Mainers who received stimulus debit cards run into problems accessing money
Mainers who received stimulus money as a debit card instead of as a conventional check are running into problems accessing the money.
“The debit card, I took it to my small local bank in Bath. They said they didn’t work with that card, and it didn’t’ work with their ATM,” Josh Bate, of Phippsburg, said.
Experts said this is a familiar story for many Mainers.
Maine Credit Union League Communications & Public Affairs Manager Jen Burke said there is a way for people who receive a debit card to transfer money to their bank account.
Burke said in the fine print the website eipcard.com is listed where people can go to register their debit card. People can go to the “move money” section and transfer the money to their bank account after entering their routing and account information.
“If you want to use your funds to pay your mortgage, your car bills, you want to get them off that debit card and into your bank account,” Burke said.
Burke said people who are wary of entering their bank information on the website, they can withdraw the money from an ATM.
However, the cards were issued by MetaBank, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, which has no branches in Maine. That means Mainers will likely face ATM fees to withdraw the funds.
To avoid those fees, Burke said there are MetaBank ATMs located in Maine.
“On this eipcard.com, there is a MetaBank locator, and in Maine, there are MetaBank ATMs,” Burke said.
That requires the ATMs to be working, which Bate found out the hard way. Also, ATMs have withdrawal caps, which might mean multiple trips to the ATM to get the money.
Direct purchases can also be made with the debit cards.
“I made a purchase at Walmart with it, so, it is working for purchases, but I feel really sorry for people that need the cash to pay bills or pay people back or anything, because, a check would have been so easy to deposit,” Bate said.
