Dear Evanston Scholars Community,

We know that this is a particularly tumultuous time in our country. We all see the rage happening in our neighboring city of Chicago and our recent peaceful protest in Evanston. There has been so much troubling news and realities of late – the disturbing death of George Floyd, the actions of Amy Cooper, and the deaths of countless other unarmed African Americans. These instances are horrific and outrageous. And they illuminate the continued inequities and broken infrastructures in our society.

We, as an organization, believe that Black Lives Matter; and we will continue to teach anti-racism and elevate the voices of those who are often silenced.

Our world is broken, and it is even more imperative now that we continue to support our Scholars as they prepare to become leaders of the new generation, wielding their power to influence change while standing shoulder to shoulder with White allies and accomplices.

There is no wrong way to feel right now. For some it will be anger, others sadness, frustration, and even numbness. What we cannot lose among our range of feelings is the need to hold each other up, and for those with White skin privilege to hold each other accountable.

Evanston Scholars pledges to continue to do just that.

There are so many things out of our control; but here are some things all of us can take control of right now:

SELF-CARE:  Find some time each day to disconnect from social media and the news. Try to reduce your exposure to trauma-inducing images. Spend time talking with your family and friends. Write down your thoughts.

TALKING:  Find those you trust and have a forum to share your feelings.

REACHING OUT:  Difficult times do not have to be endured alone. We want to remove the stigma attached to discussion of mental health. The care of your emotions is just as important as your body. Feel free to seek mental health services and resources available during this time.

TAKING ACTION:   For White people, a great resource to begin or deepen your anti-racism work can be found here: Anti-Racism Resources for White People.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and protected in our communities. We hope you consider Evanston Scholars as a network of safety and support – a safe space to share your thoughts and concerns. We are available by email, text, or phone. In this fog of frustration, there is one thing you should be certain of – we care for you; we value you; and we want to hear from you.
