friends for so long that the worried about losing each other for good and also because they were both involved in the same profession they simply worried too much about what their decisions would mean for their careers and their budding relationship. The other issue is one I see frequently in sports romance and that is to imply that these professional players let something that is going on in their private life adversely affect their game. I think anyone who follows any professional sporting team knows that for these men this is their job, their livelihood and their reputation at stake so to imply they can't block out something going on privately to give 100 percent to their team is a disservice to professional athletes everywhere. Despite these two issues, I very much enjoyed Wild Pitch by Sloan Johnson and look forward to reading the next book in this series.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Wild Pitch from the talented Sloan Johnson.

As a HUGE baseball fan (Go Sox!), I really enjoyed the sports elements in Wild Pitch. The game wasn't shoved into the background as 'just a job'. There was enough to make it a real part of Sean and Mason's lives. And it is. To dedicate your life to being a professional athlete is a huge commitment.

The love story, on the other hand, is the main focus. Sean and Mason are friends from the moment they room together in the minor leagues. Mason knows that Sean is gay, but never discusses his own preferences.
Years later, after a failed relationship, Mason has to decide if he can open up to Sean and confess his bisexuality and his attraction to his best friend.
Sean, gay and in the closet for the sake of his career, has always been in love with Mason. Once he knows Mason's secret, it's finally time to explore his feelings for a man he thought he'd never have.

Sean and Mason's ups and downs make for a fantastic ride. Two hot, athletic men, exploring new and old feelings, PLUS baseball? You can't really go wrong in my book, but the author makes these men real. You care what happens to them. You want them to find that HEA. Add in Mason's adorable parents, a nosy but well-meaning catcher, and Sean's crazy sister and you have a great book.

I can't wait for the next book!

So, I liked the story but wish the narrator would have put a little "ummmppphh" behind the narration. It wasn't quite monotone - but just a step above. It was however, a good story and I enjoyed watching/listening to these two MC find their way from best friends to lovers, in the world of Major League Baseball. Will be moving on to the second Audiobook and see if anything improves.

I like sports romance so I was very interested to check this one out. I could not get into the storyline at all. I kept reading, but it never got better for me. I don't how to explain what I didn't like. All I can think is meh. The majority of people do like this book; so, it's probably just not my kind of story.

The ability to be one’s true self without secrets is a luxury some people don’t have, especially those in a masculine game like Major League Baseball. So, many players conceal things about themselves that might force them to be seen in a different way – one such concealment being their sexuality.

Both Sean Tucker and Mason Atley have wanted to be major league ball players their entire lives, and they reached their goal, forging amazing careers, but the one aspect of their lives that has never felt complete has been finding someone to spend their lives with…Mason thought he had it with his ex wife, but he realized that regardless of how much he tried to deny is true feelings…suppress his inner needs, he couldn’t create the kind of life he wanted outside the game of baseball because he didn’t have the person he needed beside him to do so, Sean.

Sean’s always known he was gay, but he’s never made that fact public knowledge because the repercussions could cost him his career. So, Sean’s lived a lie and pined away for the one man he never thought he’d have – Mason. But when Sean and Mason reconnect and their true feelings are finally out in the open, how will the two juggle their professional lives where they feel like they have to hide the truth and their private lives where they can’t seem to get enough of each other and want to give their relationship a real shot?

Sloan Johnson brings together my two favorite types of reading in Wild Pitch – sports and m/m romance, and Sloan does a great job of balancing the plot with enough baseball in order for readers to understand the passion that Mason and Sean have for the game with the burgeoning relationship that’s developing between them and the ups and downs that come with trying to make a go at having something real while having to hide aspects of their love/friendship for the sake of their career.

I’m an absolute sucker for a friends to lovers’ storyline, and Sloan allows readers to understand Sean’s apprehension with Mason’s confession and his hesitancy to put his heart on the line for something that he believes could just be a passing fad. What I would have liked to see more of was the bond between the two men. At times, I didn’t feel Sean and Mason’s connection was explored as concretely as it should have been in order for readers to see how real their feelings were for one another. The physical nature of their relationship was developed extremely well…it wasn’t rushed even though we could sense their desperation for each other, but I would have liked to see more conversation and depth to how they communicated with one another outside of the bedroom.

What I do have to mention is that Sloan expanded scenes to allow a more thorough connection between Sean and Mason, adding in a bit more spice and communication than the original version, and I love that fact because she’s always looking to improve her craft and she has my absolute respect for her willingness to take that approach in her writing.

Sloan’s Homeruns series is definitely one I will continue reading. I’m excited for Jason’s story next. He was a huge help to Sean throughout Wild Pitch, and I can’t wait for him to get his man as well!

