Human Rights Arts & Film Festival

Photo of one of the characters of the film, a middle-aged man floating on his back in water, a rubber duck wearing a baseball cap sits on his forehead
The Human Rights Arts & Film Festival organisers kindly offered Touching Base members a 25% discount for the screening of The Humanitarians on 10 May in Melbourne. This documentary presented a unique perspective of our search for love: following two disabled protagonists in their search for sexual and emotional fulfillment. Further info on the film here: http://2015.hraff.org.au/event/the-humanitarians/.

The Festival took place in Melbourne from 7-21 May, with a national tour to follow. Their diverse selection of film strives to inspire conversation and action about social justice.

Touching Base is "X-Rated" at the Canberra Museum

This image shows a red neon sign saying "X-Rated" above the byline "The Sex Industry in the ACT". The background is a grey brick wall.
The Canberra Museum and Gallery has launched their new exhibition "X-Rated", which will run until 20 September 2015. We are thrilled that the work of Touching Base is included in the displays and delighted that they have invited Rachel Wotton to provide a Q&A session after a screening of Scarlet Road on Saturday 30 May. The screening and Q&A will run from 2.30 to 4.00pm.

Getting about at Conferences

An elderly couple is pictured - with the man kissing the woman's cheek : to the left of them is the words "Let's talk about Sex conference 2015"
Touching Base's reputation for providing informative and stimulating presentations has led us to be invited to two new conferences.

Co-hosts Alzheimer’s Australia Vic and COTA Victoria have invited Touching Base to speak at their upcoming "Let’s Talk About Sex" Conference. Our President Saul Isbister will represent Touching Base on the opening panel session on Tuesday, 8 September 2015 between 9.40 and 10.30am. Saul's keynote presentation is on later the same day from 4.30 to 5.00pm at the Pullman on the Park, Melbourne.

The inaugural Let’s Talk About Sex Conference aims to challenge many of the assumptions, taboos and stereotypes when it comes to older people and sexual intimacy, and Touching Base will have a lot to offer attendees.
This image is a banner with the words "Elephant in the Room, Aged Care and Disability Conference.". The Logos of conference partners appear to the right of the text, as does a cropped image of an elephant
Rachel Wotton spoke at the "Elephant in the Room" conference at the Crown Plaza Terrigal on the opening day.

The conference aimed to have a frank discussion about breaking down barriers in the aged and disability are sector. One of the areas discussed was issues around sex, aging and sex and disability.

Our 45-minute workshop outlined the training workshops Touching Base delivers, our sex worker referral list and a number of educational resources we provide, that people can utilise in their workplaces.

It also looked at the multifaceted roles sex workers can play in some peoples lives, including within the aged care and disability sectors.

At Universities

Touching Base has been engaged with three student projects in the first half of this year. Two students from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) are conducting research for Touching Base into how local councils in the Sydney metro area are regulating the sex industry. Touching Base has a keen interest in discovering how local councils are performing, now that 20 years have passed since sex work was decriminalised in NSW.

A team of film students at Macquarie University are developing three new audiovisual training resources for Touching Base workshops. The students have interviewed two clients of sex workers with disability and produced two 10 minute videos about their experiences. The students also interviewed the manager of a supported accommodation unit. These new resources are going to contribute vital personal and professional perspectives to attendees at our workshops.

A group of five UTS students doing a communication module have kindly chosen Touching Base as their targeted project. Each of the students will be delivering a unique product for Touching Base, e.g. new information for our website, resources for stakeholders and a new three minute 'About Us' video.

In the media

Cosmopolitan magazine Australia approached Touching Base because they wanted to do a profile story about a sex worker who provides services to people with disability.

They interviewed Touching Base committee member Fleur de Lys about her work with clients with disability. Fleur was able to dispel a few myths by offering an insight into her experiences with the diverse sexuality of people with disability.

Report of the special roundtable seminar at the University of New South Wales

Touching Base is getting close to completing our report of the seminar we co-hosted at the University of New South Wales in November 2014. We have created five podcasts of the guest speakers who presented on a range of fascinating topics relating to disability, intimacy, pleasure and sexuality. The report will include links to the podcasts and a summary of the many points raised in general discussion. The videos are in the final stages of being subtitled.
A video still of Dr. Tom Shakespeare sitting behind a desk at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The subtitled text reads "to be touched, to be seen with eyes of desire, or felt with fingers of desire, is what we are aiming for".
