HSC Season 7 Week 1: Moon Patrol

Important Note: This weeks competition is over and no further scores will be accepted.

When you signed up with the Luna City Police Department, who would have thought that you'd be assigned to Sector Nine--home of the toughest thugs in the galaxy? Sure, you've got the finest patrol car on the force--complete with anti-gravity jump buttons and laser bullets--but in the rough terrain of Sector Nine you need more than fancy equipment to survive. Just evading huge craters and moon rocks is hard enough without having to deal with hostile UFOs and enemy landmines and tanks. Getting through your patrol in one piece is almost impossible!

Scoring Points in Moon Patrol
 • Complete each section of five markers - 1000 points (2000 points in the second course)
 • After each section, you get bonus points based on speed. For each second under the average time, you get 100 points. The average time is 55 seconds for sections 1 and 2, 60 seconds for section 3 and 4, and 65 seconds for section 5. (70 seconds for all sections of the second course)
 • Complete the entire first course - 5000 points (10000 points for the second course)
 • Jump a single crater - 100 points
 • Jump a double crater - 200 points
 • Jump a land mine - 50 points
 • Jump a rock - 80 points
 • Shoot a rock - 100 points
 • Jump a tank - 100 points
 • Shoot a tank - 200 points
 • Shoot a regular UFO - 100 points
 • Shoot a crater UFO - 200 points
 • Shoot an enemy car - 500/800/1000 points (random)
 • One bonus Moon Buggy is awarded at 10,000, 30,000, and 50,000 points.

Hints and Tips
 • As you travel along the course, you'll see areas where a rock is placed just behind a land mine or crater. When this happens, time your shot very carefully.
 • Another trick: Try taking one long jump over two closely positioned obstacles.
 • Watch out for UFOs that look like this: ~ They drop missiles which create huge craters directly in front of your Moon Buggy. The best way to handle these pests is to destroy them before they can drop missiles.
 • To protect yourself, shoot at UFO missiles while they're in the air.
 • Start your jumps well in front of a hole to land just on the other side, giving you more time and space to begin a second jump.
 • Scoring points for destroying the enemy car is random, so just shoot as soon as you can.

It's also worth pointing out that we played this game a few years back. You might want to check it out for further hints.
The Manual
As always, you really should read the manual. In case you don't have the manual, AtariAge has a typed copy available online. Here are the hints it provides:

Zoyx said: "The place where I'm stuck is the 3 tanks followed by a jump between two craters."

Pretty obvious advice but as soon as you shoot the last tank, jump and jump immediately after landing.

Make sure you are going "normal" speed and not accelerating with the stick pushed to the right

After the mine field I never accelerate unless it's to get out of the way of UFO fire.

Captain Beard said: "And I've MASTERED everything up to the triple tanks. I lose all my guys there or immediately after -- you know, when the bomber blows a hole in the only safe place to land after a crater jump. What tha--!?!?"

Yes that sucks HARD!

I have had a nice run and then that bastard kills me by making an extra crater on the side of a double crater so it's impossible to jump. Or forcing me to long jump right into a conveniently placed rock. Seems like it is "smart" enough to do that. Bastard!

My strategy in the later levels is when the bombers come out just jam on the brakes, usually they will drift to the left to get closer to you, then take them out or speed up a bit to keep them to your left where they can't hurt you. I sorta slow down/speed up to try and keep them from getting a bead on me.

The mine field on the second course is the one that annoys me.

FOUR UFOs come out right before there and if you don't get them ALL, they shoot at you while you are trying to jump mines.

Problem is, the mines are so close together that you have to jump them with the brakes on (stick pushed to the left, slowest speed, jump at the last possible moment, jump again, and again)

So if a missile is coming down, you can't speed up or your jump will land you on the NEXT mine.

Pick your poison.

Oh and one last tip that may be obvious. ALWAYS take out the lowest UFOs first if possible, can't react fast enough to dodge their shots if one makes it past your missiles.

The first mine field? Just floor it and jump early. Can breeeze through it in 15 seconds.

My advice for the second course is never speed up.

Slow and steady.

Trade the bonus time for the lives you will avoid losing.

As soon as you blow up a tank on the edge of a crater, jump and hammer that fire button as soon as you land, but not before or you will shoot over the top of the enemy missile and die

It's mostly set up so you will land at the exact right spot so the NEXT tank can't shoot you

And when the bombers come out. STOP.

At least temporarily

The second mine field, the single mines, you have to be going SLOW or you can't make it.

Three slow singles, then resume default speed for the two doubles then repeat.

It will take a bit of practice.
Captain Beard
My tip to clearing the part just past the triple tanks, where the bombers seem to always blow a crater in the only safe place to land: You can guide the enemy missile! I'd never noticed earlier in the game, but the act of speeding up and slowing down effectively drags the landscape back and forth underneath an incoming missile. In other words, wait until the crater-bomb is dropped then slow down until the shot lines up with the already existing crater or the rock. Voila! No new crater!

I'll start with 38,600

Am I using the right rom on my CC2?

I mean that's first shot at it and top 3 Twin Galaxies.

Am I exploiting some "continue" cheat?

EDIT: OK maybe not, I start with 0 at Stage 1 every time.

Its a not well known game for records, so super small numbers slip by on some games. This one is the case.

I'm going to join this season, now that I got my collection back.

OK, here is the truth of the matter. The high score of Twin Galaxies is not really the high score. Go check some of the other scores of the high score club in reference to highest score of all time.

Here is the real highest scores.

1. Todd Rogers 1,094,100

2. Ron Corcoran 484,300

3. Mark Feldt 455,300

4. Stephen Riesberger 287,700

The fact that Twin Galaxies wiped away 4 scores seems fishy.

36,780 - just to get me on the board.

Like godzillajoe, I expect to beat that, so I'll post a pic later.

Good to see you guys back on the HSC!

Man the second course is TOUGH.

Can't get past the mine field on that one.

I know I could as a kid but beats me how I did it.

At least on the FIRST mine field on the first course you don't also have to worry about the UFO's

This is really a fantastic port BTW.

They didn't really omit a thing.

What timing, just made it through. Didn't do it that way though. After I shoot the 2nd tank, I shoot again to block the first shot from the 3rd tank, then I jump. I jump over the last tank and the first crater, then jump again over the 2nd crater. I was trying it your way but was always landing in the 2nd crater.