ARC received for an honest review

There are plenty of friends-to-lovers books out there, heck I have read so many of them in my time - but this is my first m/m friends to lovers romance.

And I have to say, Sloan Johnson has hit a home run with this one!

Sean and Mason have been friends for years, but they have been keeping secrets from each other. When these secrets start to come out, things could change for the better or worse for them both.

I adored Sean and Mason. I had a smile on my face most the time whilst reading - I couldn't help myself! It was such a heartwarming story.

I think though, that it was all about Sean for me. I loved who he was, what he did for his relationship with Mason.

There were a few twists and turns along the way, but nothing too over the top silly.

I loved getting to know some of their family, friends and workmates, and hope to learn more about them in the next books.

Wild Pitch is a sweet romance that once I started I just couldn't put down.

I feel that Ms Johnson has found her niche with the m/m genre, and cannot wait to read what she has for us next.

First I will start off by saying that I absolutely loved this book, it was filled with so much love and emotion and watching these two struggle to find the true happiness they so deserved.

Sean Tucker is the pitcher for the Mavericks. His life is pure baseball , he lives and breaths the sport and does everything to hide his true sexuality in fear of ruining his career.
Sean does not do relationships never has but when his fellow teammate / friend with benefits is transferred to another team it leaves him very uneasy which in turn effects his playing.

Mason Atley plays for the Bulldogs and is recently going through a divorce and fighting his demons on admitting to himself his true sexuality and his hidden feelings towards his best friend Sean.

On a recent outing with fellow teammates Sean gets drunk and is rescued when a teammate calls Mason to come and pick him up before all H*** breaks out.

Mason brings Sean back to his place to hang out but is finding it hard to hold back his feeling and struggling with the fact to let Sean know his true feelings towards him. The truth is revealed and this is the beginning of such a beautiful journey watching two best friends try to make things work.

Sean and Mason had a lot to work out and at times I wanted to slap both of them and tell them "wake up". Sean was afraid to give in at first fearing that Mason was just experimenting and he might one day decide that this really wasn't what he wanted so he guarded himself and that only made Mason work harder to prove how certain he was about his feeling for Sean.

Being in the spotlight and living so far in the closet all their lives with certain life expectations makes them both reevaluate what is most important for them to grow together.

There are a lot of twist and turns and unexpected circumstances that push these two to make decisions that will effect the outcome of their relationship and it's a journey that had me glued to each page and the sexual chemistry between these two was off the charts HOT

Sloan Johnson's writing in this story was amazing whereas I literally felt as if I was right there next to both Sean and Mason going through each and every emotion with them . The secondary characters played such important roles in the story in bringing together these two and I'm so looking forward to reading more from this series. I highly recommend this book and give it 5*

I love all things baseball, the game, the stats, the history, movies and books about and the NY Yankees and the Washington Nationals. (The Yankees are my heart though). I like that this book tried to give the reader the experience and stress of playing big league baseball.

Friends, ex-roommates and veteran players for competing teams. Time is putting its stress on an already stressful profession that is always complicated by the ever present press. Sean has loved Mason forever. Mason knows Sean is gay but Mason never tells his long time BFF that he is bi. Why? Not sure. Then it is true and dare time. Each admits his true feelings for the other and they dare to have a secret romance. Mason watches a drunk Sean sleeping it off and ponders I'd always thought about what it'd be like to be with a man. So he is wondering if it'd be worth mentioning to him. You think? Of course they do talk (Yeah) and the hot sex starts.

I liked the male characters in this book, MCs and supporting cast. The women were mostly harsher drawn characters. Understandable for Mason's wife who is called the Ice Queen from the very beginning of the book. The MCs personal struggles were layered with their baseball struggles. I liked that.

I liked that I got both POVs but had to keep checking back to see exactly which MC's POV it was. Other errors kept the star number down. Slid instead of slide. Grammar errors: ie As soon Sean shoved and I Abi was retreating.... Tense errors also bothered me. I can ignore the occasional error, but when they are numerous enough that these errors interfere with the flow of my reading, I have to mention it.

It is not the best baseball book I have read, but it was entertaining and kept me reading. I will read the next in the series.

I. Couldn't. Put. It. Down!!
OMG! I loved Sean and Mason. I wanted to get the conclusion, but I didn't want it to end. I love when you can emotionally connect with the characters. I felt Sean and Mason. I felt the love and passion they shared. Sloan is an amazing writer. She knows how to weave a story. I went into this apprehensive. After "Godsend" I was wondering if this was going to be another heartbreaking cry fest, but it wasn't. It wasn't even all that angst filled. It was a very enjoyable read.

