What's Happening at SimTiki!

We've had an eventful past few months and it's been a year since SimTiki was granted accreditation in Research and Education/Training by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSIH). Dr. Yoko Akamine, from Nagano, Japan, completed her one year International Research Fellowship and departed in July.  Four participants from Japan joined us for SimTiki Academy programs ranging from two week to two months: Akiko Hirata, MD (Nippon Medical School Hospital) Tomohiro Inoue, MD (St. Mary's Hospital), Yoko Ishibashi, RN (Fukuoka University Nursing School), and Nobuyasu Komazawa, MD (Osaka Medical College). Residents from Akita University & Nagasaki University participated in our JP Resident Physician courses. We continued with our Faculty development courses, FunSim and SimBites, with participants from UH, JABSOM and Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC). We were also thrilled to welcome our first participant from the Netherlands at our September FCCS course, along with other learners from TAMC and the OBGYN Hawaii Residency Program.

We wish you a happy & healthy holiday season!
Message from the Director

SimTiki has had a wonderful summer and fall. Fellows from Thailand and Japan represent a great diversity of experience and skills with focus areas in Emergency medicine, nursing education, radiation injury, disaster medicine, and neonatology. Our international journal club has been joined by participants in Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, and most recently Brunei...Welcome Amin! The first Pan Asia Simulation Society in Healthcare (PASSH) conference in Kuala Lumpur was a great success. I was honored to present an Invited Plenary Lecture on International Collaboration, and workshops on debriefing scenario design. JABSOM medical students have experienced airway management skills training as new integrated part of the first year problem based learning (PBL) curriculum, thanks to Dr. Takashi  Matsui. Dr. Yoko Akamine is a recently graduated fellow, who has published the first large survey results about Japanese simulation educators attitudes and experiences in Japan.

Aloha to Dr. Yoko Akamine

Farewell to Dr. Yoko Akamine, our Academic Research Fellow who left SimTiki in July. She accomplished much during her year in Hawaii, including certificates from the Office of Medical Education JABSOM, SimTiki Simulation Center Research Fellowship, and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (Society for Simulation in Healthcare). She facilitated multiple programs including Triage, Night on Call and Resident trainings, and also published a chapter in a pediatric textbook.  Aloha and Mahalo until we meet again!
