Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to support the delivery of its water and drainage lines of business capital improvement projects (CIP). This position will work under the general direction of a Supervising Civil Engineer in the CIP Design Section of SPU’s Project Delivery Branch. This position will primarily provide water design services, and also serve as a mentor to other staff in the water line of business.

Job Responsibilities

Supervise and/or prepare the most technically complex engineering designs for water system capital improvement projects:
  • Prepare alternative analyses, reports, preliminary and final design plans, cost estimates, technical specifications, and other related engineering products
  • Research and specify highly specialized water system aspects such as valves, pump stations and systems, seismically resistant pipeline system retrofits or new designs, etc.
  • Provide professional engineering stamp on final drawings
  • Design large and complex thrust restraint systems
  • Supervise the activities of a design team, as needed
  • Coordinate with other SPU divisions
  • Review consultant designs associated with large, inter-agency capital projects
  • Conduct site visits and perform internal confined space pipe inspections of large diameter steel pipelines.
Supervise and/or prepare engineering designs for drainage and wastewater system capital improvement projects:
  • Prepare alternative analyses, reports, preliminary and final design plans, cost estimates, technical specifications, and other related engineering products
  • Research and specify highly specialized drainage and wastewater system aspects such as flow control structures and tanks, stormwater treatment facilities, weirs, control valves, seismically resistant pipeline system retrofits or new designs, etc.
  • Provide professional engineering stamp on final drawings.
Supervise and/or develop consultant contracts for engineering design work related to water, drainage, and wastewater:
  • Develop tasks, estimate costs of consultant labor, work with consultant to refine the scope/schedule and budgets for work, and work with financial staff to finalize contracts
  • Monitor consultant’s work and review work products
  • Approve payments and perform other contract management tasks as appropriate.
Work environment/Physical Demands:
  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time
  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. 

Qualifications

Experience:  Five (5) years professional civil engineering experience.

Education:  Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering.

License/Certificate:
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington
  • Valid driver's license

Additional Information

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong background in water system design, including pipe systems, valves, storage facilities, restraint systems, etc.
  • Experience with corrosion, coatings or cathodic protection design and inspection 
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to develop effective working relationship with internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience using AutoCAD or Civil3D
  • Experience or knowledge of Green Stormwater Infrastructure design