The characters were loving, and passionate. The chemistry and sexual tension was off the charts. The sex was hot, and I loved the storyline. A huge part of this book deals with their baseball careers, but it isn't overloaded with sports. I'm not a baseball fan, and I never felt bored or overwhelmed with the sports aspect of the story. This book had great secondary characters. I loved Mason's parents, Sean's sister and I also loved Jason and Eric. I am looking forward to Jason's book (I hope Sloan is typing fast), and I hope we see plenty more books in this series, along with glimpses of Sean and Mason in the future!

Review copied from the other edition of the same book. Highly problematic author. Slut-shaming, mocking women, degrading women, all around misogynistic book (and author).

I tried to power through, it's a baseball series after all,but the casual derogatory inner thoughts about women were just piling up. Why is he worried about how a waitress dresses? Why does the wife/ex-wife of one of the MC's need to be written as a cold bitch over and over again? Doesn't add to the romance plot or the story in general. Very disappointed.

*Once the rest of the team made their way up the stairs, four waitresses wearing skimpy referee outfits bombarded us. All of them seemed to have tugged their shirts a little lower and tied them tighter in the back in preparation for tonight. Waitresses counting on their assets to earn bigger tips, or something else altogether, seemed to be one of the few constants from one city to the next."

I mean, what? Seriously, this is just garbage. Unnecessary, inaccurate, garbage. Unfortunately, this was one of many examples. This author is on my permanent Do Not Read Authors list.

This was such a sweet story. A bit of gay for you too.

I enjoyed this story, but for me it was too sweet. There was a few twists and turns and things the men had to get over, but nothing that was too unexpected for me or turbulent.

The writing was really excellent though so although there wasn't a whole lot of suspense, I found myself quickly reading the book.

I really did love Sean and the battles he went through for/with Mason. He was my favorite character and I really related to him. His life was one way and that's all he ever wanted, but when Mason came out to him, everything changed... even if it wasn't all at once.

Such a great, sweet book. Only reason it's not 5 stars for me is that it was just too sweet for my personal taste.

I was given this in return for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

3.5 stars!! I thoroughly enjoyed this M/M romance from Sloan Johnson. Two gay baseball players was a big thing and with one struggling with being bi and going through a divorce and the other being in the closet for fear of the repercussions you knew that this was going to be a hard ride for both of them. Also, throw in the fact that the two men in question were best friends. We therefore have lots of elements to tick the boxes, M/M and friends to lovers. My only little criticism which is personal preference was the connection between the two men didn't really grab me, I missed an intense connection between them and one element I saw coming and I thought was a tad predictable but overall I loved it.

An interesting take on a traditional troupe. I got a little confused switching from the prologue to the first chapter, but it wasn't nothing I couldn't solve re-reading couple of paragraphs. I think the use of the players last names is what threw me off.

It was simple and mostly everyone was accepting of the MCs; the opposition happened in the background. The main characters were interesting, but I wanted a little more from them. I don't think their feelings for each other showed how long they waited for their HEA. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well and I'm looking forward to the next books in the series.

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. I love sports themed books and this one excited me. I instantly loved Sean and grew to love Mason. Mason and Sean are the perfect example of friendships turned into more. You see how their love develops and grows. They are a sweet and funny couple. They story line was great and really kept me reading. I read this is one sitting. Books like this are few and far between. Great story, chemistry between the characters and an Epilogue that will have you weeping big happy tears. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series.

This is an awesome read, I really enjoyed it!! The book is about two men (best friends)in the closet b/c of their careers( in baseball on opposite teams) & hiding something from each other each other for 7yrs. It was such a heartwarming read & a smile was placed on my face most of the time reading it. I shed tears of sadness & tears of joy. I really just love Mason & Sean! Thanks for sharing their story Sloan & looking forward to reading Curve Ball!

4.5 stars I actually really enjoyed this. No, it wasn't an earth shattering new plot or anything but I felt like the characters were really grounded and even though I'm not a baseball fan (football is my sport), I enjoyed being in that world. I can't wait to read the next book and to find out more about Jason!

This book had the potential to be a great fit for me. GYF, cherry popping, best friends to lovers trope... but the writing ruined it for me. Editing errors, too much freaking baseball details that were completely unnecessary, writing too disperse, the MCs were two dimensional... I ended up skipping complete paragraphs.
Didn't care much for it.

I'm dropping this one because of the rampant misogyny. Women are talked about very poorly in this book, and I am not here for that.

I also got bored, and felt that the writing was very stilted.
